We use CMS's particle flow reconstruction algorithm to obtain jet constituents, which we then use to perform various jet substructure studies. After validating our basic kinematics and substructure results through a comparison to results from parton shower generators, we extract the 2-prong substructure of the leading jet using the soft drop algorithm. We find good agreement between the results from the Open Data and those obtained from parton shower generators. For the 2-prong substructure, we also compare to analytic calculations performed to modified leading-logarithmic accuracy. To our best knowledge, this is the first ever physics analysis based on the CMS Open Data.

Book excerpt: This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.

Book excerpt: Jets are collimated, high energy streams of particles that are ubiquitous at hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. It has been recognized that jets are a feature of the strong force, quantum chromodynamics (QCD). QCD predicts an approximate scaling behavior at high energies. Due to the very high energies made available by the LHC, the decay products of heavy, unstable particles can also be collimated into a narrow cone and these are observed as jets by the LHC experiments. Recently, there has been significant interest in studying the substructure of jets with the goal of discriminating QCD jets from jets initiated by heavy particle decay. In this thesis, I will describe the modeling of jets in QCD as well as the pattern of radiation from heavy particles, such as the top quark. This will lead to a discussion of a correlation function on the constituents of a jet that is useful in understanding jet substructure. This correlation function encodes angular scaling properties of jets and its behavior in QCD will be studied.

Book excerpt: Astrophysical observations of gravitational interactions provide strong evidence for the existence of dark matter. Many theories propose and experiments test the hypothesis that dark matter may have a particle physics origin, but this remains unproven. One such experiment is the Compact Muon Solenoid at the Large Hadron Collider. If dark matter couples, at least lightly, to the Standard Model, then it is possible to produce it in collisions at the LHC. Because it would not interact with the detector, we must look for collisions in which dark matter is produced in association with one or more SM particles. This thesis describes two such analyses: dark matter plus one top quark and dark matter plus two light quarks. Both cases result in complicated detector signatures due to the hadronization of final-state quarks. Recently developed jet substructure techniques were applied using novel methods to identify the hadronization products of high-momentum top quarks. In both analyses, the observed data is found to be consistent with SM backgrounds. We translate these results into the most stringent constraints to date on the relevant beyond-SM models.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the field of jet substructure, starting from the basic considerations for capturing decays of boosted particles in individual jets, to explaining state-of-the-art techniques. Jet substructure methods have become ubiquitous in data analyses at the LHC, with diverse applications stemming from the abundance of jets in proton-proton collisions, the presence of pileup and multiple interactions, and the need to reconstruct and identify decays of highly-Lorentz boosted particles. The last decade has seen a vast increase in our knowledge of all aspects of the field, with a proliferation of new jet substructure algorithms, calculations and measurements which are presented in this book. Recent developments and algorithms are described and put into the larger experimental context. Their usefulness and application are shown in many demonstrative examples and the phenomenological and experimental effects influencing their performance are discussed. A comprehensive overview is given of measurements and searches for new phenomena performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. This book shows the impressive versatility of jet substructure methods at the LHC.

Book excerpt: Jet substructure observables play a central role at the Large Hadron Collider for identifying the boosted hadronic decay products of electroweak scale resonances. The complete description of these observables requires understanding both the limit in which hard substructure is resolved, as well as the limit of a jet with a single hard core. In this paper we study in detail the perturbative structure of two prominent jet substructure observables, N-subjettiness and the energy correlation functions, as measured on background QCD jets. In particular, we focus on the distinction between the limits in which two-prong structure is resolved or unresolved. Depending on the choice of subjet axes, we demonstrate that at fixed order, N-subjettiness can manifest myriad behaviors in the unresolved region: smooth tails, end-point singularities, or singularities in the physical region. The energy correlation functions, by contrast, only have non-singular perturbative tails extending to the end point. We discuss the effect of hadronization on the various observables with Monte Carlo simulation and demonstrate that the modeling of these effects with non-perturbative shape functions is highly dependent on the N-subjettiness axes definitions. Lastly, our study illustrates those regions of phase space that must be controlled for high-precision jet substructure calculations, and emphasizes how such calculations can be facilitated by designing substructure observables with simple singular structures.

