Book Synopsis Family Involvement in Children's Education by : Janie E. Funkhouser
Download or read book Family Involvement in Children's Education written by Janie E. Funkhouser and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schools that are most successful in engaging parents and other family members in support of their children's learning look beyond traditional definitions of parent involvement--parent teacher organizations or signing report cards--to a broader conception of supporting families in activities outside of school that can encourage their children's' learning. This idea book is intended to assist educators, parents, and policy makers as they develop school-family partnerships, identifying and describing successful strategies used by 20 local Title I programs. Following an executive summary, the book notes resources for involving families in education, includes research supporting such partnerships, and describes how Title I encourages partnerships. Next, the book describes successful local approaches to family involvement in education, organized around strategies for overcoming common barriers to family involvement, including: (1) overcoming time and resource constraints; (2) providing information and training to parents and school staff; (3) restructuring schools to support family involvement; (4) bridging school-family differences; and (5) tapping external supports for partnerships. Finally, the book presents conclusions about establishing and sustaining partnerships, noting that at the same time that successful partnerships share accountability, specific stakeholders must assume individual responsibility, and that those schools that succeed in involving large numbers of parents invest energy in finding solutions for problems, not excuses. Four appendices present profiles of 10 successful partnerships, descriptions in table format of 20 successful local approaches, contact information for profiled partnership programs, and resources for building successful partnerships. Contains 13 references. (HTH)

Book Synopsis Parent and Community Involvement in Education by : Barry Rutherford
Download or read book Parent and Community Involvement in Education written by Barry Rutherford and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on parent, family, and community involvement in middle-grade education. It addressed three reform themes in the area of middle-grade school/family and community partnerships: (1) What are the larger and local environments within which parent, family, and community involvement operate? How do these contextual factors influence those programs? (2) What are the roles that parents, families, and community and business members assume in the education of their children? How are those roles facilitated? What key elements are specific to these areas? and (3) What are the effects of promising programs on parents, students, schools, and the community? How are these effects assessed or determined? Findings show that challenges can create opportunities for family involvement; strong relationships form the core of family and community involvement; responsibilities and decision making need to be shared among all participants; sustained family and community involvement depends on active advocacy by leaders; and active partnerships require a system of support to sustain them. Implications for policymakers include a focus on success for all students as the core of policy for education reform, whereby school, family, and community partnerships are supported. Appendix A contains references, and Appendix B contains a bibliography of current products. (RT)

Book Synopsis The Home-school Connection by : Carter H. Collins
Download or read book The Home-school Connection written by Carter H. Collins and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unusual because they involve students above the primary level, the programs described in this report are designed to involve parents more fully in the education of their children. Presented are 28 programs in grades 4-12 initiated by school systems in large cities and operating during the 1980-81 school year. Information about the programs was gathered through telephone conversations and through visits to seven programs. School systems were asked to provide information on programs that might help parents act in educational capacities, such as home tutors, monitors of homework and attendance, or guides for their children in the use of community educational resources. A general discussion section highlights salient features from all programs, promising practices, components of a comprehensive program, and strategies for program development. The 28 program profiles include program objectives, major activities, staffing, target populations, funding, evaluations, materials available, and the name of a contact person. The seven in-depth reports resulting from site visits cover each program's objectives, rationale, development, operation, cost and personnel information, supporting and inhibiting factors, evidence of success, and other areas. A table classifying the main characteristics of each program assists readers in locating programs of interest. (Author/JM)
