Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Distress and Its Remedies: The Land Question; A Visit to Donegal and Connaught in the Spring of 1880 During the Irish Famine of 1846-7 the Society of Friends took a very active and prominent part in the administration of funds for its relief, and money or food to the value of 200,000 was dispensed by its Central Relief Committee in Dublin. When during the past winter the first intimation of the distress in the West of Ireland was received, a small Committee was formed in London to consider whether it was right and needful again to take up the work. The result of these inquiries led this Committee to the conclusion that it would be unwise to attempt any extended organisation for this purpose, seeing that already two very influential Committees had been formed in Dublin for the relief of the distress. The need for further information on account of the conflicting statements as to the extent of this distress, was, however, very strongly felt by the Committee.
