Book excerpt: In this research, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) optical temperature sensors are used for structural health monitoring of composite materials. The specific goal is to detect the thermal response of a composite to high energy radiation incident on the surface of a composite structure. FBG sensors also respond to axial strain in the optical fiber, thus any structural strain experienced by the composite is also detected. Consequently, this research has focused both on identifying the unique characteristics of each response and on developing feasible methods to isolate the thermal response from the strain response. Isolation ensures that any response to mechanical strain does not mask the response to a temperature gradient present on the composite surface. The isolation strategy developed in this research is characterized by two design features. First, a three-dimensional array of FBG temperature sensors has been embedded in a carbon/epoxy composite structure, consisting of both in-plane and through-thickness sensor arrays. This architectural design component exploits the spatial differences between the temperature profile and the strain profile in a composite structure. Second, an accompanying data processing scheme has been developed that uses the statistical properties of the collected sensor data to interpret and identify each response. The degree to which the isolation strategy increases the functionality of FBG temperature sensors in mechanically strained composite structures is assessed.

First, a strain-transfer model using the finite element (FE) method is developed to simulate the response of an embedded FBG to the applied loading. This FE model is also able to calculate birefringence in the FBG due to applied transverse loads. The model is validated considering the two-dimensional problem of diametrical compression of polarization-maintaining fibers. A modified T-matrix model is then formulated to simulate the response of an embedded FBG due to an applied axial strain field. The response of FBGs surface mounted on PMMA and two-dimensional woven composites subjected to multiple low velocity impacts is experimentally investigated. The complex spectral response is related to the residual strains after impact in the PMMA specimens and the surface strain to failure in the two-dimensional woven composites. The feasibility of using FBGs to measure internal strain in woven composites during damage progression is finally considered.

Book excerpt: Due to the difference in the physical and mechanical properties between the optical fiber, protective layer, adhesive layer, and the host material, the strains measured by a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor may not be the actual strains of the host material, which impedes the reliable applications of FBG sensors. To overcome this problem, in this paper, the strain transfer formula was derived by using elastic analysis, the shear-lag method, and several reasonable assumptions taking into account temperature variations and nonaxial stresses, which was an improvement to an existing study (Li, H. N., Zhou, G. D., Ren, L., and Li, D. S., "Strain Transfer Analysis of Embedded Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor Under Nonaxial Stress," Optic. Eng., Volume 46, No. 5, 2007, 054402). The analytical results were validated by simulating the behavior of a bare optical fiber through finite element analysis. The data enabled the identification of the parameters that influence the strain transfer from the host material to the embedded FBG sensors and the impact of the temperature variation and sensor alignment angle on the measurement accuracy. This work provided additional knowledge for the improvement of the existing strain transfer theory of FBG sensors in order to achieve a more accurate strain measurement with this sensing technology.

Test samples machined from the panel were mechanically tested in 4-point bending. Experimental results are presented that show the mechanical strain from foil strain gages comparing well to optical strain from the embedded sensors. Also, it was found that the distributed strain along the sample lenght was consistent with the loading configuration.

Measurements of strain and temperature, combined with a computational model, offer the potential for non-destructive, real-time determination of residual stress in composites, and may be useful for process monitoring and control. Extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer, Bragg grating strain sensors, and thermocouples were embedded in graphite/epoxy composite laminates prior to cure. The specimens were cured in a press, and the internal strains and temperatures developed during processing were monitored and recorded. The results are compared with expected values, and limitations of the experimental technique are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the application of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical sensors interrogation techniques over several time scales to monitor damage in composite structures due to low velocity impacts events. Optical fiber sensors are embedded into carbon fiber/epoxy resin woven composites using a single-step cure process. The composite specimens are subjected to multiple low energy impacts until failure. Impact events are characterized by acceleration and position sensors integral to the impactor head. The embedded FBG sensors are interrogated using three different interrogation techniques. Low speed, full spectrum measurements are recorded using a tunable laser source. High speed, peak wavelength detection data is taken using a commercial peak wavelength interrogation system. Finally, high speed full spectrum measurements are recorded using new instrumentation developed at Brigham Young University. By qualitatively examining the responses of these three techniques and comparing the FBG data with impact characterization data, a more complete picture of the composite health is available.

The concept of structural health monitoring is particularly important for fiber reinforced composites due to the complexity of the possible failure mechanisms. The goal of this thesis is to simulate the response of optical fiber Bragg grating sensors to multi-component loading for their implementation in structural health monitoring algorithms for composites. A simulation method is presented to determine the effects of axial, bending and shear loading on an embedded optical fiber Bragg grating sensor. The effect of fiber bending on the Bragg grating sensor is experimentally verified by embedding the sensor in a solid cone, clamped at the base and subjected to a point load at the apex. Next, a numerically efficient method to calculate the response of sensors embedded in a unidirectional composite is developed using both finite element analysis and optimal shear-lag theory and taking into account the above effects. The limitations of the optimal shear-lag theory are derived through comparison with the finite element results. The application of this method is demonstrated through a numerical example, simulating the response of sensors embedded in one fiber layer to a transverse crack. This work is a first step towards the development of embedded sensors for fiber-reinforced composites that are "self evaluating."
