They reveal that the New Testament texts put forth very different justifications for the right conduct or the good in New Testament texts and that a complex methodological approach is necessary in order to illustrate these arguments and their backgrounds. German description: Die weit verbreitete Beschreibung der Ethik in neutestamentlichen Schriften mit den Kategorien Indikativ und Imperativ halt einer kritischen Prufung am Text nicht stand. Die Beitrage dieses Sammelbandes versuchen deshalb Begrundungsmuster jenseits von Indikativ und Imperativ zu erfassen. Hierbei werden Verflechtungen mit ethischem Denken im Vor- und Umfeld des Neuen Testaments (z.B. hellenistisches Judentum; Stoa) wahrgenommen; ferner wird die Anwendbarkeit von Leitbegriffen im Diskurs zur antiken Ethik wie z.B. Lebenskunst oder Guterabwagung in Glucksethiken gepruft. Im Zentrum stehen die ethischen Begrundungsformen in einzelnen neutestamentlichen Schriften, sei es bei Paulus, in den Evangelien oder in der Briefliteratur (Jak, 1Petr). Ein Beitrag zur Begrundung der Ethik bei den fruhchristlichen Apologeten und ihren Gegnern rundet den Band ab.Das Ensemble der Beitrage macht deutlich, dass das rechte Tun bzw. das Gute in neutestamentlichen Texten auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise begrundet wird und ein komplexer methodischer Zugang erforderlich ist, um diese Argumentationen und Hintergrunde deskriptiv darzustellen.

The focus of the work is then on the two rituals that identified the Pauline communities: ritual washings and ritual meals. Turley explores Galatians and 1 Corinthians, two letters that present the richest spread of evidence pertinent to ritual theory. By exploring Paul's reference to ritual washings and meals with a heuristic use of ritual theory, Turley concludes that rituals in early Christianity were inherently revelatory, in that they revealed the dawning of the messianic age through the bodies of the ritual participants. This bodily revelation established both a distinctly Christian ethic and a distinctly Christian social space by which such an ethical identity might be identified and sustained.

This study proposes a new explanation of Paul’s reason language in Rom 12.1 based on a detailed investigation of ancient philosophical texts on the role of human beings in the cosmos, in which reason language and the idea of a vocation of human beings are closely connected. It argues that Paul here appeals to the idea of a human vocation in order to claim that Christ-followers are able to fulfil their human vocation by living in such a way that their lives produce signs of the new creation inaugurated in Christ. This case is made by establishing the central role of reason in ancient discourse on what it means to be human more broadly, and in particular in Epictetus, who provides the clearest parallel for Romans. These contextualisations allow for a fresh reading of Paul’s argument in Romans, where the relevance of these traditions is shown, not least for how Rom 12.1–2 frames Rom 12–15. The study thus contributes to the recent scholarly trend of exploring Paul in ancient philosophical contexts and advances the discussion on the integration of Paul’s “theology” and “ethics” within an ancient cultural encyclopedia.

In the first part of the book, the author discusses the established view that the Spirit is a material substance which transforms people ontologically by virtue of its physical nature. In order to assess this "Stoic" reading of Paul, the author examines all the passages from the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism, Hellenism and Paul that have been put forward in support of this concept of ethical enabling. He concludes that there is no textual evidence in early Judaism or Paul that the Spirit was conceived as a material substance. Furthermore, none of these or any of the Graeco-Roman writings show that ethical living derives from the transformation of the "substance" of the person that is imbued with a physical Spirit. The second part of the study offers a fresh approach to the ethical work of the Spirit which is based on a relational concept of Paul's theology. Rabens argues that it is primarily through initiating and sustaining an intimate relationship with God the Father, Jesus Christ, and with the community of faith that the Spirit transforms and empowers people for ethical living. The author establishes this thesis on the basis of an exegetical study of a variety of passages from the Pauline corpus. In addition, he demonstrates that Paul lived in a context in which this dynamic of ethical empowering was part of the religious framework of various Jewish groups.
