Book excerpt: "The remarkable growth of the wood composite panel sector constitutes one of the success storiesof the Canadian wood industry in the second half of the twentieth century - a success story that can be maintained well into the twenty-first century if we begin to prepare for it now. ... This Technology Roadmap demonstrates that the sector's success has been driven by technology which has broadened the range of usable raw materials, reduced manufacturing costs and increased product quality. Today, as the industry's confidence is somewhat tempered by concerns over wood supplies or over-capacity, it is appropriate to analyze the situation and determine what knowledge will most likely help the industry meet its challenges. Building on the collective knowledge of the industry and its partners, the Roadmap provides this type of analysis. It also provides many elements for the development of a strategic plan that will deliver the required knowledge through a coordinated research and development effort and technology transfer program involving all of the industry's stakeholders"--Foreword, page vii.

This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a shift in research and industrial practice, and products traditionally manufactured primarily from wood are increasingly combined with other nonwood materials of either natural or synthetic origin. Wood and other plant-based fiber is routinely combined with adhesives, polymers, and other "ingredients" to produce composite materials. Introduction to Wood and Natural Fiber Composites draws together widely scattered information concerning fundamental concepts and technical applications, essential to the manufacture of wood and natural fiber composites. The topics addressed include basic information on the chemical and physical composition of wood and other lignocellulosic materials, the behavior of these materials under thermocompression processes, fundamentals of adhesion, specific adhesive systems used to manufacture composite materials, and an overview of the industrial technologies used to manufacture major product categories. The book concludes with a chapter on the burgeoning field of natural fiber-plastic composites. Introduction to Wood and Natural Fiber Composites is a valuable resource for upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students studying forest products and wood science, as well as for practicing professionals working in operational areas of wood- and natural-fiber processing. For more information on the Wiley Series in Renewable Resources, visit www.wiley.com/go/rrs Topics covered include: Overview of lignocellulosic material, their chemical and physical composition Consolidation behavior of wood and fiber in response to heat and pressure Fundamentals of adhesion Adhesives used to bond wood and lignocellulosic composites Manufacturing technology of major product types Fiber/plastic composites

Book excerpt: This paper summarizes a cooperative research program between the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), in Madison, Wisconsin, and Forintek Canada Corp. in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This research program provided detailed creep--rupture and some creep information for composite panel products. Commercially produced plywood, oriented strandboard (OSB), and minimally aligned waferboard were tested to identify nine mills (three for each product) that produced panels with a range of flexural creep performance. The three plywood, three OSB, and three waferboard products (nine products total, one from each mill) were then tested to provide information on their duration of load (DOL) and creep performance. Large panel specimens were subjected to both rampload and constant-load tests under one environmental condition. The constant-load results provided conventional or deterministic DOL factors that compared favorably with National Design Specifications recommended for adjusting lumber design strength properties under dry service conditions. Ramp-load specimen data generally indicated a lower rate of damage accumulation than did data for constant-load specimens. Creep tests at two low constant-load levels were also performed on large specimens under three environmental conditions for a 6-month period. Those results suggested that present deterministic creep factors in panel design practice might be acceptable for plywood under the influence of relatively severe conditions, for OSB in moderate conditions, and for waferboard in dry service environmental conditions.
