Many succeeding commercial games were developed since the end 1980's and contributed to the growth and interest in computer games in general and strategy games in particular. Games such as Command & Conquer(TM) series (by Westwood and EA Studios), Civilization(TM) series (by Sid Meier), Warcraft(TM) and StarCraft(TM) series (by Blizzard) entered to the computer games' hall of fame, thanks to their inventiveness, artificial intelligence challenge and visual effects that they offer. Almost every strategy computer game was based on the idea of an "electronic board game", a modern brother to the classic, "physical" board games such as chess, checkers, backgammon, hexxagon and more. An interesting issue is the fact that both the classic board games and the modern strategy computer games are sharing many of the key elements that make the players think and act strategically and tactically, according to the development of the game. This issue is the basis for the project, and discussed further in the next pages. It is common to divide strategy games into two main types: "Abstract strategy", where there is "perfect information" regard to the game's state. An example for an "Abstract strategy" is Chess. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,7, Pforzheim University, language: English, abstract: This paper is about negotiations and the game theory. Negotiation has been since ever omnipresent. It can confront us in our daily life, for example the question who is doing the dishes today or in much more complex is-sues, such as in economics or politics. "Simply defined, negotiation is the process of attempting to get what one wants, through agreement with one or more other par-ties." There are different tools with which negotiations can be modeled. One of them is game theory. "GAME THEORY aims to help us understand situations in which decision-makers interact. A game in the everyday sense - a competitive activity in which players contend with each other according to a set of rules." According to the definition, game theory is an appropriate tool to apply for negotiations and get the best outcome of it. It can make it easier for us to analyze our own needs, the least acceptable agreement, and desires, the most desired outcome, but also the ones of our opponent. Consequently, game theory allows us to estimate the strategy the other party is going to use. Moreover, game theory reaches back far in history. There had been recognized some game theoretic situations even in the bible. But the major development started in the 1920s. First, game theory was a mathematic discipline. The two mathematicians, John von Neumann and Emile Borel worked on game theory and subsequently the book Theory of games and economic behavior was published by von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern in 1944. Later, in the 1950s, game theory was not only considered to be a mathematician discipline, but it has been also applied in "economic theory and political science, and psychologists began studying how human subjects behave in experimental games."

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 2, University of applied sciences, Neuss, course: Marketing, language: English, abstract: Most leading companies today pursue multiple strategies for growth simultaneously in order to reach their strategic goals. It is important to verify how different growth strategies are appropriate for companies operating in different types of markets, and how changes in business environment make the same company decide on different strategic options at stage time in its organisational life cycle. The reason why firms succeed or fail is perhaps the central question in strategy. The firm needs a well-defined scope and growth direction, that objectives alone do not meet this need, and additional decision rules are required if the firm is to have orderly and profitable growth. Such decision rules and guidelines have been broadly defined as strategy or, sometimes, as the concept of the firm's business. The choice of a marketing growth strategy is a function of the strategic situation, organisational characteristics, and entrepreneur motivations. It is inherent to the process of strategy formulation. Companies must be flexible to respond rapidly to competition and market changes. They must benchmark continuously to achieve best practice.

Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Psychology - General, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: The current study investigated effects of continuous social inclusion in a virtual ball tossing game on the P300 event-related potential based on a single trial analysis. Participants played an ostensible online game called Cyberball, which served as a social modification of the classical Oddball Paradigm. During the inclusion session, ball passes to the participant became more frequent over time from almost none to 33% at the very end of the game. Each participant had to ran an inclusion and an exclusion session. According to the order of experimental conditions, two inclusion-groups encompassing 15 datasets were taken for analysis. Of special interest was the centro-parietal P3b subcomponent that emerges 220ms-500ms after stimulus onset. The signal detection technique included template matching and cross-correlation. The data were analyzed twice: Once with the raw data, once preprocessed with the application of the Independent Component Analysis. Performances of the different approaches were compared and evaluated. Effects of target probability changes on the P300 amplitude were investigated. Further a linear fit and a model of local target probability were applied to account for P300 amplitude variations. Latencies were mainly examined to validate the methods of single trial estimations.

Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 3.42, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Supply Chain and Information System), course: Logistics and Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: Procurement is increasingly playing a vital role in assisting major organizations to achieve cost savings through strategic material sourcing. Strategic sourcing is a firm's procurement process that continuously improves and re-evaluates the purchasing activities of a company. There is a dilemma of trade-off between sourcing overseas and locally to increase construction or organizational performance. This study investigates the impact of strategic material sourcing on construction performance, a comparative study of domestic verses overseas sourcing strategies. In pursuance of this, the key objective was to determine the effects of sourcing strategies on the performance of construction/ real estate industry of Ghana. Stratified sampling technique was used in addition with structured questionnaires to obtain data. The study adopted descriptive research design to generate findings. Analysis of data was done using the SPSS and findings were presented in descriptive and Microsoft Excel tables with frequency and percentages. Regression analysis was also used to analyze the relationship between strategic material sourcing and construction performance. The findings show that, 55% of materials used in the real estate industry were sourced from the overseas market and it implies the industry depends highly on foreign materials which impacts construction performance. Several reasons why the industry source from the local or foreign market but ten reasons were identified as significant to domestic sourcing while eleven were recorded for overseas sourcing, implying that, there is a minute advantage in sourcing overseas to local market. Recommendations made based on the findings were: the industry shou

