Book excerpt: Heartsick unpacks the destruction of love by following the true stories of three lives altered by a major heartbreak. I wrote this book for the person who doesn’t want to be told that this too shall pass. Not yet. Who wants to sit with it. And see it for what it is. Who wants to know they’re not alone. That their pain is at once unique and universal. Belonging to them and everyone. When we’re thrown into the chaos of heartsickness, we focus so much on the end. The fact we are now unloved seems so much more important than the reality that we once were. This book was born in the hours I’ve waited for men to message me back and who never did... In the years full of almost-relationships, I thought, “I cannot handle another rejection,” and then found myself turned down by someone I wasn’t even sure I liked. I wrote this book because I know what it is to feel fundamentally unlovable. I knew when I was looking for Ana, Patrick, and Claire that their stories had to be true, because within them would be nuances I’d never noticed before and realities I couldn’t have invented. I didn’t want to be limited by what I happened to know about love and loss. I wanted to learn from people as I wrote, injecting wisdom from different places and genders and ages into this book. Weaving together these three true stories, Jessie Stephens captures the painful but wholeheartedly universal experience of heartbreak. Deeply relatable, addictive to the very last page, and powerfully human, Heartsick reminds us that emotional pain can make us as it breaks us and that storytelling has the ultimate healing power. In the solitude that reading a book demands, one is forced to reflect on one’s own life. After all, every time we explore others, we’re mostly just exploring ourselves. These are their stories—Ana’s and Patrick’s and Claire’s. But it is also my story and our story. I trust within it you will find echoes of yourself.

Book excerpt: Quite often, when we read the Bible, we see the big themes that we have heard over the years: do right, don’t do wrong, love your neighbor, and turn the other cheek. Jessie’s Corner takes some of the less well-known scriptures and shows how they too can impact your life. Sometimes the big themes find support in the small acts that we do every day. These essays show applications of those small pockets of wisdom in our daily lives. Some days, the best we can say is that we’ve managed to stay away from sharp objects or explosives. It’s possible to take those difficult days and lighten them by giving hope and showing that we do not go through them alone. Everyone feels discouraged and hopeless at times. It takes courage and faith to do something while being afraid. You can find courage and faith by connecting with God as a friend. This collection of meditations uses lesser-known scripture passages to explore ways to create a personal relationship with God and demonstrate that small acts can affect you in big ways.

Book excerpt: Jessie Whitmore, who lived in Swanley in Kent in south-east England, was beautiful, caring, and had a wicked sense of humour. The moment she walked into a room you knew she was there. She had time for everyone, young and old.At the age of sixteen, a week before her GCSE school exams, Jessie was diagnosed with leukaemia. She started taking oral medication, and her doctor arranged for her to have IVF so her eggs could be saved as there was a chance she could be affected by chemotherapy. Jessie bravely went through her treatment without seeking sympathy or undue attention. She did her very best to have as normal a life as she could, despite her illness. After a while it became obvious, unfortunately, that the oral medication wasn't working. Jessie was advised that she would at some point need to have a bone marrow transplant and intravenous chemotherapy. Jessie chose to have the transplant as soon as she could and she started helping her medical team find a matching donor. Finally a match was found. On the June day in 2005 when Jessie was admitted to King's College Hospital, London, her aunt Debbie gave her a notebook and suggested to Jessie that she keep a diary as Jessie was going to be in hospital for about six weeks. This book, 'Jessie's Diary', is what Jessie wrote. The bone marrow transplant went well but the side-effects of the chemotherapy that accompanied it were unfortunately too much for Jessie, and this led to her death.Jessie Whitmore was born on 30 June 1988 and died on 6 September 2005 at the age of seventeen. Her mother Lorraine says: 'It has been some time now since Jessie went but not a day goes by that I don't miss her and long just to hear her say, "e;hello Mum"e;.'

Book excerpt: Miss Jessie's is a memoir and business guide rich with inspirational life lessons and unique business advice from Miko Branch, the Chief Executive Officer of the dynamic Miss Jessie’s — the company that revolutionized the hair care industry. When Miko and her sister, Titi, were children, their grandmother, Miss Jessie, taught them independence and showed them the value of being “do it yourself” women, all while whipping up homemade hair concoctions at her kitchen table. As co-founders of Miss Jessie's, Miko reveals how she and Titi applied those lessons to create a successful business from scratch. A family memoir with a wealth of practical business advice and handy hair tips, told in Miko's funny and relatable voice, Miss Jessie’s is her remarkable story — from her childhood learning independence as a latchkey kid in Jamaica, Queens, to building a highly regarded company with her sister in their shared home salon in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Miko reflects on her hard-won insights working for her autocratic, iron-fisted father, and how the self-sufficiency she learned in childhood helped her blossom as a single mother with bills to pay, a child to raise, and a dream to pursue. She speaks honestly of her mistakes and successes, and of her role as an industry leader, negotiating multi-million dollar deals while at the same time restoring the self-esteem of natural and curly haired women. Charming and enlightening, chock full of entertaining stories and invaluable instruction that can be applied to any business, and illustrated with 16 pages of photos, Miss Jessie's confirms that with effort the American Dream is possible.

Book excerpt: In Thurber's world, sex is less a quest for pleasure or an expression of love than it is the retardation of emotion. And this is where Thurber makes her mark as an artist: She shows us how some parents would rather keep their offspring in their muck than Quirky and original, Lucy Thurber's STAY confirms the talent that the playwright demonstrated a few years back in the equally brilliant Where We're Born. Book excerpt: As the dust settled on Port-au-Prince, hope was the last thing anybody could see. When the earth shook, his whole neighborhood disappeared. Now a boy and his mother are living in the soccer stadium, in a shelter made of tin and bedsheets, with long lines for food and water. But even with so much sorrow all around, he finds a child playing with a soccer ball made of rags. Soon many children are caught up in the magic of the game that transports them out of their bleak surroundings and into a world where anything is possible. Then the kids are given a truly wonderful gift. A soccer ball might seem simple, but really it's a powerful link between a heartbroken country's past and its hopes for the future. Jesse Joshua Watson has created an inspiring testament to the strength of the Haitian people and the promise of children.
