Book Synopsis Calibration and Comparison of Cobra Probe and Hot Wire Anemometer for Flow Measurements in Turbomachinery by : John H. Perry

This book was released on 1974 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative methods of measuring mean airflow properties within a turbomachine are considered. A three-tube impact pressure probe (Cobra tube) has been calibrated to relate functions of the three tube impact pressures, total pressure and velocity to the angle at which the instrument is yawed to the calibration stream direction for angles between + 60 deg. This permits the flow properties of total pressure, velocity and yaw angle to be established from probe readings obtained by traversing a flow annulus with a tube aligned with the tunnel axis. Curve fitting functions have been developed to enable the calibration relations to be applied to computer orientated data reduction programs. Similarly, calibration functions relating flow direction to velocity and wire angle of a hot wire anemometer probe in terms of bridge voltage, have been assessed. Reynolds number influences are shown to be small for the Cobra tube and negligible for the hot wire anemometer. The two measurement systems have been compared by using the two instruments independently, to measure properties of flow and angle upstream and downstream of a single stage axial flow rotor/ stator research fan. Good agreement was obtained.

Book Synopsis Calibration of a Hot-Wire/Hot-Film Anemometer Over a Range of Temperatures, Velocities, and Pressures by : Denise C. Oka
Download or read book Calibration of a Hot-Wire/Hot-Film Anemometer Over a Range of Temperatures, Velocities, and Pressures written by Denise C. Oka and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the possibility of developing a single calibration equation that would be applicable to a wide range of temperatures (68 F to 250 F), velocities (150 to 800 ft/sec), and pressures (15 to 33 psia). A platinum hot film, with a high enough operating temperature to provide good sensitivity to velocity, was calibrated at seven different temperature/pressure conditions. The data was used to calculate velocity, Reynolds number and Nusselt number, and a linear least squares curve fit was applied to the data as a function of Reynolds number raised to an exponent and as a function of Nusselt number times a load factor raised to an exponent. The exponents were chosen, through an iterative process, to provide the best agreement between the data and the curve fit equation. The results indicate that as the range of conditions is allowed to increase ao does the error between measured velocity and velocity derived from the calibration equation.

This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One cannot overemphasize the importance of studying fluids in motion or at rest for a variety of scientific and engineering endeavors. Fluid mechanics as an art reaches back into antiquity, but its rational formulation is a relatively recent undertaking. Much of the physics of a particular flow situation can be understood by conducting appropriate experiments. Flow visualization techniques offer a useful tool to establish an overall picture of a flow field and to delineate broadly its salient features before embarking on more detailed quantitative measurements. Among the single-point measurements that are particularly difficult are those in separated flows, non-Newtonian fluids, rotating flows, and nuclear aerosols. Pressure, shear stress, vorticity, and heat transfer coefficient are also difficult quantities to measure, particularly for time-dependent flows. These and other special situations are among the topics covered in this volume. Each article emphasizes the development of a particular measuring technique. The topics covered were chosen because of their importance to the field, recent appeal, and potential for future development. The articles are comprehensive and coverage is pedagogical with a bias towards recent developments.
