Book excerpt: After serving in Iraq and failing to reintegrate into American society afterward, Pete Richards expatriates to the Philippine Islands. As he struggles with unraveling his emotions from the war, he also struggles with integrating into Eastern culture, where what you see is not always what you get, and where warm and friendly smiles from strangers are generally indicative of completely opposite intentions. By the time Richards starts making sense of his new surroundings, he's broke, and he takes to mercenary work for income, helping the Philippine Army track down members of the various terrorist groups that plague the islands. During this time he meets Rose, a beautiful Filipina who comes to him for help, claiming that her younger sister has been kidnapped by the terrorist network Abu Sayyaf. Hesitantly, he agrees to help when she offers him a sum that he cannot refuse for his services. Richards soon finds himself on a mysterious island with Rose, the Isle of Kapre, where his views on what is real and what isn't take another turn as they encounter mythical creatures and beasts straight out of Philippine superstitions and urban legends in their attempt to find Rose's sister. Matters become worse when Richards finds out that Rose is not exactly what she's claimed to be and when he learns the truth about her sister, who has been taken by a force much darker and more powerful than a rag tag group of hooligans. "Isle of Kapre" is a dark fantasy tale about acceptance, and it is an introduction to the West of Philippine legend, folklore and paranormal, known collectively in the Philippines as Aswang.

People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.

Book excerpt: "Here there be dragons"--this notation was often made on ancient maps to indicate the edges of the known world and what lay beyond. Heroes who ventured there were only as great as the beasts they encountered. This encyclopedia contains more than 2,200 monsters of myth and folklore, who both made life difficult for humans and fought by their side. Entries describe the appearance, behavior, and cultural origin of mythic creatures well-known and obscure, collected from traditions around the world.

Book excerpt: The unsolved disappearance of his ten-year-old daughter, Samantha, drives MCI executive, Patrick Hanna, to drinking, divorce, and a desperate attempt to save his shattered life. His plan is simple: get out of the city and go back to Fork Mountain, stay in the old family cabin above Richwood, West Virginia, a retreat he knew with his recently-deceased father. Avoid human contact; try to heal his heart and mind. But Patrick soon finds he's not alone on the mountain. Mysterious visits from several little girls soon become regular. And no one in the area, including Ginny, his mother, can account for them or their families. It's as if they don't exist. Patrick rekindles an old flame with local librarian, Heather, his high school sweetheart, and soon finds out that Caleb, her blind son, can also see and communicate with the girls. The only other person who can is Phillip Ables, an old, Fork Mountain hermit and former convict who served twenty years for his alleged link to the disappearance of several children a generation before. As time goes by, Patrick learns that the girls are ghosts of missing children, most of whom disappeared on Fork Mountain. They're coming to him for help because, even in death, their abductor still torments them.Patrick struggles to solve their mystery in the midst of confronting his drinking and depression. To free the girls from abuse so they can pass on to eternity, he must learn the identity and motive of their killer. Was Phillip Ables guilty of the crimes for which he'd been convicted? Or was another party responsible; someone like the girls, who's already dead? As if his own personal demons weren't enough, he's now seeking peace for tormented ghosts.Based on historical fact, From the Graves of Babes is set in the real community of Richwood, West Virginia, and involves an actual secluded, unmarked gravesite where paranormal activity has long been witnessed and recorded. It is sure to be the most read, West Virginia ghost tale for generations to come.

Book excerpt: Homeless Across America is the story of a man who went from being a successful stock broker and family man to being a homeless vagabond, traveling around the country and living out of the back of his truck.Lake's journey took him to the homes of some of our greatest Presidents such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Harry Truman. He walked the fields of several decisive battles that occurred on our nation's soil such as the Battle of New Orleans and the fight at the Alamo. He traveled much of the very coarse that the Lewis and Clark expedition had traveled more than two hundred years ago while mapping out our nation.Lake's travels and the experiences they provided for him played a bigger part in his personal life as well. They helped him overcome many of the negative feelings he had about his own personal circumstances by causing him to realize that practically anyone who had ever lived as opposed to simply existed had gone through some sort of turmoil in their past but had made it through to see brighter days.

Book excerpt: With the publishing of 'October Nights, ' a great void has been filled. Sure, we all loved creepy Halloween stories like 'The Tale Of The Golden Arm' and the short story collections such as 'Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, ' when we were kids, but once we reached the age of majority, collections such as these, written on an adult level, simply did not exist. Until now!Acclaimed author Kevin E Lake has filled this void that's existed for far too long. With 'October Nights, ' Lake gives us, as adults, thirty one original spine tingling tales that will give us that feeling one only gets in October, when the leaves have changed, and jack o'lanterns begin popping up on porches and in yards all across America, and when the summer's heat has exited the room and the crisp, fall air has taken its place. That magical feeling that makes us believe that there may be something out there in the dark that we cannot see. Perhaps our old houses in which people have passed on to the other side, whether we are aware of it or not, really are haunted. All those things we hear going bump in the night might not simply be the roof cooling off from the day's heat, and popping, or the old wooden frames adjusting and settling with age. 'October Nights' provides us with one well written, terrifying tale for each night of the month of October. The only challenge the book presents is in the fact that its readers may not be able to help themselves to just one tale each night, rather, they may find themselves being far too tempted to blow through the entire work in one setting, because 'October Nights' is just that damn good! Just as Charles Dickens will always be remembered as the man who invented Christmas, due to his classic tale 'A Christmas Carol, ' Kevin E Lake, with the publishing of 'October Nights, ' will forever be remembered as the man who invented Hallo

Book excerpt: Timothy Gardener is a very simple, very private individual who prefers to keep to himself, but his next door neighbor is a complete lunatic! Apparently a mathematical genius, Gardener's neighbor seemingly never leaves his house, and he creates wealth, at least it seems to Gardener, out of thin air by day trading stocks from home. It appears to Gardener that his neighbor spends much of his wealth splurging on multiple call girls at a time who often bring their friends with them to his neighbor's parties, free of charge. Gardener finds himself becoming extremely attracted to a beautiful, young, Asian woman that his neighbor has had over so often, that it appears to Gardener, that she has become his neighbor's lover, and no longer merely a call girl. After becoming so infatuated with this woman, and no longer desiring to merely watch her from a distance, Gardener decides to walk across property lines and join her and one of her friends in what appears to be a Samhain celebration around a bonfire on Halloween Night. However, as Gardener draws close to the women, and he hears them celebrating the fact that his neighbor, the lunatic, will never see another sunrise, and he realizes they are burning his neighbor's personal effects in the fire, it occurs to him that he is witnessing something altogether different than a simple Halloween party. Spotted by one of the women while trying to sneak back to his own property, Gardener finds himself running for his life, and he discovers that a terrifying night of murder and mayhem has only just begun! "The Lunatic," by award winning writer Kevin E. Lake is a story which illustrates that things are not always as they appear. What you see is not always what you get, and that's why it's best to believe only part of what you see, and absolutely nothing that you hear. Also, more than any other work of literature written in any of the many human languages of Earth, "The Lunatic," illustrates the importance of each of us being who we are, no matter who that is, for when we are not, we run the great risk of becoming that which we hate, and hating that which we love, or, in the tragic case of "The Lunatic," even killing it!