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decolonizing Colonial Heritage explores how different agents practice the decolonization of European colonial heritage at European and extra-European locations. Assessing the impact of these practices, the book also explores what a new vision of Europe in the postcolonial present could look like. Including contributions from academics, artists and heritage practitioners, the volume explores decolonial heritage practices in politics, contemporary history, diplomacy, museum practice, the visual arts and self-generated memorial expressions in public spaces. The comparative focus of the chapters includes examples of internal colonization in Europe and extends to former European colonies, among them Shanghai, Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Examining practices in a range of different contexts, the book pays particular attention to sub-national actors whose work is opening up new futures through their engagement with decolonial heritage practices in the present. The volume also considers the challenges posed by applying decolonial thinking to existing understandings of colonial heritage. Decolonizing Colonial Heritage examines the role of colonial heritage in European memory politics and heritage diplomacy. It will be of interest to academics and students working in the fields of heritage and memory studies, colonial and imperial history, European studies, sociology, cultural studies, development studies, museum studies, and contemporary art. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1.3, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to examine the intrinsically motivating aspects of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in the EFL classroom. It will be started with communicative language teaching (CLT) as a precursor to TBLT. The theoretical context will be discussed with particular reference to Stephen Krashens' Affective Filter Hypothesis as it has influenced research on motivation in foreign language learning as well as TBLT. After that, the current paradigms of CLT will be presented, focusing on its changes compared to former language teaching methods. Moreover, the terminology of motivation will be addressed by first providing a clear definition and then going on to discuss motivation in foreign language teaching. Although there are countless theories in this particular field, the most important theory for the course of this thesis is the Self-Determination Theory by Ryan and Deci as it first introduced the concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Besides, the teacher and learner roles will be discussed to see how they affect each other's motivation. Furthermore, Dörnyei's motivational strategies for the foreign language classroom will be outlined to show how student motivation can be initiated and maintained. The next chapter introduces the task-based language teaching approach thoroughly explaining the concept of a task in order to grasp its main ideas and differences compared to an exercise. Then the various task types and the role of teacher and learner will be explored to see how they operate in the EFL classroom. Thereafter, Jane Willis' TBL framework will be presented by discussing the aim of each stage in detail. Lastly, a sample lesson designed by Jane Willis will be presented to demonstrate the implementation of TBLT and to scrutinize its impact on student motivation. Therefore, the previously mentioned aspects

Book excerpt: Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is a modern management tool for performance measurement and was developed in the early 1990s to overcome the limitations of managing only with financial measures. The BSC supports translating organization's strategy into action by defining specific goals and objectives associated with the organization's vision, providing measures, and indicating initiatives to reach those goals. It helps to solve a big problem in the practice, namely the strategy concept is often brilliant but the realizations fail. The aim of this study is to analyze whether the Balanced Scorecard can solve all problems of traditional accounting systems. To answer this question, firstly, typical problems of traditional accounting systems are studied. Afterwards, the basic concept as well as benefits and drawbacks of BSC are viewed into details. Finally, the limits and difficulties of BSC realization in practice and initiates to avoid the pitfalls are illuminated.

Chapters have been written exclusively for this volume by several of the leading researchers and application developers active in the field. The first six chapters focus on low energy operating systems, or more in general, energy-aware middleware services. The next five chapters are centered on compilation and code optimization. Finally, the last chapter takes a more general viewpoint on mobile computing. The material demonstrates the state-of-the-art work and proves that to obtain the best energy/performance characteristics, compilers, system software, and architecture must work together. The relationship between energy-aware middleware and wireless microsensors, mobile computing and other wireless applications are covered. This work will be of interest to researchers in the areas of low-power computing, embedded systems, compiler optimizations, and operating systems.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Tourism, Griffith University, course: PhD, language: English, abstract: After the end of nearly three decades of civil war in 2009, Sri Lanka is experiencing a tourism boom with a record level of international tourist arrivals. The Sri Lankan government has now identified tourism as a main component in its post-war development strategy. Despite this new policy enthusiasm there is dearth of research on tourism in Sri Lanka. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to contribute to the literature on tourism in Sri Lanka in a number of ways. First, it provides a systematic historical narrative on Sri Lankan tourism and explains how Sri Lanka missed opportunities in the past. Second, it develops a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model focusing on tourism and constructs a database with an emphasis on tourism. Third, it examines the economy-wide effects of the post-war tourism boom in Sri Lanka.
