Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings. The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane .

Have you been aiming to learn French, but are reluctant to because it appears hard to read, pronounce, or master altogether? Don’t you wish there was a very easy process to start learning French for beginners like yourself? The French language is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world. It is “romantic” in a sense as it belongs to the Romance Language Family (languages that come from Latin origin), but more importantly, it is romantic because of its lilting smoothness of sound and terminology. This makes it a language many would love to learn. And certainly, if you’re visiting France, wouldn’t knowing a couple of phrases come in handy? French Made Easy by well-established author and teacher Pierre Dubois, can provide you with the framework to pick up some basic French. A pundit in linguistic education, Dubois majored in linguistics at New York University and has traveled the world studying diverse cultures and languages. This new guide will enlighten you on all the essential rules, and educate you on the need-to-know vocabulary and jargons when in France: · An Introduction to the Language (Benefits and French-English Linguistic Relationships) · Subjects for Familiarity (The French Alphabet, Numbers, Times, Dates and Necessary Get-by Words) · Basic French Grammar (Genders, Tenses, Accents, Articles, Verbs, Negation, and Sentence Structure) · Constructing Simple Questions · French Expressions and Formal and Informal Manners of Speaking · Conversation Starters and How to Say Farewell using a Number of Ways · Most Common-to-Use Words (Slang and Non-Slang) for School, Home, Business, Fun, Dining and Travel · Helpful Methods to Learn French Easily and Quickly

Book excerpt: Take an Australian family, relocate them to the French Rhone Alps for work with the UN, add a language barrier and a few huge cultural differences and you have a recipe for disaster! Like a French menu “Life on Planet France” comes with a side serving of French school teachers who roll their eyes at you and swear at their students. There is an eccentric landlord who wears a lab coat and safety goggles when mowing the lawn and French Firemen who in a state of drunkenness battle a giant wasp nest. The entree involves French language lessons that are enjoyed as much as Escargots on a child’s dinner plate. The main is a tantalising exchange of rather nasty instances with French Authorities who would rather forgo their steak tartare if eating it means helping a foreigner get a visa. And finally there is dessert; it’s a seductive and aromatic Frenchman who smells and tastes better then a crème brulee or chocolate soufflé. Life on Planet France is a true story of a family living in the French countryside. It is riddled with obstacles that seem infinite and from the beginning it appears that forces beyond their control are determined to destroy the family’s dream of permanently living abroad. Especially when one of them ends up in a Swiss hospital fighting for their life after a serious accident. This travel narrative is enriched with clever antidotes, insightful information and some really entertaining and touching moments.

Book excerpt: I Hate to Write is the compelling story of Edith Agnes McCormick an Irish immigrant, a devoted mother raising three sons in New York City in the early 1900s through WWI. Edith is an extraordinary woman of courage and fortitude. Through herRecord.a diary, which amazingly encompasses the period 1901 to 1919, Edith provides a compelling, extraordinarily personal glimpse into family life, but also the events occurring at the turn of the century through the cataclysmic changes of WWI. Ediths writing style is an educated one, her sense of humor with respect to family life in Manhattan with all of its challenges jumps off the pages and captures the heart and mind of the reader in a unique and captivating fashion. She opens our eyes to a time when flight was a breathtaking novelty. It was a time prior to air conditioning, when horses were dying in the sweltering heat of New York summers, when people sought summer relief in the seashore cottages of Staten Island. Ediths day to day thoughts are illuminating, as she opines upon such events as Theodore Roosevelt and the Panama Canal, the Russo-Sino War, Pearys discovery of the North Pole and the need for equal rights in the workplace and the vote for women. Ediths patriotic zeal and support for her country and its allies is compelling. Equally compelling is Ediths concern for her sons as America is drawn into the war in Europe.
