Book excerpt: White duck, boldly colored fabrics in solids, stripes, and jaunty prints, rattan and cane seating, whitewashed or colorfully painted English case furniture, canopied beds, straw matting--these are but some of the signature ingredients of an Amanda Lindroth interior. The Florida-born designer decamped to Nassau some 20 years ago after stints in New York and London. Since she founded her firm in 2010, she has become the go-to designer of island dwellers from Lyford Cay to Antigua, Abaco to Belize, Harbour Island to Palm Beach, and Southampton to Great Cranberry Island in Maine. Her airy, relaxed, indoor-outdoor aesthetic--a hybrid that merges colonial and island influences--is apparent in every one of the 30 projects featured in Island Hopping. With photographs by the masterly Tria Giovan, herself an island native, and charming illustrations by the gifted Aldous Bertram, the book is the visual equivalent of an island getaway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off your bowlines, sail away from your safe harbor and catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover. Mark TwainI wanted to see the heart and soul of the Caribbean in a fabulous six-month island-hopping adventure. I explored over forty islands from the Bahamas to the Grenadines and, in this book, provide the reader with some history, humor, good stories, and a little philosophizing about the trip. I try to transport my readers into another world they may or may not ever occupy themselves; take them on a road trip they may only dream about. I tried to keep my book positive, adventuresome, humorous, and fun to read.I have been an explorer and a wanderer all of my life. I have always wanted to live every day to its fullest. The harsh reality of life is that we do not make it out alive. I made many new friends on this trip thru the Caribbean who I still keep in touch with to this day. It is so easy to socialize when your days revolve around beaches and sunsets.Travels, even if along the same path, are all different and they all have their own personalities. What you have to accept in order to enjoy traveling to the max is that you do not take a trip--a trip takes you. I have always been very good at understanding and accepting this. It's also important to consider the lifespan of your journey. This seems to be variable and unpredictable. Who has not known a journey to be over and dead before the traveler returns? The reverse is also true; many a trip continues long after the journey has ended. My six-month Caribbean trip has always stayed with me--you will know why by the final page of this book.I backpacked on the trip for flexibility, I even beach camped a few times. My transportation between islands was mostly by ferry and my transportation on the islands was mostly scooter or good old-fashioned shoe leather. I stayed predominately at B&Bs when I could although some island locations mandated different lodging requirements like Mustique and the Canouan Islands. This was one of the best trips of the many I have taken in my life. I was a different and a much better person at the conclusion of the trip, and I learned a lot about myself, the Caribbean and the Caribbean people.I hope you enjoy reading about my island-hopping adventure as much as I enjoyed living it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “wide-ranging, vivid” narrative history of one of the most coveted and complex regions of the world: the Caribbean (The Observer). Ever since Christopher Columbus stepped off the Santa Maria and announced that he had arrived in the Orient, the Caribbean has been a stage for projected fantasies and competition between world powers. In Empire’s Crossroads, British American historian Carrie Gibson offers a panoramic view of the region from the northern rim of South America up to Cuba and its rich, important history. After that fateful landing in 1492, the British, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, and even the Swedes, Scots, and Germans sought their fortunes in the islands for the next two centuries. These fraught years gave way to a booming age of sugar, horrendous slavery, and extravagant wealth, as well as the Haitian Revolution and the long struggles for independence that ushered in the modern era. Gibson tells not only of imperial expansion—European and American—but also of life as it is lived in the islands, from before Columbus through the tumultuous twentieth century. Told “in fluid, colorful prose peppered with telling anecdotes,” Empire’s Crossroads provides an essential account of five centuries of history (Foreign Affairs). “Judicious, readable and extremely well-informed . . . Too many people know the Caribbean only as a tourist destination; [Gibson] takes us, instead, into its fascinating, complex and often tragic past. No vacation there will ever feel quite the same again.” —Adam Hochschild, author of To End All Wars and King Leopold’s Ghost

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Write guidebooks, make travel TV, lead bus tours? Cameron Hewitt has been Rick Steves’ right hand for more than 20 years, doing just that. The Temporary European is a collection of vivid, entertaining travel tales from across Europe. Cameron zips you into his backpack for engaging and inspiring experiences: sampling spleen sandwiches at a Palermo street market; hiking alone with the cows high in the Swiss Alps; simmering in Budapest’s thermal baths; trekking across an English moor to a stone circle; hand-rolling pasta at a Tuscan agriturismo; shivering through Highland games in a soggy Scottish village; and much more. Along the way, Cameron introduces us to his favorite Europeans. In Mostar, Alma demonstrates how Bosnian coffee isn’t just a drink, but a social ritual. In France, Mathilde explains that the true mastery of a fromager isn’t making cheese, but aging it. In Spain, Fran proudly eats acorns, but never corn on the cob. While personal, the stories also tap into the universal joy of travel. Cameron’s travel motto (inspired by a globetrotting auntie) is "Jams Are Fun"—the fondest memories arrive when your best-laid plans go sideways. And he encourages travelers to stow their phones and guidebooks, slow down, and savor those magic moments that arrive between stops on a busy itinerary. The stories are packed with inspiration and insights for your next trip, including how to find the best gelato in Italy, how to select the best produce at a Provençal market, how to navigate Spain’s confusing tapas scene, and how to survive the experience of driving in Sicily (hint: just go numb). And you’ll get a reality check for every traveler’s "dream job": researching and writing guidebooks; guiding busloads of Americans on tours around Europe; scouting and producing a travel TV show; and working with Rick Steves and his merry band of travelers. It’s a candid account of how the sausage gets made in the travel business—told with warts-and-all honesty and a sense of humor. For Rick Steves fans, or anyone who loves Europe, The Temporary European is inspiring, insightful, and fun.

Book excerpt: A masterwork of travel literature and of history: voyaging from Cuba to Jamaica, Puerto Rico to Trinidad, Haiti to Barbados, and islands in between, Joshua Jelly-Schapiro offers a kaleidoscopic portrait of each society, its culture and politics, connecting this region’s common heritage to its fierce grip on the world’s imagination. From the moment Columbus gazed out from the Santa María's deck in 1492 at what he mistook for an island off Asia, the Caribbean has been subjected to the misunderstandings and fantasies of outsiders. Running roughshod over the place, they have viewed these islands and their inhabitants as exotic allure to be consumed or conquered. The Caribbean stood at the center of the transatlantic slave trade for more than three hundred years, with societies shaped by mass migrations and forced labor. But its people, scattered across a vast archipelago and separated by the languages of their colonizers, have nonetheless together helped make the modern world—its politics, religion, economics, music, and culture. Jelly-Schapiro gives a sweeping account of how these islands’ inhabitants have searched and fought for better lives. With wit and erudition, he chronicles this “place where globalization began,” and introduces us to its forty million people who continue to decisively shape our world.
