Book excerpt: The Pribilof Islands were surveyed by the International Pacific Halibut Commission five times in the 1960s, and once in 1984. Pacific halibut were collected for age, length, and gender, and a portion of the catch was tagged to try and determine utilization of halibut through interchange with other areas of the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. In all, 4,233 fish were tagged and 3,102 fish were collected for age, length, and gender. Tag returns ranged from 3 to 10 percent with the majority of out-of-area returns occurring in the Central Gulf (lPHC Regulatory Area 3A). Beginning in 1978, the commercial fishery began to steadily build with 71,485 pounds landed that year. A separate regulatory area (Area 4C) was formed in 1986 with a seasonal fishing limit of one day open/one day closed. In 1987, trip limits were implemented at the request of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council and remained in effect through 1994.

Book excerpt: This book reviews the performance and effectiveness of the Community Development Quotas (CDQ) programs that were formed as a result of the Sustainable Fisheries Act of 1996. The CDQ program is a method of allocating access to fisheries to eligible communities with the intent of promoting local social and economic conditions through participation in fishing-related activities. The book looks at those Alaskan fisheries that have experience with CDQs, such as halibut, pollock, sablefish, and crab, and comments on the extent to which the programs have met their objectives--helping communities develop ongoing commercial fishing and processing activities, creating employment opportunities, and providing capital for investment in fishing, processing, and support projects such as infrastructure. It also considers how CDQ-type programs might apply in the Western Pacific.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Book Synopsis The Bering Sea Ecosystem by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Bering Sea Ecosystem written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-05-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bering Sea, which lies between the United States and Russia, is one of the most productive ecosystems in the world and has prolific fishing grounds. Yet there have been significant unexplained population fluctuations in marine mammals and birds in the region. The book examines the Bering Sea ecosystem's dynamics and the relationship between man and the ecosystem, in order to identify potential reasons for the population fluctuations as well as identify ways the Sea's living resources can be better managed by government.
