Book excerpt: Drawing on two decades of survey research involving thousands of ministers nationwide, five social scientists explore the political lives of clergy in eight evangelical and mainline Protestant denominations, including the Assemblies of God, Southern Baptist Convention, United Methodist Church, and Presbyterian Church. They find that the competing theological perspectives of orthodoxy and modernism are increasingly tied to ideological and partisan divisions in American politics, and help illuminate the current relationship between church and state in America. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is designed to present a comprehensive, up to date and safe approach to managing emergency general surgery patients with a minimally invasive approach. This book bridges the gap between the minimally invasive surgery (MIS) expert who may not routinely be involved in the care of the acute care surgery patient and the ACS expert surgeon who may not have a routine MIS elective practice. The first section reviews the physiology of the acute care surgery patient and the physiologic impact of MIS techniques including pnemoperitoneum in critically ill patients. This review is crucial to assure that the surgeon has a clear understanding of when a MIS approach is safe and when it can be potentially dangerous to the patient. The illustrations are presented in an atlas-style format to describe the surgical procedures. The authors of the various sections are minimally invasive and acute care surgeons from prominent academic centers. The format represents a narrative review with appropriate illustrations and links to online videos.

The use of medications (antibiotics, hormones, and biologic therapies) and interventional radiologic procedures as adjuncts or as replacements for the surgical solutions are discussed. The text covers emergencies that result as adverse effects for the systemic and local treatments for cancer, emergencies that result from mechanical issues with the cancer and those that result from surviving major extirpative surgery. Diagnosis and treatment of patients' immune-compromised or thrombocytopenic status from chemotherapy is discussed, as is surgical treatment in patients with prior complex surgical therapy or radiation treatment. Finally, the text covers alternatives to surgery, including new interventional radiologic and endoscopic procedures. Surgical Emergencies in the Cancer Patient will be of great value to healthcare professionals at all levels who are involved in the treatment of emergencies in the cancer patient. It is meant for a wide group of individuals, including medical students, residents in surgery and internal medicine, fellows in surgery and oncology, and practicing oncologists and surgeons. This work is meant to be a textbook for the student, a guide for the practitioner, and a reference for the general oncologist.

One, when her best friend moved away without saying goodbye. Two, when her beloved grandfather died. Three, when her first love wouldn't even hold her hand at the funeral. As Gottie spirals deeper into grief, her past literally comes back to haunt her when she is inexplicably sent back in time to good memories and bad, revisiting afternoons of kisses and days she wanted to forget forever. This summer, Gottie's past, present, and future are about to collide—and she's the only one who can figure out why. The Square Root of Summer is an exponentially enthralling story about love and loss, from debut YA voice, Harriet Reuter Hapgood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2010 U.S. Census data showed that over the last decade the Latino population grew from 35.3 million to 50.5 million, accounting for more than half of the nation’s population growth. The editors of The Roots of Latino Urban Agency, Sharon Navarro and Rodolfo Rosales, have collected essays that examine this phenomenal growth. The greatest demographic expansion of communities of Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans seeking political inclusion and access has been observed in Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and San Antonio. Three premises guide this study. The first premise holds that in order to understand the Latino community in all its diversity, the analysis has to begin at the grassroots level. The second premise maintains that the political future of the Latino community in the United States in the twenty-first century will be largely determined by the various roles they have played in the major urban centers across the nation. The third premise argues that across the urban political landscape the Latino community has experienced different political formations, strategies and ultimately political outcomes in their various urban settings. These essays collectively suggest that political agency can encompass everything from voting, lobbying, networking, grassroots organizing, and mobilization, to dramatic protest. Latinos are in fact gaining access to the same political institutions that worked so hard to marginalize them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American presidents often engage in intensive campaigns to obtain public support for their policy initiatives. This core strategy for governing is based on the premise that if presidents are skilled enough to exploit the “bully pulpit,” they can successfully persuade or even mobilize public opinion on behalf of their legislative goals. In this book, George Edwards analyzes the results of hundreds of public opinion polls from recent presidencies to assess the success of these efforts. Surprisingly, he finds that presidents typically are not able to change public opinion; even great communicators usually fail to obtain the public’s support for their high-priority initiatives. Focusing on presidents’ personae, their messages, and the American public, he explains why presidents are often unable to move public opinion and suggests that their efforts to do so may be counterproductive. Edwards argues that shoring up previously existing support is the principal benefit of going public and that “staying private”—negotiating quietly with elites—may often be more conducive to a president’s legislative success.

Through case studies of individual diseases and analyses of public awareness campaigns and institutional responses, later chapters provide important insights into the reasons why some illnesses receive more attention and funding than others."--Jacket.