Book excerpt: Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider have offered an unprecedented window into some of the highest energy scales ever observed in experiments. Understanding these collisions, especially those that produce particles charged under quantum chromodynamics (QCD), requires a deep understanding of jets: the collimated sprays of particles produced by the parton shower and hadronization processes which emerge from the asymptotic freedom of QCD. Recent theoretical advances and the unprecedented capabilities of the ATLAS detector have enabled a new class of jet physics measurements based on the internal structure of jets, referred to as jet substructure. Three new types of measurements relying on jet substructure are presented. The first is a set of measurements sensitive which can discriminate between jets initiated by quarks and gluons. Separation is possible by studying variables sensitive to the magnitude of the color charge. Several such variables are measured, and a data-driven technique is used to construct a tagger, the first of its kind at a hadron collider, which can improve the sensitivity of searches for new physics in hadronic final states. A second measurement studies the color connections of jets in top-antitop events using an observable called the jet pull angle: sensitivity to the color representation of particles decaying to dijet pairs at a hadron collider is demonstrated for the first time. A final analysis searches for R-parity violating supersymmetry (SUSY) in all hadronic final states. These classes of models remove the characteristic missing energy signature which existing SUSY searches rely on, and require new discrimination techniques. Jet substructure provides a powerful handle to analyze these very high multiplicity states using a variable called the total jet mass. No signal is observed over the Standard Model (SM) prediction, and new limits are set on these previously unexplored models. The techniques of jet substructure lie at the hearts of all of these analyses, enabling both new measurements of SM phenomena and entirely new searches for physics beyond the SM.

Book excerpt: A search is presented for a new massive particle, generically referred to as a Z', decaying into a top anti-top quark pair, which then decay hadronically. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets. The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis uses data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in 2011. The dataset contains 4.92 fb−1 of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV. Upper limits in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for a Randall-Sundrum Kaluza-Klein gluon. In addition, any enhancement to t t-bar production for invariant masses above 1 TeV/c2 in the standard model is constrained.

Book excerpt: We currently live in the golden age of experimental particle physics. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) finally discovered the Higgs particle and may soon allow us to probe TeVscale new physics. Moreover, dark matter indirect detection experiments may have found annihilation products in our galaxy while the direct detection experiments keep improving their upper bounds on dark matter interactions with ordinary matter. That being said, the current efforts to discover any physics beyond the standard model have failed. We thus need to come up with better models and better tools to probe new physics. This thesis which collects the author's PhD research papers is an effort in this direction. We begin by showing how singular dark matter self-interaction can significantly enhance dark matter annihilation in today's Universe. Then we explore a concrete dark matter model where a particle called the dilaton mediate the interactions between the dark sector and the standard model. Finally we devise a new method to discern heavy boosted particles from QCD jets at the LHC.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, I develop an exclusive cone jet algorithm based on the principles of jet substructure and demonstrate its use for physics analyses at the Large Hadron Collider. Based on the event shape N-jettiness, this algorithm, called "XCone," partitions the event into a fixed number of conical jets of size RO in the rapidity-azimuth plane. This algorithm is designed to locate substructure independent of momentum, allowing accurate resolution of jets at both low and high energy scales. I present three potential analyses using XCone to search for heavy resonances, Higgs bosons, and top quarks at various momenta and show that it reconstructs these particles with efficiencies between 60% and 80% without any additional substructure techniques, and maintains this efficiency over a wide kinematic range. This algorithm provides many key advantages over traditional jet algorithms that make it appealing for use at the LHC and other high energy particle colliders.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first measurement of 6 hadronic event shapes in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7.0 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results are presented at the particle-level, permitting comparisons to multiple Monte Carlo event generator tools. Numerous tools and techniques that enable detailed analysis of the hadronic final state at high luminosity are described. The approaches presented utilize the dual strengths of the ATLAS calorimeter and tracking systems to provide high resolution and robust measurements of the hadronic jets that constitute both a background and a signal throughout ATLAS physics analyses. The study of the hadronic final state is then extended to jet substructure, where the energy flow and topology within individual jets is studied at the detector level and techniques for estimating systematic uncertainties for such measurements are commissioned in the first data. These first substructure measurements in ATLAS include the jet mass and sub-jet multiplicity as well as those concerned with multi-body hadronic decays and color flow within jets. Finally, the first boosted hadronic object observed at the LHC -- the decay of the top quark to a single jet -- is presented.
