Book excerpt: Moire interferometry with line densities of 1200 and 40 lines per mm was used to determine the two orthogonal displacements surrounding a stationary and a stably extending crack, respectively in two thin 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, single-edge notched specimens. The displacement fields were used to compute the J-integrals for various contours during crack tip blunting and subsequent crack extension. As expected, the near-and far-field J-integral value prior to stable crack growth coincided with the LEFM strain energy release rate, G, and validated the experimental procedure. The far field J values increased with increasing stable crack grow-Lh but the crack tip J values within the nonlinear region remained constant. The HRR displacement field, which was computed from the experimentally determined far field J, agreed with the measured displacement field prior to stable crack growth and progressively deviated from the measured values with stable crack extension ... Book excerpt: Moire interferometry was used to determine the two orthogonal displacement fields surrounding a stably growing crack in a thin 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, single-edge notched (SEN) specimen. The measured displacements were used to compute the J-integral and the associated HRR and the second order Q displacement fields. Also a 2-D elastic-plastic finite element model of the fracturing specimen was executed in its generation mode to compute the crack tip displacement field and the J-integral for small crack extension. The numerically computed and experimentally derived J-values agreed prior to crack extension but differed increasingly with stable crack growth. The HRR and measured v- displacements agreed well but significant difference between the HRR and measured u displacements was noted. Thus the Q component of the v-displacement was negligible but the corresponding u-component varied nonlinearly with radial distance from the crack tip. Book excerpt: The displacement fields surrounding stably growing cracks in 7075-T6, 2024-0, 2024-T3, 5052-H32 and 2091 aluminum alloy, standard and cruciform, single-edge notched (SEN) specimens were determined by Moire interferometry. An approximate and exact J-integral values were determined and found to be within 5% of each other and were both path independent. The associated HRR crack tip displacements in all specimens were in agreement with the measured displacements vertical to the crack but consistently differed in magnitude and order of singularity with the measured displacements parallel to the crack. One of the most popular ductile fracture criterion of the past two decades is the J-integral concept (1) for which enormous developmental efforts have been expended in recent years. The J-integral is heralded by many as a stable crack growth and ductile fracture criteria since in its linearly elastic limit, it reduces to the elastic strain energy release rate. (kr).

Book excerpt: J-integral values were determined directly from the measured orthogonal displacement fields surrounding a stably growing crack in 2024-0 and 5052-H32 aluminum alloy single-edge notched (SEN) and cruciform specimens of 0.8-mm thickness. These J values were then used to compute the crack-tip displacements associated with the Hutchinson-Rice-Rosengren (HRR) field. The displacement component as a result of the difference field in the simplified two-parameter J-Q or J-T ductile fracture theories was obtained by subtracting the HRR displacement from the measured crack-tip displacement. The slope of the log-log plots of the two orthogonal, difference-field displacement components varied irregularily with radial distance with no consistent second-order strain singularity. The results suggest that further analysis is necessary before the simplified J-Q theory can be used to analyze stable crack growth in thin plates.

But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.
