Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate how the frictional coefficient was affected due to intraoral use. A secondary aim of this study was to determine whether or not there was a relationship between corrosion of orthodontic alloys and friction via scanning electron microscopic qualitative analysis. Orthodontic brackets and 0.019 x 0.025 inch stainless steel archwires were collected and divided into three groups of n=10: used bracket and used wires (UBUW), used brackets and new wires (UBNW), and new brackets and new wires (NBNW). 'New' materials were as-received from the manufacturer, and 'used' materials were clinically used bracket and wires collected from patients following orthodontic treatment. Archwires were pulled through bracket slots at a rate of 0.5mm/min while friction forces were measured. Following a cleaning process, the surface topography of the bracket slots was examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on a 1-factor MANOVA, there was no significant group effect (all p>0.05) on frictional forces. Partial eta squared values indicated that intraoral exposure had only a small effect on frictional forces (

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing use of sliding mechanics in orthodontics has led to considerable research interest in the frictional forces developed due to interactions between the archwires and bracket.Reduced friction and light orthodontic forces are both biologically and mechanically advantageous as they reduce the undesirable reactionary forces, which can complicate the simplicity of the desired mechanics and also lead to root resorption. It is clear that the nature of ligation has a bearing on friction within the appliance system. Literature search on studies conducted reveal that SLB's have comparatively less friction than conventional ligating appliance system. Research on frictional resistance to orthodontic tooth movement in-vivo is complex, hence knowledge is almost entirely derived from laboratory-based investigations using simulated oral environments.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Corrosion of orthodontic appliances has been shown to affect the efficiency of orthodontic brackets and can lead to weakening and/or failure of the appliance. The acidity of the oral environment and fluoride have been shown to increase the corrosion of orthodontic brackets which releases metal ions in the oral cavity. Minimizing the potential of corrosion is essential for efficient orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the effects of over the counter fluoride mouthwashes on the amount of ion release and the change in surface characteristics of stainless steel self-ligating orthodontic brackets. Methods: One hundred and forty mandibular premolar stainless steel self-ligating were used in the study. The brackets were divided into seven groups and immersed in their assigned solution: Act Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash, Listerine Total Care Anticavity Mouthwash, Colgate PreviDent Dental Rinse, Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash, aqueous solution with a pH of 3.5, 0.05% NaF solution, and distilled deionized water. The brackets were immersed in 60mL of their assigned solution and stored in an incubator set at 37° C for 45 days. After 45 days, the amount of ion release of nickel, chromium, and iron from each solution was tested using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. One randomly selected bracket from the manufacturer’s package and one randomly selected bracket from each group were evaluated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze bracket surface morphological changes after the test. Results: Descriptive statistics were done on the weight of the brackets of each group, the pH of the solutions, and the amount of ion release for each solution. There was a significant change in weight in the Listerine Total Care group and the ACT group. The NaF solution had the highest average pH and Listerine Total Care had the lowest average pH. There was a significant change in pH in the Listerine Total Care group, the pH 3.5 solution group, and the Listerine Antiseptic group. A general linear model ANOVA was used to evaluate the ion release and to provide comparisons between each group. For Chromium ion, the highest average release was seen in the NaF solution and the lowest was seen in the ACT solution. For Nickel ion, the highest average release was seen in the Listerine Total Care solution and the lowest was seen in the NaF solution. For Iron ion, the highest average release was seen in the Listerine Total Care solution and the lowest was seen in the control group distilled water. SEM evaluation revealed that the highest scores were given to Listerine Total Care bracket slot, Listerine Antiseptic bracket slot, and pH 3.5 bracket slot. Conclusions: The results of this study reveal that fluoride mouthwashes, with higher acidity, can cause more corrosion of orthodontic brackets than mouthwashes with lower acidity. It is important for the orthodontist to choose a rinse with a higher pH value to minimize the corrosion potential and for the orthodontist to understand the effect of the hygiene products on the orthodontic appliances.
