Book excerpt: Rudy Autio, one of the important figures in the contemporary clay movement beginning in the 1950s, discusses his early days growing up in a Finnish immigrant family in Butte, Montana, his time in the Navy at the end of WWII, the start of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana, with Peter Voulkos, and his building methods of early murals using brickyard clay. Later he helped K Ross Toole, the new director of Montana Historical Society Museum in Helena, with a number of dioramas there in 1954, especially the Lewis and Clark diorama. He then was hired at University of Montana in Missoula to build a ceramics program by President McFarland. He discusses noteworthy students he learned from during his 28-year teaching career and various commissions he built during those years, like the Grizzly, the ceramic murals for Polson, Walla Walla, and Helena. In the 1970s workshops in ceramics demonstrations became popular, especially after the first SuperMud conference, and Rudy describes some of these. Later chapters explore his first trips to Finland, meeting relatives and artists alike. He discusses ways his work changed throughout his life.

Lainey hasn’t been back to her hometown of Mountain Valley since her mother’s death, and never had any desire to return. But now she’s working on a film for Mason Scott’s new production company and finds herself renting a cabin on location in order to finish the script. The first person she sees on arrival is her high school boyfriend, Logan Matthews. She knew coming home meant she’d have to reckon with her past, she just didn’t realize she’d have to do it so quickly. Logan Matthews has never forgotten his one true love. When Lainey walks into his furniture shop one January night in the midst of a winter storm, Logan can’t believe his eyes. Years ago, he’d given up dreaming she’d ever come back to him, and here she was. His initial disappointment at learning she’d returned for work and not him is easily quelled by the fact he’s got a month to win her back. Can they find a second chance at love? When Lainey and Logan get together, it’s like the years between them have vanished…until they start to talk. Book excerpt: What Goes Around Comes Around follows the adventures of Brian McNulty, the red-diaper-baby bartender who (abetted by his father and son) attempts to keep Manhattan's crime solved and cocktail glasses brimming. Filling in for a friend at the fancy East Side saloon and eatery called The Ocean Club, McNulty finds more than he bargained for: a body floating in the East River. Combining complex characters with strikingly offbeat perspectives on left versus right, old versus new, and the good guys versus the bad guys, What Goes Around Comes Around is the stunning follow-up to Lehane's series debut.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "WomanPrayer, WomanSong is a groundbreaking contribution to the church of our day. While drawing on scripture and affirming God's self-revelation in Jesus Christ, this exciting book addresses the urgent need for ritual which incorporates women's experience. Feminine biblical images of God are recovered; feminine pronouns for God are supplied; valiant women are remembered; the church year is reinterpreted to highlight women's experience; and oppression and violence against women in scripture and society are exposed. I have been searching for alternatives to hierarchical, coercive, male images of God which are at the same time faithful to the Christian revelation. I have found a rich resource here!" --Ruth Duck, Pastor, Professor of Worship, Garrett -Evangelical Theological Seminary "With Miriam Therese Winter's WomanPrayer, WomanSong, the feminist movement in the Christian community goes beyond the critique of patriarchal bias in religion and begins a new phase. Through a new religious encounter with the Mother-spirit of God, a new religious culture begins to develop that also renews the liberating grace and power of biblical faith. For the first time the church prays and sings the ancient story of creation and redemption through women's creative imagination." --Rosemary Ruether, author of Women-Church "By drawing on tradition to challenge tradition, this book models how a feminist hermeneutic can revitalize tradition. The preface, liturgies, and songs reveal a sophisticated theological mind blessed with the gift of poetic expression." --Thomas Troeger, Professor of Preaching and Parish Ministry and Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, Iliff School of Theology

Keleigh, no longer able to deny her true calling, begrudgingly turns to her sworn enemy for help. Locke is a damaged druid whose family is entrusted with keeping witches cloaked in the Ordinary world in Salem. But Locke has a mission of his own, one that might not align with Keleigh’s. This fairy tale is about to become deadly because all’s fair in vanity’s war.

