Book excerpt: The Jack Russell Terrier is a small to medium sized dog breed characterized by its excellent hunting abilities and adaptable personality. The breed originated in England in the 19th century, where it was bred by a man named Reverend John (Jack) Russell. Reverend Russell was a keen hunter and kept a variety of dogs to help him hunt. However, he was dissatisfied with the existing dog breeds and began to breed his own dogs. His aim was to create a dog that was fast, agile and intelligent and that could track and catch its prey. The dogs Reverend Russell used for his breeding were a mixture of different terrier breeds, including the Fox Terrier, the Black-and-Tan Terrier and the English White Terrier. These breeds were chosen because they were all excellent hunting dogs and had strong personalities. The dogs that Reverend Russell bred became known as Parson Russell Terriers, named after their breeder. They quickly became popular in the hunting community and were often used as companion dogs for hunters. They were known for their stamina and endurance, as well as their ability to adapt to different hunting conditions. Over time, however, Parson Russell Terriers began to evolve and differences in size, shape and personality emerged. Some dogs were larger and heavier than others, while others were faster and more agile. Some had more aggressive personalities than others, which led to conflict between the dogs and their owners. As a result of these differences, Parson Russell Terriers began to divide into two distinct groups.

Book excerpt: ‘Ridiculously enjoyable’ Tom Holland A Book of the Year for The Times, Mail on Sunday and BBC History Magazine The ‘Mermaid of Morwenstow’ excommunicated a cat for mousing on a Sunday. When he was late for a service, Bishop Lancelot Fleming commandeered a Navy helicopter. ‘Mad Jack’ swapped his surplice for leopard skin and insisted on being carried around in a coffin. And then there was the man who, like Noah’s evil twin, tried to eat one of each of God’s creatures… In spite of all this they saw the church as their true calling. These portraits reveal the Anglican church in all its colourful madness.

This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in 1878 while the Rev. Russell was still alive, the book was then republished in 1883 with an extra chapter dealing with Russell's death and funeral. Both editions are now extremely scarce and expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished the 1883 edition, using the original text and illustrations as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The Rev. John Russell of Tordown in Devon is probably best known for his establishment of one of the worlds favourite dog breeds: The Jack Russell Terrier. This book is devoted to Russell's life as one of the great foxhunting characters in English history, and his passionate involvement with horses, hounds and terriers in his beloved Devon countryside. Although not a typical dog book this title will prove of great interest to anyone owning a Jack Russell Terrier, with its lively anecdotes of the history and origins of this game little dog. The author was a good friend of the Rev. Russell and before this book of memoirs was published he consulted his subject on the veracity of every line of its contents. John Russell's life and his love of sport is detailed from his early days at Tiverton School where he kept his first pack of hounds. For the next 75 years his life revolved around the Church and his love of hunting the fox, stag and hare. Upon his death in 1883 Russell left a legacy to the world not only of a hunting legend, but also the Jack Russell breed of terrier now loved by so many. This is a fascinating four hundred page read for any Jack Russell Terrier enthusiast or historian of the breed, and will also stand as an important record of the early days of hunting in the South West. Many of the earliest dog books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. Keywords: Jack Russell Terrier Dog Breeds Devon Countryside John Russell Rev John Passionate Involvement Books Series Breed Books Life As One English History Hounds Anecdotes Memoir Terriers Still Alive
