Book excerpt: The flowfield on a segmented multi-slotted wind tunnel wall was studied at transonic speeds by measurements in and near the wall layer using five port cone probes. The slotted wall flowfield was observed to be three-dimensional in nature for a relatively significant distance above the slot. The boundary layer characteristics measured on the single slotted wall were found to be very sensitive to the applied suction through the slot. The perturbation in the velocity components generated due to the flow through the slot decay rapidly in the transverse direction. A vortex-like flow existed on the single slotted wall for natural ventilation but diminished with increased suction flow rate. For flow on a segmented multi-slotted wall, the normal velocity component changes were found to be maximum for measurement points located between the segmented slots atop the active chamber. The lateral influence due to applied suction and blowing, through a compartment, exceeded only slightly that in the downstream direction. Limited upstream influence was observed. Influence coefficients were determined from the data in the least-square sense for blowing and suction applied through one and two compartments. Book excerpt: Summary: The degree to which experimental results obtained under choking conditions in a wind tunnel with solid walls simulate those associated with an unbounded flow with free-stream Mach number 1 is investigated for the cases of two-dimensional and axisymmetric flows. It is found that a close resemblance does indeed exist in the vicinity of the body, and that the results obtained in this way are generally at least as accurate as those obtained in a transonic wind tunnel with partly open test section. Some of the results indicate, however, that substantial interference effects, particularly those of the wave reflection type, may be encountered under certain conditions, both in choked wind tunnels and in transonic wind tunnels, and that the reduction of these interference effects to acceptable limits may require the use of models of unusually small size.

This AGARDograph was planned by the AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel to be a modern sequel of the successful AGARDograph 109 "Subsonic Wind Tunnel Wall Corrections", which was published in 1966. AGARDogaph 109 is still valid and continues to be used to provide wall corrections in many wind tunnels. Nevertheless, in the thirty two years since the publication of AGARDograph 109, much work has been done on the subject, and the influence of the new tool of numerical fluid dynamics was so strong, that a sequel to AGARDograph 109 was considered to be necessary.

This has been achieved through studying experimentally the flow at and through slotted walls and through developing theoretical models for such flows. The final result is a homogenous wall boundary condition to be used when computing numerically the three-dimensional transonic flow around a wind-tunnel model, be it to determine the interference from the test-section walls or to adjust the wall parameters for zero interference. The boundary condition is of rather general applicability, admitting great freedom in the choice of slot geometry and facilitating the inclusion of corrections for viscous effects, such as disclosed by the experiments.
