Book excerpt: Transonic wind tunnel tests were conducted on a body of revolution with various fin configurations to investigate jet plume effects on missile longitudinal stability. A series of cold air normal jets located downstream of the base were utilized to simulate the jet plume. Fins of various planform geometry were tested at a forward longitudinal location only. The angle of attack range was -4 to 11 degrees at Mach numbers of from 0.2 to 2.3. The test was run at the Arnold Engineering Development Center Transonic (16T) and Supersonic (16S) wind tunnels and was designated AEDC SF172/TF360. (Author).

Book excerpt: Transonic wind tunnel tests were conducted on a sting-mounted model to determine thrust effects on longitudinal stability characteristics of several body-fin combinations. The plume was simulated by cold air ejected from a series of sonic jets normal to the missile axis. One fin configuration was tested at several longitudinal positions. Adverse plume effects on stability were reduced by location of fins a distance forward of the base. The test was conducted at the Calspan Corporations' 8 foot Transonic Wind Tunnel at Mach numbers ranging from 0.4 to 1.25. Angles of attack ranged from -4 degrees to 12 degrees. Data were also obtained at roll angles of 22.5 degrees and 45 degrees for one configuration.

This book was released on 1947 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Tests were conducted to determine the effects of viscosity on the drag and base pressure characteristics of various bodies of revolution at a Mach number of 1.5. The models were tested both with smooth surfaces and with roughness added to evaluate the effects of Reynolds number for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers. The principal geometric variables investigated were after-body shape and length-diameter ratio. For most models, force tests and base pressure measurements were made over a range of Reynolds numbers, based on model length, from 0.6 million to 5.0 millions. Schlieren photographs were used to analyze the effects of viscosity on flow separation and shock-wave configuration near the base and to verify the condition of the boundary layer as deduced from force tests. The results are discussed and compared with theoretical calculations.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to investigate the interaction effects which occur between the nozzle exhaust flow and the external flow field associated with isolated nozzle afterbody configurations at transonic Mach numbers. Pressure data were obtained from three afterbody geometries with boattail angles of 10, 15, and 25 deg at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.5 at zero angles of attack and sideslip. Cold (High-pressure air) and hot (Air/ethylene combustion) jet test techniques were used to simulate and duplicate, respectively, the nozzle exhaust flow for a sonic jet installation. Nozzle exhaust temperature was varied from 540 to approximately 2,900 R. The most significant results pertain to those effects on boattail pressure drag caused by exhaust plume temperature and flow asymmetry (Model support strut induced). The differences obtained in boattail pressure drag between the cold jet simulation and hot jet duplication results were significant at nozzle pressure ratios representative for turbofan and turbojet engines at subsonic Mach numbers. Adjusting the cold jet nozzle pressure ratio to correct for changes in the exhaust plume specific heat ratio with temperature did not account for the differences observed. Flow asymmetry effects were Mach number and nozzle pressure ratio dependent and increased in severity as the boattail angle was increased.

Book excerpt: In pursuit of more efficient and effective fuel-air mixing for a SCRAMJET combustor, this study was conducted to investigate relative near field enhancements of penetration and mixing of a discrete low-angled (25 deg) injected air jet into a supersonic (M=2.9) cross flow. The enhancements were achieved by injecting the transverse air jet parallel to the compression face of eight different ramp geometries. The jet-ramp interactions created collinear shock structures, baroclinic torque vorticity enhancement, ramp spillage enhanced vorticity, magnus effect penetration enhancement, and increased total pressure loss. Shadowgraph photography was used to identify the shock structures and interactions in the flow field. Measurements of mean flow properties were used to establish the jet plume size, jet plume penetration and to quantify the total pressure loss created by the ramps. Rayleigh-Mie scattering images were used for both qualitative flow field assessments and quantitative analysis of the plume trajectory and mixing rate. Results indicate that up to a 20% increase in penetration height and plume expansion can be achieved by injection over a ramp compared to simple transverse injection. This increase in penetration and mixing incurs up to a 15% loss in total pressure. The most critical geometric aspects that affect the flow are the ramp compression face shape and frontal aspect, and the location and strength of ramp generated expansion.

Book excerpt: The similarities between the airplane and the missile extend beyond their flying capabilities, and at higher operational speeds, the configuration distinctions become even less apparent. " Missile Aerodynamics," a classic now available from AIAA and Nielsen Engineering and Research, Inc., combines the best of missile and airplane aerodynamics, drawing extensively from numerous technical papers to present a rational and unified account of the principles behind missile projection. Evaluate the missile versus the airplane in a multitude of areas, from longitudinal acceleration, wing loading, roll and dynamic stability, guidance and navigation, and more. J.N. Nielsen covers every aspect of missile aerodynamics, from the classification of missiles and basic formulas to innovative aerodynamic controls. In one reliable reference, readers will find hundreds of schematics, equations, and tables with practical applications in missile design and engineering.
