Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1.5, Mar Augusthinose College, course: Biotechnology, language: English, abstract: Black pepper belongs to piperaceae family and is known as "king of species." This piperaceae family contain approximately 2,000 species. Phosphorus is one of the most important micronutrients and they are essential for the biological growth, development of plants and it is the most essential nutrient for plants. Phosphate deficiency is wide spread and phosphate fertilizers universally required in the form of inorganic P fertilizers, only a small portion is utilized by plants and the remaining are in insoluble form and they are solubilised by the microbes present in the soil. Soil, they are rich in micro and macronutrients and sixteen elements or nutrients are essential for plant growth and reproduction. Several soil bacteria, particularly belonging to the genera Pseudomonas and Bacillus posses ability to bring insoluble soil phosphate into soluble forms by secreting acids like formic, lactic and acetic. The rhizosphere soil sample were serially diluted up to 10-4 using sterile distilled water and plated on Pikovskaya's agar medium by pour plate method. The P solubilising isolates was evaluated on agar plates of Pikovaskya growth medium by solubilising the tricalcium phosphate of the medium. After incubation the phosphate solubilising microorganisms were selected based on different colonies. Out of so many bacterial isolates, 8 isolates were selected for the further study to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis. Phosphate solubilising microorganisms are possible to use as bio fertilizer for all crops. Among the isolates some of are almost identical in biochemical test but they have different morphology characters.

Phosphorus influences plant growth and productivity throughout the world. Also it is an essential component of DNA and RNA in biological systems. Since most of the compounds of phosphorus occurring in nature especially in soils are insoluble, microorganisms, in particular, rhizobacteria play a significant role in the solubilization of these compounds. Hence the present study on phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in the rhizosphere of foxtail millet is essentially concerned with the following aspects: Isolation and enumeration of populations of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria from the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil samples of foxtail millet. Purification and identification of the representative isolates. Estimation of the extent of solubilization by the different isolates of the phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. Seeds of 3 different varieties viz., Chitra, Lepakshi and Prasad were treated with individual inoculation of both bacteria and after 3 days of incubation seeds were sown. Shoot length was observed in respective concentrations i.e., 10-1 to 10-7 dilutions."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black pepper is one of the most important spice crops of India. It is produced mainly in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu of Southern India. Organic cultivation focuses basically on isolation. Pepper, when grown as an intercrop should still follow the conventions. Therefore, a 25 m wide isolation belt is to be made around the conventional production area of the plantation. The produce from this isolated belt is not to be considered as ‘organic’. In the case of sloppy terrain, care has to be taken to divert runoff water and drift from neighboring farms. Ginger is one of the important spice crops used for its aromatic and medicinal properties. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and believed to be a native of south-east Asia. Ginger is commercially sold in rhizome state. Turmeric, the ‘Indian saffron’ is one of the most important spice crops of India. Its culinary and medicinal merit finds its use in drug, cosmetic and food industry in India.

Book excerpt: Indian spices that provide flavor, color, and aroma to food also possess many therapeutic properties. Ancient Indian texts of Ayurveda, an Indian system of medicine, detailed the medicinal properties of these plants and their therapeutic usage. Recent scientific research has established the presence of many active compounds in these spices that are known to possess specific pharmacological properties. The therapeutic efficacy of these individual spices for specific pharmacological actions has also been established by experimental and clinical studies. The medicinal effects traditionally ascribed to Indian spices are validated by modern pharmacological and experimental techniques, thus providing a scientific rationale to their traditional therapeutic usage.

The book presents the biological importance of phosphorus and strategies adopted for isolation and screening of PSM (s), mechanisms of P solubilisation, mechanisms of plant growth promotion, and method for the development of microphos. Furthermore, some novel approaches including molecular tools used to identify the potential phosphate-solubilising microbes are presented. The recent advances in understanding the genetics and molecular biology of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and the genetic engineering of bacterial strains with enhanced phosphate-solubilising activity are discussed that is likely to lead to improve the efficiency of microphos inoculants and crop productivity. The problems, prospect and potentials of phosphate-solubilising microbes and their impact on agronomically important crops grown in conventional soils are discussed separately. Special attention is paid to highlight the functional variations within phosphate-solubilising microbes and to understand the impact of various factors on the phosphate-solubilising efficiency and colonization of such naturally occurring organisms. The synergism between phosphate-solubilizing microbes and other plant growth promoting rhizobacteria/arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and their interactive effect on crop productivity is highlighted separately. The book also presents a broad and updated view of the management of plant diseases using phosphate-solubilising microbes. The book further describes as to how the growth promoting rhizobacteria facilitate plant growth and how advanced information strategies can be used to manipulate and modify the soil environment.
