Book Synopsis Unit Manufacturing Processes by : National Research Council
Download or read book Unit Manufacturing Processes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing, reduced to its simplest form, involves the sequencing of product forms through a number of different processes. Each individual step, known as an unit manufacturing process, can be viewed as the fundamental building block of a nation's manufacturing capability. A committee of the National Research Council has prepared a report to help define national priorities for research in unit processes. It contains an organizing framework for unit process families, criteria for determining the criticality of a process or manufacturing technology, examples of research opportunities, and a prioritized list of enabling technologies that can lead to the manufacture of products of superior quality at competitive costs. The study was performed under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department's Manufacturing Technology Program.
Book Synopsis Friction and Lubrication in Hot Metal Deformation by : Marshall B. Peterson
Download or read book Friction and Lubrication in Hot Metal Deformation written by Marshall B. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to investigate the frictional behavior of metals in hot metal deformation. The purpose of the study was to gain a better understanding of friction at high pressures and temperatures characteristic of metal-working processes. A test technique was developed in which a thin foil was compressed between a hardened anvil and a flat plate. Friction was determined by applying a tangential force to one of the specimens. A technique was also developed to evaluate lubricants based upon the surface deformation they would withstand. These techniques were used to measure the coefficient of friction and surface damage of various pure metals and alloys in both the lubricated and the unlubricated condition, at temperatures to 1800 F and pressures to 200,000 psi. It was found that this test uniquely yielded the friction coefficient of a given metal combination at a particular pressure and interface temperature. The variables found to be most significant in the pressure range 8000 to 200,000 psi are the roughness, temperature, surface oxide, and tool materials. Over this pressure range, friction is primarily determined by the strength of the metal. Adhesion effects modify the friction but primarily determine the extent of metal transfer.

Download or read book Metal Deformation Processing written by F. W. Boulger and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Metalworking Processes and Equipment Program, information was collected on deformation characteristics of metals and their effect on processing operations. The report presents the information collected from technical engineering reports on Government contracts and from general engineering and metallurgical publications. The objective is to help the nonspecialist in recognizing the implications of scientific findings and in applying them in specific operations. This report contains a series of articles covering the following subjects: Ductile Fracture; Application of High Pressure to the Forming of Brittle Metals; Superplasticity; Lubrication in Metal-Deformation Processes; Swaging; Adiabatic Conditions in Deformation Processing; Residual Stresses produced by Deformation. These subjects are treated in two ways: (1) generalized discussions of common processes point out why specific variables must be modified in order to deform certain types of metals satisfactorily; and (2) data on the more difficult-to-form metals are used to illustrate the principles, limitations, and effects of the processes. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New materials are constantly being developed which may improve or transform many aspects of our lives, and nowhere is this more exciting than in the fields of vehicle and machinery technology. This book presents the proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on New Materials, Machinery and Vehicle Engineering (NMMVE 2022), held as a virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, from 18 - 20 March 2022. NMMVE 2022 provides an international forum for researchers and engineers to present and discuss recent advances, new techniques, and applications in the fields of new materials, machinery and vehicle engineering, and attracts academics, scientists, engineers, postgraduates, and other professionals from a wide range of universities and institutions. A total of 121 submissions were received, from which 48 were accepted for inclusion in the conference and proceeding after a rigorous, standard single-blind reviewing process. The papers are grouped into 3 sections: machinery (30 papers); new materials (11 papers); and vehicle engineering (7 papers). Providing an overview of the latest developments in these fields, the book will be of interest to all those wishing to know more about new materials and machine and vehicle engineering.
