Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treasure of Cocos Island: A Story of the Indian Ocean Horsburgh the Borneo Coral Islands, a group in the Indian Ocean, about six hundred miles south of the coast of Sumatra, in 12° 5' S. Lat. And 90° 55' E. Long., well known as having furnished Mr. Darwin with the typical example of an atoll or lagoon island. There are altogether twenty-three small islands, nine and a half miles being the greatest width of the whole atoll. The lagoon is very shallow, and the passages between many of the islands of such trifling depth that it is possible to 'walk at low tide with some slight wading all the way from Direction Isl and to West Island.' An opening on the northern side of the reef permits the entrance of vessels into the northern part of the lagoon, which forms a good harbor known as Port Refuge, or Port Albion. The climate is temperate and extremely healthy. Terrific storms sometimes break over the islands, and it has been more than once visited by earth quakes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from And That Reminds Me: Being Incidents of a Life Spent at Sea, and in the Andaman Islands, Burma, Australia, and India Some ten days after the operation, when the tubes had been removed, and I was beginning to convalesce, my better half became troubled in her mind as to what she was going to do with me during the long period I had in front of me before I would be allowed up. She said, You won't jig-saw, ' you can't sew or knit, so the only thing I can suggest is, that as you've had such an awful past, ' you should take a pencil and paper in your hand, and, in the intervals of reading, jot down, if only for my information, some of your reminiscences. As far as I at present understand this awful past you have been everything but a cab-driver, but I should like to know something definite about it. And that is how what follows came to be written. As a matter of fact, I have been a cab-driver. Many years ago, alas how many! I well remember a certain hilarious night in London driving a hansom with nine on board five inside, two on the top as luggage, myself in the driver's seat and the driver standing on the step! We were of course eventually held up by the ubiquitous man in blue but that is another story, and we must to our muttons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indika: The Country and the People of India and Ceylon In the United States and germany-i had provided myself with helps for the study of the country and its romantic past. But in Bombay my apparatus was greatly enlarged, and it grew continually during my stay in India. I soon saw that if one de sires to understand all that is involved in the Christianization of a land, he must make a special study of the country, its people, antiquities, dead faiths, industries, literature, habits, and political history. It was always a special privilege to meet representa tires of the new thought and life of the empire. Every day brought with it something fresh, instructive, and attractive. When the hour came to leave the country, it seemed as if awak ing out of a delightful dream. Not until, one February morn ing, when I was actually on the deck of the Siam, and sailing out of the Bombay harbor, with the vessel pointing towards Aden, was the charm broken. There had been a certain subtle and un disturbed joy which came from the environment. Nor could I know the depth and power of the Indian fascination until the ghats back of Bombay faded into the perfect sky and the eye could no longer see the beautiful islands in that matchless bay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands in California Having been requested to write a short account of th 6 Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands I accepted the invitation with pleasure, though with some misgivings. The fact is that next to nothing is known about these now extinct Indians, and the few notices extant are so scattered in rare books and periodicals of an evanescent nature, that it would take months and even years to gather them together. In other words our historical knowledge of the Indians is too small to be very interesting though just on that account the more valuable. There has never appeared in print any connective narrative of these Indians, and the following notes have been culled from what literature I could find without going outside of San Francisco, together with notes made during my visits to these islands in 1873 and 1897. At the earliest of these visits the Indians had already been totally extinct for twenty years. While the skulls and skeletons presented to the Society were collected only on the Island of Santa Rosa, I have thought it best to include in this account all the other islands of the channel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Legends of Vancouver Island In the making of the stories into Eng lish, I have worked in what knowledge I have of the customs and habits of the West Coast Indians of Vancouver Island. In a few instances, due to a lack of refinement of thought in the original stories, I have taken some license in their transcription. The legends indicate the poetry that lies hid den in the folk lore of the British Columbia Coast Indian tribes. For place names and other valuable information I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. Cox. The illustrations are original and are the work of Mr. J. Semeyn of Victoria. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Question The long established belief, that the Indian population of the United States is rapidly disappearing, and that the time is not far distant when it will become so insignificant in size, that it will cease to give annoyance to the Govern ment, has scarcely received contradiction until within the past ten years. Among a large portion of our citizens an opinion still widely prevails, that the Indian tribes which formerly roamed over the country east of the Mississippi River, have almost ceased to exist. We'are occasionally informed of the sad fate of the nations of the former North West Territory, or possibly, of the advance in civilization which those small remnants of the Iroquois, and Cherokee nations which still remain with us have reached. The State of Delaware is about to place in his final resting place its only red native, while the summer visitors at Nantucket are shown the grave of the last representative of the original proprietors of the soil of that island.
