Download or read book Reading Law written by Antonin Scalia and published by West Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Scalia and Garner systematically explain all the most important principles of constitutional, statutory, and contractual interpretation in an engaging and informative style with hundreds of illustrations from actual cases. Is a burrito a sandwich? Is a corporation entitled to personal privacy? If you trade a gun for drugs, are you using a gun in a drug transaction? The authors grapple with these and dozens of equally curious questions while explaining the most principled, lucid, and reliable techniques for deriving meaning from authoritative texts. Meanwhile, the book takes up some of the most controversial issues in modern jurisprudence. What, exactly, is textualism? Why is strict construction a bad thing? What is the true doctrine of originalism? And which is more important: the spirit of the law, or the letter? The authors write with a well-argued point of view that is definitive yet nuanced, straightforward yet sophisticated.

Book Synopsis The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles by : Franklin Scott Spencer
Download or read book The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles written by Franklin Scott Spencer and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduces literary, historical, and theological issues of Luke and Acts. Biblical texts create worlds of meaning, and invite readers to enter them. When readers enter such textual worlds, which are often strange and complex, they are confronted with theological claims. With this in mind, the purpose of the Interpreting Biblical Texts series is to help serious readers in their experience of reading and interpreting by providing guides for their journeys into textual worlds. The controlling perspective is expressed in the operative word of the title--interpreting. The primary focus of the series is not so much on the world behind the texts or out of which the texts have arisen as on the worlds created by the texts in their engagement with readers. In keeping with the goals of the series, this volume provides an introductory guide to readers of the New Testament books of Luke and Acts. It focuses on both the synchronic and diachronic dimensions of the literature in an effort to acquaint readers with literary, historical, and theological issues that will facilitate interpretation of these important books. F. Scott Spencer is Professor of New Testament at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond.

Book Synopsis On Reading Prophetic Texts by : Dijkstra
Download or read book On Reading Prophetic Texts written by Dijkstra and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume have been written in memory of the feminist biblical scholar, Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes, who died at the early age of 50. The authors endeavour to continue and advance the dialogue with her by evaluating and interacting with her scholarly legacy. Their concern is with various aspects of her work on the Hebrew Bible, and they respond in particular to the feminist hermeneutics she developed for reading biblical texts. Several articles test her method in application to specific prophetic texts. Other contributions focus on aspects of the role of women in the cults of Ancient Israel. A third group of essays confronts Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes' approach with more traditional ways of biblical interpretation. This book is an important contribution to the ongoing debate on feminist insights into aspects of the literature, culture and religion of Ancient Israel.

Book Synopsis Interpreting Philosophy by : Nicholas Rescher
Download or read book Interpreting Philosophy written by Nicholas Rescher and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphilosophy is philosophy’s poor and neglected cousin. Philosophers are on the whole too busy doing philosophy to take time to stand back and consider reflectively how the project itself actually works. And they lead tend to produce texts without too much consideration of how this looks from the standpoint of the consumer. All this, it seems to be, affords good reason for attending to philosophical hermeneutics, reflecting on the issue of how philosophical texts are to be understood and interpreted.
Book Synopsis INTERPRETING THE BIBLE by : Edward D. Andrews
Download or read book INTERPRETING THE BIBLE written by Edward D. Andrews and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "INTERPRETING THE BIBLE: Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics" is a seminal book crafted by Edward D. Andrews to guide students, ministers, and anyone interested in understanding the Bible more deeply. This book is unique in its approach, as it not only delves into the principles of biblical interpretation inherent in the Bible but also paves the way for readers to interpret, teach, and preach God's Word with profound insight. Understanding the Bible goes beyond surface reading—it requires a careful analysis of its genres, historical context, and language. This book serves as a foundational guide for such an examination, requiring no prior understanding of biblical languages or hermeneutics, yet empowering the reader with a working knowledge of biblical interpretation. "Biblical Hermeneutics," as Andrews elucidates, is both a science and an art, forming a crucial component of theological sciences. This truth is particularly salient for conservative Protestantism, which holds the Bible as the sole authoritative voice of God to mankind. In "INTERPRETING THE BIBLE: Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics," Andrews sheds light on the multifaceted nature of biblical interpretation. He instructs readers on how to discern the various biblical genres and understand the original meanings intended by the Bible authors from a conservative grammatical-historical perspective. But more than that, he guides readers on how to apply these timeless truths to their own lives. This book is more than a guide; it's an invitation to journey deeper into the realms of biblical understanding. It is a must-read for anyone who seeks to broaden their comprehension of the Bible, interpret its sacred teachings accurately, and apply its profound wisdom to everyday life.

