Book Synopsis Monster of the Twentieth Century by : Robert Thomas Tierney
Download or read book Monster of the Twentieth Century written by Robert Thomas Tierney and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extended monograph examines the work of the radical journalist Kotoku Shusui and Japan’s anti-imperialist movement of the early twentieth century. It includes the first English translation of Imperialism (Teikokushugi), Kotoku’s classic 1901 work. Kotoku Shusui was a Japanese socialist, anarchist, and critic of Japan’s imperial expansionism who was executed in 1911 for his alleged participation in a plot to kill the emperor. His Imperialism was one of the first systematic criticisms of imperialism published anywhere in the world. In this seminal text, Kotoku condemned global imperialism as the commandeering of politics by national elites and denounced patriotism and militarism as the principal causes of imperialism. In addition to translating Imperialism, Robert Tierney offers an in-depth study of Kotoku’s text and of the early anti-imperialist movement he led. Tierney places Kotoku’s book within the broader context of early twentieth-century debates on the nature and causes of imperialism. He also presents a detailed account of the different stages of the Japanese anti-imperialist movement. Monster of the Twentieth Century constitutes a major contribution to the intellectual history of modern Japan and to the comparative study of critiques of capitalism and colonialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brown Face and White: A Story of Japan A man's voice, deep and sonorous, called in the exquisite twilight of a Japanese summer evening. And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. Book Synopsis Japan in the American Century by : Kenneth B. Pyle
Download or read book Japan in the American Century written by Kenneth B. Pyle and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No nation was more deeply affected by America’s rise to world power than Japan. President Franklin Roosevelt’s uncompromising policy of unconditional surrender led to the catastrophic finale of the Asia-Pacific War and the most intrusive international reconstruction of another nation in modern history. Japan in the American Century examines how Japan, with its deeply conservative heritage, responded to the imposition of a new liberal order. The price Japan paid to end the occupation was a cold war alliance with the United States that ensured America’s dominance in the region. Still traumatized by its wartime experience, Japan developed a grand strategy of dependence on U.S. security guarantees so that the nation could concentrate on economic growth. Yet from the start, despite American expectations, Japan reworked the American reforms to fit its own circumstances and cultural preferences, fashioning distinctively Japanese variations on capitalism, democracy, and social institutions. Today, with the postwar world order in retreat, Japan is undergoing a sea change in its foreign policy, returning to an activist, independent role in global politics not seen since 1945. Distilling a lifetime of work on Japan and the United States, Kenneth Pyle offers a thoughtful history of the two nations’ relationship at a time when the character of that alliance is changing. Japan has begun to pull free from the constraints established after World War II, with repercussions for its relations with the United States and its role in Asian geopolitics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ghenko: The Mongol Invasion of Japan Ghenko, as the Japanese call the Mongol Invasion - a momentous national event which occurred in the last two decades of the thirteenth century - is, in my opinion, one of the most important facts which should be known by our friends who take an interest in the evolution of the Japanese power. For Japan is not a nation which became a world power simply because of the victories won in the chino-japanese and russo-japanese wars, but because of the superior spirit that has existed in the heart of, the nation from earliest tlmes.
