Book excerpt: Let be a simple classical algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic with natural module . Let be a closed subgroup of and let be a nontrivial -restricted irreducible tensor indecomposable rational -module such that the restriction of to is irreducible. In this paper the authors classify the triples of this form, where and is a disconnected almost simple positive-dimensional closed subgroup of acting irreducibly on . Moreover, by combining this result with earlier work, they complete the classification of the irreducible triples where is a simple algebraic group over , and is a maximal closed subgroup of positive dimension.

Book excerpt: Let [italic]Y be a simply-connected, simple algebraic group of exceptional type, defined over an algebraically closed field [italic]k of prime characteristic [italic]p > 0. The main result describes all semisimple, closed connected subgroups of [italic]Y which act irreducibly on some rational [italic]k[italic]Y module [italic]V. This extends work of Dynkin who obtained a similar classification for algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0. The main result has been combined with work of G. Seitz to obtain a classification of the maximal closed connected subgroups of the classical algebraic groups defined over [italic]k.

Book excerpt: An accessible text introducing algebraic geometries and algebraic groups at advanced undergraduate and early graduate level, this book develops the language of algebraic geometry from scratch and uses it to set up the theory of affine algebraic groups from first principles. Building on the background material from algebraic geometry and algebraic groups, the text provides an introduction to more advanced and specialised material. An example is the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. The text covers the conjugacy of Borel subgroups and maximal tori, the theory of algebraic groups with a BN-pair, a thorough treatment of Frobenius maps on affine varieties and algebraic groups, zeta functions and Lefschetz numbers for varieties over finite fields. Experts in the field will enjoy some of the new approaches to classical results. The text uses algebraic groups as the main examples, including worked out examples, instructive exercises, as well as bibliographical and historical remarks.

It pulls together into a single source the basic facts about classical groups defined over fields, together with the required geometrical background information, from first principles. The chief prerequisites are basic linear algebra and abstract algebra, including fundamentals of group theory and some Galois Theory. The author teaches at the U. of Arizona. c. Book News Inc

Book excerpt: With the classification of the finite simple groups complete, much work has gone into the study of maximal subgroups of almost simple groups. In this volume the authors investigate the maximal subgroups of the finite classical groups and present research into these groups as well as proving many new results. In particular, the authors develop a unified treatment of the theory of the 'geometric subgroups' of the classical groups, introduced by Aschbacher, and they answer the questions of maximality and conjugacy and obtain the precise shapes of these groups. Both authors are experts in the field and the book will be of considerable value not only to group theorists, but also to combinatorialists and geometers interested in these techniques and results. Graduate students will find it a very readable introduction to the topic and it will bring them to the very forefront of research in group theory.

Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years, the theory of groups — in particular simple groups, finite and algebraic — has influenced a number of diverse areas of mathematics. Such areas include topics where groups have been traditionally applied, such as algebraic combinatorics, finite geometries, Galois theory and permutation groups, as well as several more recent developments. Among the latter are probabilistic and computational group theory, the theory of algebraic groups over number fields, and model theory, in each of which there has been a major recent impetus provided by simple group theory. In addition, there is still great interest in local analysis in finite groups, with substantial new input from methods of geometry and amalgams, and particular emphasis on the revision project for the classification of finite simple groups. This important book contains 20 survey articles covering many of the above developments. It should prove invaluable for those working in the theory of groups and its applications. Book excerpt: Two closely related topics, higher order Bohr sets and higher order almost automorphy, are investigated in this paper. Both of them are related to nilsystems. In the first part, the problem which can be viewed as the higher order version of an old question concerning Bohr sets is studied: for any d∈N does the collection of {n∈Z:S∩(S−n)∩…∩(S−dn)≠∅} with S syndetic coincide with that of Nild Bohr0 -sets? In the second part, the notion of d -step almost automorphic systems with d∈N∪{∞} is introduced and investigated, which is the generalization of the classical almost automorphic ones.

Book excerpt: This paper is a contribution to the study of the subgroup structure of excep-tional algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. Following Serre, a closed subgroup of a semisimple algebraic group G is called irreducible if it lies in no proper parabolic subgroup of G. In this paper we com-plete the classification of irreducible connected subgroups of exceptional algebraic groups, providing an explicit set of representatives for the conjugacy classes of such subgroups. Many consequences of this classification are also given. These include results concerning the representations of such subgroups on various G-modules: for example, the conjugacy classes of irreducible connected subgroups are determined by their composition factors on the adjoint module of G, with one exception. A result of Liebeck and Testerman shows that each irreducible connected sub-group X of G has only finitely many overgroups and hence the overgroups of X form a lattice. We provide tables that give representatives of each conjugacy class of connected overgroups within this lattice structure. We use this to prove results concerning the subgroup structure of G: for example, when the characteristic is 2, there exists a maximal connected subgroup of G containing a conjugate of every irreducible subgroup A1 of G.

It seems therefore futile to search for methods involving generators and relations which can be used to detect the structure of a group. Nevertheless, results in the indicated direction exist. The clue is to ask the right question. Classical geometry is a typical example in which the factorization of a motion into reflections or, more generally, of a collineation into central collineations, supplies valuable information on the geometric and algebraic structure. This mode of investigation has gained momentum since the end of last century. The tradition of geometric-algebraic interplay brought forward two branches of research which are documented in Parts I and II of these Proceedings. Part II deals with the theory of reflection geometry which culminated in Bachmann's work where the geometric information is encoded in properties of the group of motions expressed by relations in the generating involutions. This approach is the backbone of the classification of motion groups for the classical unitary and orthogonal planes. The axioms in this char acterization are natural and plausible. They provoke the study of consequences of subsets of axioms which also yield natural geometries whose exploration is rewarding. Bachmann's central axiom is the three reflection theorem, showing that the number of reflections needed to express a motion is of great importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic groups are treated in this volume from a group theoretical point of view and the obtained results are compared with the analogous issues in the theory of Lie groups. The main body of the text is devoted to a classification of algebraic groups and Lie groups having only few subgroups or few factor groups of different type. In particular, the diversity of the nature of algebraic groups over fields of positive characteristic and over fields of characteristic zero is emphasized. This is revealed by the plethora of three-dimensional unipotent algebraic groups over a perfect field of positive characteristic, as well as, by many concrete examples which cover an area systematically. In the final section, algebraic groups and Lie groups having many closed normal subgroups are determined.