For many, their last meal may well have been their last meal. Families are giving up and leaving town. Everyone knows the fate that awaits the scattered farms. No one can save Ashland. It is as isolated as the back side of a blue moon. Into town comes Doc Bannister wearing a straw boater and a white suit. He is the miracle man. He has a homemade doodlebug machine that, he says, can find oil and make them all rich. Oil, he swears, lies beneath the blistered farmstead of Eudora Durant. She thinks Doc is a flim flam man. The sheriff believes he is a con artist. Both are convinced that Doc has come to town to swindle every dime he can get before hitting the road again. Ashland knows Doc may be crooked, but he has brought hope to a town that had no hope. Eudora has everything Doc wants. She is a beautiful woman who owns cheap land. In Ashland, she is known as the scarlet woman. Whispers say she murdered her husband. No one has seen him since the night they heard a shotgun blast on her farm. The town wants oil. Doc wants Eudora. But Eudora is too independent and stubborn to fall for the charms of a silver-tongued charlatan. She holds the fate of Ashland in her hands. Will she let Doc drill? Is there really oil lying deep beneath her sunbaked land? Can Doc find it? Or is he more interested in finding love than oil? What happens when a man with a checkered past comes face to face with a woman whose past is as mysterious as his?

Book excerpt: One day in the middle of a brutal Michigan winter, retired farmer Les Fields is found half-frozen in his barn. He is naked, smeared with animal blood, and raving that Christ appeared to him. He claims God wants a statue made for the church of Saint Cecelia's in the struggling farming community of Decker. Has Jesus really appeared to the troubled farmer? Or has Les simply slipped into madness? The parishioners of Saint Cecelia's must decide. How It Is With Miracles is a powerful story about the nature of faith, told from the perspectives of the three men at the center of the controversy, the troubled farmer, an aged priest and a young artist. As Les's neighbor one day points out to Father Greg, "You know how it is with miracles, Father. Sometimes they're in the eye of the beholder." You too must decide. But miraculous or not, events in Decker that winter and spring profoundly change the lives of the people involved.

Book excerpt: The core belief underlying this book is that the most useful and effective models to strengthen our intelligence are system ones, developed following the logic of Systems Thinking. Such models can explore complexity, dynamics, and change, and it is the author’s view that intelligence depends on the ability to construct models of this nature. The book is designed to allow the reader not only to acquire simple information on Systems Thinking but above all to gradually learn the logic and techniques that make this way of thinking an instrument for the improvement of intelligence. In order to aid the learning and practice of the Systems Thinking discipline, the author has abandoned a rigid formal language for a more discursive style. He writes in the first person, with an ample number of citations and critical analyses, and without ever giving in to the temptation to use formal mathematics.

I am alone and lost in a cold dark world with no place to turn except to the author and finisher of life its self. I am seeking relief and comfort while trying to open my heart to a new life of perfect love through Jesus Christ. These poems are the beginning of a once lost hope for a bright future. I am exploring myself and the means to change the tattered and torn wretch of a man that I had become. I can only hope that my life experiences, strengths, weakness, successes, and failures help others to reach out and take hold of their lost dreams and make them into a reality.

Th e first one, a gynecologist, keeps her waiting for 3 months before he does a D & C, and by way of a biopsy, finds out she has cervical cancer. At first he is going to do a radical hysterectomy, changes his mind, and dumps her on a radiologist with a non-existent Stage IC diagnosis report. The radiologist, not knowing his Merck Manual too well, convinces her that radiology is as effective as a hysterectomy operation for any Stage I cervical cancer. A year later, the cancer had metastasized. She receives chemotherapy and becomes very religious. The tumors disappear and she believes she is healed. However, three months later her health deteriorates, again. The husband and Dolores meet a lady cured of lung cancer by a strict metabolic diet and Laetrile pills. This happens while he is on a 3 month tour of duty assignment at Fort Hood, Texas as a civilian engineer for the US Army Tank-Automotive Command. On her advice and a talk with the doctor in Mexico they take a chance to cure Dolores with a trip to Clinica Cydel in Tijuana. After a few days of Laetrile treatment, but inability to hold down food, Dolores collapses and she is hospitalized at Dr. Contreras Hospital del Mar. She is put on a plane from San Diego to Detroit 3 weeks later, but rapidly breaks down in health. Her last day out, she attends a faithful Christian service conducted by evangelist Nora Lam. Dolores expires 4 months later.
