Book Synopsis Japan at the Millennium by : David W. Edgington
Download or read book Japan at the Millennium written by David W. Edgington and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan today is at an important historical juncture. Buffeted in recent years by rapid economic, social, and political change, yet still very much steeped in custom and history, the nation has become an amalgam of the traditional and the modern. As a result, the country has become increasingly difficult to categorize: How are we to represent today's Japan effectively, and fairly predict its future? This critical, multi-disciplinary collection explores the convergence of past and future in contemporary Japan. Contributors comment on a wide range of economic, socio-cultural, and political trends--such as the mobilization of Japanese labour, the burgeoning Ainu identity movement, and the shifting place of the modern woman--and conclude that despite the rapid changes, many of the traditional facets of Japanese society have remained intact, institutional change, they assert, is unlikely to occur quickly, and Japan must find alternate ways to adjust to twenty-first-century pressures of global competition and interdependence. A pleasure to read, this broad volume will be welcomed by upper-level undergraduates, graduates, and specialists in Japanese studies.

He presents a detailed picture of Japanese activity in East Asia in the areas of production, finance, security and 'knowledge', and maps out the historical context upon which this activity rests. In doing so, Kelly sheds light on the increasingly powerful but imperfectly understood phenomenon of regionalism. He goes on to identity the major fault line situated beneath both theoretical accounts of Japanese regionalism and 'real world' predictions of its success or failure.
Book Synopsis Corporate Governance and Sustainable Prosperity by : W. Lazonick
Download or read book Corporate Governance and Sustainable Prosperity written by W. Lazonick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-11-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we explain the persistent worsening of the income distribution in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s? What are the prospects for the re-emergence of sustainable prosperity in the US economy over the next generation? Situating these questions within a wider context through historical analysis and comparisons with Germany and Japan, this book focuses on the microeconomics of corporate investment behaviour, and the macroeconomics of household saving behaviour. Specifically, the contributors analyze how the combined pressures of excessive corporate growth, international competition, and intergenerational dependence have influenced corporate investment over the past two decades. They also offer a perspective on how corporate investment in skill bases can support sustainable prosperity, with studies drawn from the machine tool, aircraft engine, and medical equipment industries.

Book Synopsis Women's Employment in Japan by : Kaye Broadbent
Download or read book Women's Employment in Japan written by Kaye Broadbent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low status accorded to part-time workers in Japan has resulted in huge inequalities in the workplace. This book examines the problem in-depth using case-study investigations in Japanese workplaces, and reveals the extent of the inequality. It shows how many part-time workers, most of whom are women, are concentrated in low paid, low skilled, poorly unionised service sector jobs. Part-time workers in Japan work hours equivalent to, or greater than, full-time workers, but receive lower financial and welfare benefits than their full-time colleagues. Overall, the book demonstrates that the way part-time work is constructed in Japan reinforces and institutionalises the sexual division of labour.
