An attempt has been made in this overview to examine the ethical issues surrounding human-animal chimeras and their use in the production of organs for transplantation. Currently, there is a prodigious backlog of transplants in the United States. · The median wait time for an organ transplant is almost 5 years, and about 20 people die waiting on the transplant list every day. o This crisis has necessitated the development of new strategies to acquire organs for transplantation. Among these advances is the prospect of growing a custom organ for a recipient using chimeras. Chimeras are organisms made up of two genetically distinct types of cells. Chimerization can occur within a single species or between two different species. · The latter type has garnered interest among scientists as a possible method for generating organs suitable for human transplantation. The proposed strategy is to create a chimera from a non-human animal embryo, usually a: · pig, and · human stem cells. Eventually, after the chimera reaches adulthood, the stem cell donor will receive a transplant with a new, humanoid organ from the chimera. Naturally, crossing species and sacrificing animal lives for organ farming comes with some ethical baggage, but chimera research has been prominent for several decades and foretells a bright future. Book excerpt: Decolonial Animal Ethics in Linda Hogan’s Poetry and Prose is a plea for an urgent redefinition of human-animal relations on the basis of a nonanthropocentric animal ethic embraced by premodern Indigenous communities but depreciated by coloniality. Without decolonial revisions of animal subjectivity and personhood, the animal genocide can never truly stop. It is also a close reading of Linda Hogan’s poetry and prose in search of the coordinates of a decolonized animal ethic which would foster interspecies becoming. Having defined the recurring tropes, motifs, and attitudes that underpin Hogan’s treatment of nonhuman animals, the book moves on to trace the way she depicts the human-animal bond, especially in the face of the destructive anthropogenic impact. The first is where does our moral life come from? It presupposes that considering morality broadly is inadequate. Instead, different aspects need to be teased apart. It is not sufficient to assume that different virtues are bolted onto a vicious animality, red in tooth and claw. Nature and culture have interlaced histories. By weaving in evolutionary theories and debates on the evolution of compassion, justice and wisdom, it showa a richer account of who we are as moral agents. The second driving question concerns our relationships with animals. Deane-Drummond argues for a complex community-based multispecies approach. Hence, rather than extending rights, a more radical approach is a holistic multispecies framework for moral action. This need not weaken individual responsibility. She intends not to develop a manual of practice, but rather to build towards an alternative philosophically informed approach to theological ethics, including animal ethics. The theological thread weaving through this account is wisdom. Wisdom has many different levels, and in the broadest sense is connected with the flow of life understood in its interconnectedness and sociality. It is profoundly theological and practical. In naming the project the evolution of wisdom Deane-Drummond makes a statement about where wisdom may have come from and its future orientation. But justice, compassion and conscience are not far behind, especially in so far as they are relevant to both individual decision-making and institutions.
