Book excerpt: This is the story of a pimp, Shame, the women he uses and abuses and how he recruited and maintained them on the street. First the street is revealed through Shame's mother, Latisa, as she works for different pimps, including a pimp/gambler who uses her to entice customers with live sex shows until they crossed organized crime. Shame has many run-ins with the law as a juvenile, but escapes detention while attending his mother's funeral. He falls in love, but is rejected when his lover finds out how old he is. As an adult, he encounters a couple of seasoned prostitutes. He convinces them to make him the kind of pimp they want. He quickly develops into a pimp like the rest of the vultures on the street. In the course of his initiation, a gangster pimp forcibly takes one of his women. Her wife-in-law attempts to rescue her. Shame moves on, recruiting young victims and learning from other pimps the ins and outs of the street. He meets a young woman and against the unwritten rules of the street falls in love. Fighting against his feelings he cons her into believing he's in trouble to get her into prostitution. When she finds out he is a pimp, she turns on him. She is kidnapped and drugged into submission. She tries to escape, but is found dead of a drug overdose. A policewoman who grew up with the drug victim conducts her own investigation. She goes undercover as a prostitute and another of Shame's women dies in a suspicious manner. She joins forces with a D.C. vice detective and they obtain enough evidence to get Shame arrested. The very dramatic trial does not turn out the way they expected and the victims of Shame decide to get their own justice.

Soon James and Sarah discover a mystery that may bind them in ways they never imagined. Will James make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Sarah and prevent a new hunt from bringing hysteria to Salem again? Book excerpt: ‘Pick up Hilary Bonner at your peril - you won’t be able to put her down’ - Val McDermidA twenty-five-year old murder, a missing girl, and a fatal attraction in a small seaside town...It is the first Sunday in August 1970. Another beautiful day in a summer that is burning itself to a horrifying close. A lone swimmer, Jennifer Stone, strikes out from the shore of Pelham Bay, deep into the blue. With her eyes closed against the sun’s sparkle, she floats blissfully into the rigid corpse of a young woman in a tattered red dress. The next day, a local girl disappears. She is never found, and both investigations are closed. Twenty-five years later, Jennifer, by now a Fleet Street journalist at the top of her game, returns to visit her mother’s home in Pelham Bay. Upon opening the local newspaper, she discovers that the failed investigations have been reopened. Back in London, a high-flying government minister reads the same story and his world is shaken. What happened that blazing August a quarter of a century ago will shape both his and Jennifer’s futures, as intense tragedy is resolved and a long-buried mystery comes to light. The Cruelty of the Morning is a tale of dangerous obsessions, small-town secrets and a destructive, mesmerising love affair. Hilary Bonner’s powerful debut novel caused a storm in the then relatively cosy world of crime fiction when it was first published in 1995. Indeed the sexual content was so strong that Hilary was asked to tone it down - the first time in their hundred-year-plus history that her publishers Heinemann had made such a request of a first-time author. ‘Hilary Bonner’s secret is that as a top journalist she's been there, seen it close up and asked the crucial questions. She plots with pace, passion and that marvellous ability to keep you turning the pages long after you meant to put out the light’ - Peter Lovesey, bestselling crime writer ‘A darkly erotic thriller. Book excerpt: People feel angry and let down by their leaders, as well as by the institutions that dominate their lives: political parties, government bureaucracy, and corporations. Yet the cause of this malaise, according to political -- advisor -- turned -- tech -- CEO Steve Hilton, is not being addressed by politicians on the left or the right. Hilton argues that much of our daily experience -- from the food we eat, to the governments we elect, to the economy on which our wealth depends, to the way we care for our health and well -- being -- has become too big, too bureaucratic, and too distant from the human scale. More Human sets out a radical manifesto for change, aimed at the root causes of our problems rather than just the symptoms. Whether it's using the latest advances in neuroscience to inform the fight against poverty and inequality, or applying lessons from America's most radical schools to transform our children's education, this book is an agenda for rethinking and redesigning the outdated systems and structures of our politics, government, economy, and society to make them more suited to the way we want to live our lives today. To make them more human.

To be aware of this wild, uncontrollable, unrighteous, greedy, evil sect, which has invaded America and which is selfi sh, and leading toward the living of unhealthy and germy conditions. Those who only care for themselves, not the welfare of others. The evildoers who are programming the younger generation in the society of the ‘90s. Those who are growing up into the twenty-fi rst century with the facial seizure syndrome inherited from their parents and peers, which was brought from other countries. This epidemic outbreak is also a prejudice and racist syndrome, spilled over into America from other countries, contaminating and birth-marking the younger ones as they grow up into the twenty-fi rst century. Therefore, the continuation of the outbreak syndrome and unhealthy conditions will become worse. Because Ms. Lila Nobles prophecy will take place. JoNell’s last statement was, “One must read the Bible daily to overcome these sects and their syndrome in America...”
