This book was released on 2001 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding Your Family in County Down This illustrated, well indexed book, was created exclusively to help you find your family in County Down, Ireland. Focusing specifically on families within the county, it includes an introduction to research and sources in Down. The most numerous families from birth records are given, as well as rather rare Down families found in heraldic records. Included you will find a full page county map from the Atlas of Ireland, along with a listing of modern parishes and old townlands, along with the address and location of records for more research. Published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation, this book was originally made for members researching in Down. What this book does This work includes copies of actual records (some worn, torn and faded), from the IGF Library. It also includes rough sketches of family coats of arms and notes from centuries past - seldom found elsewhere. The resources provided here will help research any family in the county, including old Irish families, and settler families from England, Scotland, Wales and the continent. This book is a hands on guide for finding your family in Down - some family history is included - but it is not a gigantic collection of family histories . (For that see 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small', the first book in the Irish Families series by O'Laughlin.) The Irish Families Project for Down The Master book to the 29 volume Irish Families series is 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small'. That book gives hundreds of family histories from County Down and the surrounding areas. "County Down Genealogy and Family History Notes", volume 14 in the series, expands upon that coverage with added families and new resources just for Down. (In this way both books can work together as a set if desired, or they may be used independently for research.) Among the most numerous families here in the 19th century were: Thompson (Thomson) Smith (Smyth, Smythe), Campbell (Cambell, Camble), Martin (Martyn) Patterson (Paterson, Pattersen) Wilson (Willson) Graham, Johnston (Johnson), Murray (Murry), Brown (Browne), Robinson (Robenson, Robinsen), Hamilton, Bell, Scott (Scot) and Boyd. The most noted old Irish families in Down were those of McQuillan, Mac Gilmore, O'Neill, Mac Cartan, O'Neill and Magennis. Other noted family that hailed from Down were Hill, Bradshaw, Savage, Fraser, Jackson, Taylor, Walker, Watson. Remember also that part of Belfast is contained in County Down as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest frustrations for generations of genealogical researchers has been that reliable guidance on sources for perhaps the most critical period in the establishment of their family's links with Ulster, the period up to 1800, has proved to be so elusive. Not any more. This book can claim to be the first comprehensive guide for family historians searching for ancestors in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Ulster. Whether their ancestors are of English, Scottish, or Gaelic Irish origin, it will be of enormous value to anyone wishing to conduct research in Ulster prior to 1800. A comprehensive range of sources from the period 1600-1800 are identified and explained in very clear terms. Information on the whereabouts of these records and how they may be accessed is also provided. Equally important, there is guidance on how effectively they might be used. The appendices to the book include a full listing of pre-1800 church records for Ulster; a detailed description of nearly 250 collections of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century estate papers; and a summary breakdown of the sources available from this period for each parish in Ulster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Tracing Your Northern Irish Ancestors is an expert introduction for the family historian to the wealth of material available to researchers in archives throughout Northern Ireland. Many records, like the early twentieth-century census returns and school registers, will be familiar to researchers, but others are often overlooked by all but the most experienced of genealogists. An easy-to-use, informative guide to the comprehensive collections available at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland is a key feature of Ian Maxwells handbook. He also takes the reader through the records held in many libraries, museums and heritage centres across the province, and he provides detailed coverage of records that are available online. Unlike the rest of the British Isles, which has very extensive civil and census records, Irish ancestral research is hampered by the destruction of many of the major collections. Yet Ian Maxwell shows how family historians can make good use of church records, school registers and land and valuation records to trace their roots to the beginning of the nineteenth century and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether building a family tree or simply researching the history of their ancestors, people of Irish heritage will find the means to track down elusive family records and relatives in this detailed and practical handbook. Throughout history, genealogy has been highly valued by the Celtic people. The heads of Irish families often could enumerate their ancestors far back to times of legend, to Conn of the Hundred Battles, or to Queen Medb herself. Ancestor-hunting is particularly important to the descendants of those who left Ireland during the great emigration of the 19th and 20th centuries. Here those descendants will learn how to undertake a genealogical search and develop it as far as possible using parish registers, census returns, gravestone inscriptions, newspapers, and birth, death, and marriage certificates. From finding family information online to tracking down public records, the methods revealed in this resource help sort through all the genealogical information available.

Book excerpt: When Irish author and filmamaker, Gabriel Murray, found the lost family tomb of Bishop John Kearney, President Obama’s great-uncle, in an ancient Cathedral in Ireland in March 2009, he set off an international media frenzy. The discovery was likened to the plot of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code in the international press and the hundreds of sites, which appeared on Google covering the find. Anne Dunham, Obama’s mother, was the grand daughter of Mary Ann Kearney who was a direct descendant of the Bishop in the Kilkenny tomb. This widened the search for Obama’s Irish roots, which originated in Shinrone, Moneygall in Ofally and Cashel in Tipparary. They went even further back to the ancient Kingdom of Thomond where Obama’s roots had had links to the High Kings of Ireland, martyrs and biblical scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the nine counties of Ulster, none can claim a more cosmopolitan and fascinating history than Down. In ancient times it formed part of the ancient kingdom of the Ulaid; the Dal Fiatach, the most important of the groupings of tribes of Ulaid, came to dominate the east of the county with their capital at Downpatrick. Vikings came to raid and then settled along the coast. Later the Normans seized control of the Dal Fiatach kingdom constructing castles, monasteries and abbeys before becoming 'hibernicised'. In the seventeenth century, thousands of Scottish and English settlers poured into Down, establishing themselves in the north and east of the county. Meanwhile the native Irish were able to preserve their way of life in south Down where their close-knit communities were sufficiently well organised under their traditional leaders to co-exist with the newcomers. The distribution of surnames in the couty provides lasting evidence of its complex history. The purpose of this book is to provide a practical guide for the family historian searching for ancestors in County Down. It is true that many records have been lost, including those in the destruction of the Public Record Office in Dublin in 1922. However, much has survived to aid the dedicated family or local historian. Moreover, it has become increasingly accessible in the detailed catalogues and user-friendly searching aids in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. Because of the breadth of the material covered, this book will appeal both to the experienced researcher and to the novice. Of particular value are the detailed listings of the records of landed estates, churches and schools, as well as the appendices listing townlands and unofficial place-names for the county.
