Book excerpt: The unforgettable true story of one man’s escape from the school-to-prison pipeline, how he reinvented himself as a pastor and education reform advocate, and what his journey can teach us about turning the collateral damage in the lives of our youth into hope. “A heart-wrenching and triumphant story that will change lives.”—Bishop T. D. Jakes Michael Phillips would never become anything. At least, that’s what he was told. It seemed like everyone was waiting for him to just fall through the cracks. After losing his father, suffering a life-altering car accident, and losing his college scholarship, Michael turned to selling drugs to make ends meet. But when his house was raided, he was arrested and thrown into a living nightmare. When it looked like he would be sentenced to spend years behind bars, the judge gave him a choice—go to a special college program for adjudicated youth or face the possibility of a thirty-year prison sentence. It wasn’t hard to pick. From that choice, a mission was born—to help change the system that shuffles so many young Black men like Michael straight from school to prison. Today, Michael is the pastor of a thriving church, a local leader in Baltimore, and a member of the Maryland State Board of Education. He discovered that education was the path to becoming who he was created to be. Armed with research, statistics, and his powerful story, Michael tackles the embedded privilege of the education system and introduces ideas for change that could level the playing field and reduce negative impacts on vulnerable youth. He explores ways in which the readers can help advocate and provide resources for students, and points us to the one thing anyone can start doing, no matter who we are or what our role is: speak into young kids’ lives. Tell them of their inherent worth and purpose. In this inspiring, thought-provoking, and energizing call to action, Michael’s practical steps provide a way forward to anyone wanting to help create space for collateral hope in the lives of for young people around them.

Book excerpt: When Jake, a powerful young bull owned by a cantankerous farmer named Bingo Reilly, escapes his pen and runs loose through a quaint Vermont town, the ensuing furor starkly reveals the state's parallel universes. Populating one are the yuppie city folk who moved to the state over the last few decades and now dominate it politically, and in the other are the people who have long lived there, some for many generations. The two universes get along well enough, mainly because they have little to do with one another: one prefers Mozart and golf, the other Emmylou Harris and Friday night Bingo. Nonetheless Jake's dash for freedom raised conciousness on all sides, including Jake's.

Book excerpt: “Other names besides [Herman] Melville’s will surely come to mind as you read this thrilling tale—there’s Dune’s Frank Herbert. . . . But in this, as in all of his works, Miéville has that special knack for evoking other writers even while making the story wholly his own.”—Los Angeles Times On board the moletrain Medes, Sham Yes ap Soorap watches in awe as he witnesses his first moldywarpe hunt: the giant mole bursting from the earth, the harpoonists targeting their prey, the battle resulting in one’s death & the other’s glory. Spectacular as it is, Sham can’t shake the sense that there is more to life than the endless rails of the railsea—even if his captain thinks only of hunting the ivory-colored mole that took her arm years ago. But when they come across a wrecked train, Sham finds something—a series of pictures hinting at something, somewhere, that should be impossible—that leads to considerably more than he’d bargained for. Soon he’s hunted on all sides, by pirates, trainsfolk, monsters & salvage-scrabblers. & it might not be just Sham’s life that’s about to change. It could be the whole of the railsea. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “[Miéville] gives all readers a lot to dig into here, be it emotional drama, Godzilla-esque monster carnage, or the high adventure that comes only with riding the rails.”—USA Today “Superb . . . massively imaginative.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Riveting . . . a great adventure.”—NPR “Wildly inventive . . . Every sentence is packed with wit.”—The Guardian (London)

Book excerpt: “Gemini is an unforgettable novel—a morality tale, a mystery, and a love story that will leave readers breathless” (Maria Semple, New York Times bestselling author of Where’d You Go, Bernadette). As should be the case with any memorable love story, the first time Raney Remington saw Bo she hated him. When the skinny kid from the city first arrives in her Pacific Northwest hometown, Raney doesn’t quite know what to make of him. Yet her intense dislike of the know-it-all bookworm softens as Bo latches on to Raney, eager to learn about the Washington island he’s been sent for the summer. Decades later Dr. Charlotte Reese finds herself fighting to keep an unconscious ICU patient stable while also unwrapping the mystery of the unconscious woman, the victim of a hit-and-run. Consumed by questions about the woman’s identity, Charlotte enlists Eric, her journalist boyfriend, to investigate. Their search for answers brings them to heartrending truths about Jane Doe―and themselves. In beautiful interwoven storytelling, master of medical drama Carol Cassella presents two women—lifetimes apart—who face the inescapable forces shaping their lives. Filled with stunning medical detail and set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, Gemini is a vivid novel of moral complexity and emotional depth that “is just what the doctor ordered” (People).

This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin (John-F.-Kennedy-Institut), 6 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In 1926 a man named Ernest Hemingway wrote a book. It was called "The Sun Also Rises" (as it also travels) and it recounts a recreational journey undertaken by the protagonist, Jake Barnes, and his companions. Jake is very fond of traveling. He is also very fond of getting drunk and seeing people and animals hurt each other. It is hard to tell which he favors more, since he travels in order to get drunk and see violence, although it would not be necessary, since violence and alcohol can be encountered at selected locations all across the world. Traveling must therefore have a more vital function in Jake's life. As multitudinous as Jake's motivations may have been, there seems to be one constant element that can be named as the driving force behind all of Jake's travels. This element is escape. Escape from a dismal and boring life in his home country and in Paris, escape from happiness in Spain and with (or without) Brett, or escape from his war experiences. Since it is such a fundamental part of his life, he, as the narrator, also portrays the other characters as fugitives from themselves and from others. In order to verify this statement, I will examine Jake's possible reasons for expatriation in general. Then I will try to further examine the individual travel stops that Jake visits during his journey. I will show that each location has a different meaning to him, although the guiding theme remains. Then again I will attempt to shine a light on the driving powers behind the restlessness of the three central characters: Jake, Brett and Robert. Although the narrator does show some insight into their motivations, there are still deeper ones that he might not realize because they are also inherent in himself.
