Book Synopsis Object Relations Theory and Self Psychology in Soc by : Eda Goldstein
Download or read book Object Relations Theory and Self Psychology in Soc written by Eda Goldstein and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-07-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Relations and Self Psychology are two leading schools of psychological thought discussed in social work classrooms and applied by practitioners to a variety of social work populations. Yet both groups have lacked a basic manual for teaching and reference -- until now. For them, Dr. Eda G. Goldstein's book fills a void on two fronts: Part I provides a readable, systematic, and comprehensive review of object relations and self psychology, while Part II gives readers a friendly, step-by-step description and illustration of basic treatment techniques. For educators, this textbook offers a learned and accessible discussion of the major concepts and terminology, treatment principles, and the relationship of object relations and self psychology to classic Freudian theory. Practitioners find within these pages treatment guidelines for such varied problems as illness and disability, the loss of a significant other, and such special problems as substance abuse, child maltreatment, and couple and family disruptions. In a single volume, Dr. Goldstein has met the complex challenges of education and clinical practice.
Book Synopsis Sibling Relationships by : M. E. Lamb
Download or read book Sibling Relationships written by M. E. Lamb and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982. Since the emergence of developmental psychology early this century, theorists and researchers have emphasized the family’s role in shaping the child’s emergent social style, personality, and cognitive competence. In so doing, however, psychologists have implicitly adopted a fairly idiosyncratic definition of the family— one that focuses almost exclusively on parents and mostly on mothers. The realization that most families contain two parents and at least two children has occurred slowly, and has brought with it recognition that children develop in the context of a diverse network of social relationships within which each person may affect every other both directly (through their interactions) and indirectly (i.e., through A ’s effect on B, who in turn influences C). The family is such a social network, itself embedded in a broader network of relations with neighbors, relatives, and social institutions. Within the family, relationships among siblings have received little attention until fairly recently. In this volume, the goal is to review the existing empirical and theoretical literature concerning the nature and importance of sibling relationships.
Book Synopsis The Sense of an Ending by : Julian Barnes

Book excerpt: BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A novel that follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he never much thought about—until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance: one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Book Synopsis Awakening the Fire Within by : Lyse Lebeau
Download or read book Awakening the Fire Within written by Lyse Lebeau and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005-03-24 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates psychological, spiritual and pragmatic approaches to the mastery of life. It focuses on relationship, leadership and self-esteem. We know that what motivates our thoughts, feelings, words and actions is less than 10% at the level of the conscious mind. The driving forces in our lives do not exist at the surface of our minds, where we make our every day, 'conscious' decisions. What truly moves us lies buried deep within and we must become familiar with that shadowy underworld from where our real choices and actions are being motivated. In order to get into our personal 'underworld', where the real work must be done, we must go far beyond intellectualism, positive thinking, and 're-programming'. We have found that the practices of yoga, ranging from breathwork and postures to meditation and self-enquiry, are the most effective means of diving deep within the unconscious. As we follow the paths of yoga to the depths of the ocean of our own existence, we inevitably encounter the many shadowy forms of the unconscious lurking below the surface. It is by encountering, embracing and then releasing these submerged thought-forms and undigested feelings and sensations, that we will ultimately attain our 'pearl of great price', Self-realization. This book emphasizes the use of the breath as a potent means for exploring and clearing the unconscious. When integrated with an ability to recognize and understand how our negative, self-defeating 'patterns' operate, progress can be remarkably rapid and enduring. Finally, particular attention is given to the use of 'action' as a means to self-knowledge, self-healing and self-transformation. It is in the heat of action that we actually discover how we are put together and identify where we are weak and where we are strong. Breaking through our resignation and stepping out onto the playing field of life is accomplished in the field of action, where leadership resides.

Download or read book From Guilt to Shame written by Ruth Leys and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has shame recently displaced guilt as a dominant emotional reference in the West? After the Holocaust, survivors often reported feeling guilty for living when so many others had died, and in the 1960s psychoanalysts and psychiatrists in the United States helped make survivor guilt a defining feature of the "survivor syndrome." Yet the idea of survivor guilt has always caused trouble, largely because it appears to imply that, by unconsciously identifying with the perpetrator, victims psychically collude with power. In From Guilt to Shame, Ruth Leys has written the first genealogical-critical study of the vicissitudes of the concept of survivor guilt and the momentous but largely unrecognized significance of guilt's replacement by shame. Ultimately, Leys challenges the theoretical and empirical validity of the shame theory proposed by figures such as Silvan Tomkins, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Giorgio Agamben, demonstrating that while the notion of survivor guilt has depended on an intentionalist framework, shame theorists share a problematic commitment to interpreting the emotions, including shame, in antiintentionalist and materialist terms.
