Book excerpt: This dissertation describes advanced techniques of phase space manipulations of the electron beam for improving performance and efficiency of high brightness X-ray light sources based on the free-electron Laser (FEL) and inverse-Compton scattering (ICS) processes. In particular, it first discusses a novel bunch-compression scheme based on a double transverse-to-longitudinal phase-space exchanger - dubbed emittance exchanger (EEX) - separated by a demagnifying transverse-optics system. While the outline of the scheme is quite sophisticated, the basic physics behind it is quite straight-forward. The benefits and disadvantages of these scheme are compared to the conventional approach of compressing a bunch using a magnetic bunch-compression chicane. The second scheme discussed in this dissertation is a novel beamline for imposing and removing the energy slew along the bunch also known as chirping and dechirping the beam in the accelerator community. This scheme consists of transverse deflecting cavities separated by drifts and relies on imposing and removing the transverse-longitudinal correlations on the electron beam. The benefits of this alternative method are compared with standard schemes of chirping and dechirping the beam via an off-crest acceleration. Finally, a novel 6-dimensional theory of the ICS source concludes this dissertation. It derives the photon distribution in 6D phase space describing radiation produced in the process of scattering a laser pulse off a relativistic electron beam as a function of electron distribution in the phase space using the Wigner function formalism. This result opens up the possibility for the optimization of the brightness of an ICS source via imposing transverse-longitudinal correlations on the beam.

These are produced using the so-called inverse Compton effect, whereby optical laser photons are collided with a relativistic electron beam. The back-scattered photons are then kinematically boosted to keV x-ray energies. We have first demonstrated these beams using a 20 MeV electron beam collided with a 100 MW, 7 ns Nd; YAG laser. We observed narrow LCS x-ray spectral peaks resulting from the interaction of the electron beam with the Nd; YAG laser second harmonic (532 nm). The LCS x-ray energy lines and energy deviations were measured as a function of the electron beam energy and enery-spread respectively. The results showed good agreement with the predicted valves. LCS could provide an exellent probe of electron beam energy, energy spread, transverse and longitudinal distribution and direction.

The major emphasis of the research was to obtain design criteria for the development of a two-stage FEL oscillator operating in the trapped particle mode. The present work was centered on the development of a fully relativistic, nonlinear analysis of the spatial and temporal evolution of multiple modes within a free electron laser oscillator and of a large amplitude, nonlinearly saturated state characteristic of trapped particle mode operation. The equations solved are the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics coupled with the collisionless Boltzmann equation that describes collisionless particles under influence of the electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic fields include the radiation fields from the FEL and the self-electric fields from the longitudinal potential due to the space charge, i.e., the dominant component of the interparticle Coulomb forces. The particle dynamics transverse to the magnetic axis are included, but gradients in the radiation fields are ignored. The electron beam equilibrium is assumed to be spatially uniform and temporally stationary. Justification and probable impact of further approximations are discussed in the technical section of this report. Book excerpt: This is the final report of the Free Electron Laser Theoretical Study carried out by TRW for the AFOSR during the period July 80 to September 81. Four distinct but interrelated problems that play an important role in the characteristics of a Free Electron Laser oscillator were investigated: (1) Transverse Effects: The effect of wiggler field inhomogeneity as well as the influence of different transverse profiles of the signal field and the electron beam on the FEL characteristics were studied in detail. A dramatic decrease in gain and efficiency is found with increasing value of the ratio of electron beam radius to photon beam radius. (2) Small Signal (SS) Gain: A1-D investigation of the small signal gain for a Tapered Wiggler Free Electron Laser was performed analytically for cold electron beams and numerically for cold and warm electron beams. It was found that the small signal gain spectrum shifts and decreases in amplitude as a function of increasing wiggler taper. (3) Multicomponent Wiggler Free Electron Laser (MCWFEL): The results from (1) and (2) motivated the development of a new FEL configuration that could have high small signal gain and sufficiently high efficiency at high powers with nearly the same output frequency. The new FEL is a combination of several wiggler components. (4) Finite Pulse Length Simulations and Kinetic Effects of Trapped Particle Instabilities in Free Electron Lasers: A 1-D finite pulse code was developed and the effects of pulse slippage detrapping of electrons at the beam edge and parasitic instabilities investigated for a tapered wiggler Free Electron Laser.
