Book Synopsis Triangular Algebras and Ideals of Nest Algebras by : John Lindsay Orr
Download or read book Triangular Algebras and Ideals of Nest Algebras written by John Lindsay Orr and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995-09-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triangular algebras and nest algebras are two important classes of non-selfadjoint operator algebras. In this book, the author uses the new depth of understanding which the similarity theory for nests has opened up to study ideals of nest algebras. In particular, a unique largest diagonal-disjoint ideal is identified for each nest algebra. Using a construction proposed by Kadison and Singer, this ideal can be used to construct new maximal triangular algebras. These new algebras are the first concrete descriptions of maximal triangular algebras that are not nest algebras.

Book excerpt: Immersive environments such as virtual reality technology makes possible can respond to their audiences, so that each person's experience of the environment is unique. This volume brings together 11 essays along with artists' projects produced at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada to explore issues raised by the creation of virtual environments. The essays approach the social and cultural implications of cyberspace from the perspective of cultural studies, communications, art history, art criticism, English, and women's studies; while artists who created nine virtual worlds at the Banff Centre discuss what they have tried to accomplish in both theoretical and technical terms. With 64 illustrations, including 18 color plates. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis Selfadjoint and Nonselfadjoint Operator Algebras and Operator Theory by : Robert S. Doran
Download or read book Selfadjoint and Nonselfadjoint Operator Algebras and Operator Theory written by Robert S. Doran and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the NSF/CBMS Regional Conference on Coordinates in Operator Algebras, held at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in May 1990. During the conference, in addition to a series of ten lectures by Paul S Muhly (which will be published in a CBMS Regional Conference Series volume), there were twenty-eight lectures delivered by conference participants on a broad range of topics of current interest in operator algebras and operator theory. This volume contains slightly expanded versions of most of those lectures. Participants were encouraged to bring open problems to the conference, and, as a result, there are over one hundred problems and questions scattered throughout this volume. Readers will appreciate this book for the overview it provides of current topics and methods of operator algebras and operator theory.
Book Synopsis Invariant Subspaces by : Heydar Radjavi
Download or read book Invariant Subspaces written by Heydar Radjavi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a large amount of work on invariant subspaces, motivated by interest in the structure of non-self-adjoint of the results have been obtained in operators on Hilbert space. Some the context of certain general studies: the theory of the characteristic operator function, initiated by Livsic; the study of triangular models by Brodskii and co-workers; and the unitary dilation theory of Sz. Nagy and Foia!? Other theorems have proofs and interest independent of any particular structure theory. Since the leading workers in each of the structure theories have written excellent expositions of their work, (cf. Sz.-Nagy-Foia!? [1], Brodskii [1], and Gohberg-Krein [1], [2]), in this book we have concentrated on results independent of these theories. We hope that we have given a reasonably complete survey of such results and suggest that readers consult the above references for additional information. The table of contents indicates the material covered. We have restricted ourselves to operators on separable Hilbert space, in spite of the fact that most of the theorems are valid in all Hilbert spaces and many hold in Banach spaces as well. We felt that this restriction was sensible since it eases the exposition and since the separable-Hilbert space case of each of the theorems is generally the most interesting and potentially the most useful case.

Book Synopsis New Directions in Hopf Algebras by : Susan Montgomery
Download or read book New Directions in Hopf Algebras written by Susan Montgomery and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopf algebras have important connections to quantum theory, Lie algebras, knot and braid theory, operator algebras and other areas of physics and mathematics. They have been intensely studied in the past; in particular, the solution of a number of conjectures of Kaplansky from the 1970s has led to progress on the classification of semisimple Hopf algebras and on the structure of pointed Hopf algebras. Among the topics covered are results toward the classification of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras (semisimple and non-semisimple), as well as what is known about the extension theory of Hopf algebras. Some papers consider Hopf versions of classical topics, such as the Brauer group, while others are closer to work in quantum groups. The book also explores the connections and applications of Hopf algebras to other fields.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Algebra by : M. Hazewinkel
Download or read book Handbook of Algebra written by M. Hazewinkel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-05-30 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebra, as we know it today, consists of many different ideas, concepts and results. A reasonable estimate of the number of these different items would be somewhere between 50,000 and 200,000. Many of these have been named and many more could (and perhaps should) have a name or a convenient designation. Even the nonspecialist is likely to encounter most of these, either somewhere in the literature, disguised as a definition or a theorem or to hear about them and feel the need for more information. If this happens, one should be able to find enough information in this Handbook to judge if it is worthwhile to pursue the quest. In addition to the primary information given in the Handbook, there are references to relevant articles, books or lecture notes to help the reader. An excellent index has been included which is extensive and not limited to definitions, theorems etc. The Handbook of Algebra will publish articles as they are received and thus the reader will find in this third volume articles from twelve different sections. The advantages of this scheme are two-fold: accepted articles will be published quickly and the outline of the Handbook can be allowed to evolve as the various volumes are published. A particularly important function of the Handbook is to provide professional mathematicians working in an area other than their own with sufficient information on the topic in question if and when it is needed. - Thorough and practical source for information - Provides in-depth coverage of new topics in algebra - Includes references to relevant articles, books and lecture notes
Book Synopsis The Equationally-Defined Commutator by : Janusz Czelakowski
Download or read book The Equationally-Defined Commutator written by Janusz Czelakowski and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph introduces and explores the notions of a commutator equation and the equationally-defined commutator from the perspective of abstract algebraic logic. An account of the commutator operation associated with equational deductive systems is presented, with an emphasis placed on logical aspects of the commutator for equational systems determined by quasivarieties of algebras. The author discusses the general properties of the equationally-defined commutator, various centralization relations for relative congruences, the additivity and correspondence properties of the equationally-defined commutator and its behavior in finitely generated quasivarieties. Presenting new and original research not yet considered in the mathematical literature, The Equationally-Defined Commutator will be of interest to professional algebraists and logicians, as well as graduate students and other researchers interested in problems of modern algebraic logic.
Book Synopsis Separability within commutative and solvable associative algebras. Under consideration of non-unitary algebras. With 401 exercises by : Sven Bodo Wirsing
Download or read book Separability within commutative and solvable associative algebras. Under consideration of non-unitary algebras. With 401 exercises written by Sven Bodo Wirsing and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the context of the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem a radical complement exists and all complements are conjugated. The main topics of this work are to analyze the Determination of a (all) radical complements, the representation of an element as the sum of a nilpotent and fully separable element and the compatibility of the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem with derived structures. Answers are presented in details for commutative and solvable associative algebras. Within the analysis the set of fully-separable elements and the generalized Jordan decomposition are of special interest. We provide examples based on generalized quaternion algebras, group algebras and algebras of traingular matrices over a field. The results (and also the theorem of Wedderburn-Malcev and Taft) are transferred to non-unitary algebras by using the star-composition and the adjunction of an unit. Within the App endix we present proofs for the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem for unitary algebras, for Taft's theorem on G-invariant radical complements for unitary algebras and for a theorem of Bauer concerning solvable unit groups of associative algebras.