Book Synopsis Children Reading Pictures by : Evelyn Arizpe
Download or read book Children Reading Pictures written by Evelyn Arizpe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fascinating results of a two year study of children's responses to contemporary picturebooks. Children of primary school age, from a range of backgrounds, read and discussed books by the award-winning artists, Anthony Browne and Satoshi Kitamura. They then made their own drawings in response to the books. The authors found that children are sophisticated readers of visual texts, and are able to make sense of complex images on literal, visual and metaphorical levels. They are able to understand different viewpoints, analyse moods, messages and emotions, and articulate personal responses to picturebooks - even when they struggle with the written word. With colour illustrations, and interviews with the two authors whose books were included in the study, this book demonstrates how important visual literacy is to children's understanding and development. Primary and Early Years teachers, literacy co-ordinators and all those interested in children's literature will find this a captivating read.
Book Synopsis Hedges in Chinese-English Conference Interpreting by : Juan Hu
Download or read book Hedges in Chinese-English Conference Interpreting written by Juan Hu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explored interpreters’ role when interpreting for Chinese government press conference and discovered the role deviation of conference interpreters in Chinese–English conference interpreting, by taking corpus-based approach to analyze hedges in interpreting discourse. So far, the discovery of role deviation for conference interpreters in this book is relevantly fresh in conceptual, empirical, and methodological aspects, against the background that conference interpreters are traditionally assumed to be invisible and passive “non-person.” Arguably, this book revisited and renewed the concept of interpreters’ role, offered a role theory-based theoretical framework in some potential issues in future studies, designed a novel empirical route by using hedges as the intervening points to gain insight into interpreters’ role, and applied Python-a new natural language processing programming in data extraction. Thus, this book is believed to contribute some new conceptual, theoretical as well as methodological significance to the future studies on interpreters’ role and performance. This book is intended to act as a useful reference for scholars, practitioners, interpreters, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and anyone who shows interest in interpreters’ role and performance, corpus-based interpreting product.
Book Synopsis Interpreting Ecclesiastes: Readers Old and New by : Katherine J. Dell
Download or read book Interpreting Ecclesiastes: Readers Old and New written by Katherine J. Dell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-09-08 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of texts come from all generations, from different contexts and with different agendas. This book gives a sample of what both ancient and contemporary readers have brought to the book of Ecclesiastes in the quest for illumination of the text and for their own enlightenment, often furnishing their own agenda. Debates over meaning are formed, shaped, and illuminated by the interpreters themselves. Part One looks at ancient interpreters and at their methods of approaching the text. Jewish and Christian interpreters alike sought to find meaning amongst some of the key puzzles of the book—why does the author call himself “the son of David” and appear to be Solomon when his pen name also seems to be Qoheleth? Why the contradictions in content? How did such an unorthodox book come to be canonized? How did the dualistic contemptus mundi interpretation of the vanity theme perpetuated by Jerome and others come to hold the field for so long? And how did Luther and the reformers seek to rectify that approach? These questions and others are addressed in this book, looking through the lens of past interpretation. Part Two acknowledges our increasing self-awareness of the importance of method in approaching biblical texts and turns to a sample of modern interpretations from familiar reading groups such as the ecologist, the animal theologian, the liberationist, the post-colonialist, and the feminist. It will be seen that different modern approaches often enlighten the interpretation of specific verses within Ecclesiastes and hence that no one method is a wholesale “solution” to interpretive concerns.
