In engaging and informal language, Ruth Price invites pianists to look for the "magic" in well-known works from both concert and student repertoire. What gives a piece its identity? How can we get inside the composition in order to develop an interpretation? What makes us fall in love with certain passages? Right Before Your Eyes passionately delves into piano music through score study, based on the idea that if we start with our emotional reactions to the music, analysis and interpretation will flow more naturally. It is a valuable guide to score study for students at every level, and a must-have book for every piano teacher.

Book excerpt: Playing Beyond the Notes: A Pianist's Guide to Musical Interpretation demystifies the complex concepts of musical interpretation in Western tonal piano music by boiling it down to basic principles in an accessible writing style. Author and veteran piano instructor Deborah Rambo Sinn tackles a different interpretive principle, explaining clearly, for example, how to play effective ornaments and rubatos. As a whole, the book helps pianists understand concrete ways to apply interpretive concepts to their own playing and gives teachers practical ways to teach interpretation to their students. The book is illustrated with over 200 repertoire excerpts and supplemented by a companion website with over 100 audio recordings. Playing Beyond the Notes is essential reading for all performing pianists, independent piano teachers, and piano pedagogy students.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ...softest piano. He took infinite pains to teach the pupil this cantabile way of playing. 'II (or elle) ne sait pas Her deux notes' was his severest censure. He also required adherence to the strictest rhythm, hated all lingering and dragging, misplaced rubatos, as well as exaggerated ritardandos. 'Je vois prie de vous asseoir, ' he said on such an occasion with gentle mockery. And it is just in this respect that people make such terrible mistakes in the execution of his works.... In the use of the pedal he had likewise attained the greatest mastery, was uncommonly strict regarding the misuse of it, and said repeatedly to the pupil, 'The correct employment of the pedal remains a study for life.'" Next in importance to Chopin's own words are perhaps those of Liszt, whose interpretations of Chopin's works were sometimes more satisfactory to the composer than his own. Liszt gave this explanation to a pupil: "Do you see those trees? The wind plays in the leaves, stirs up life among them, but the tree remains the same. That is the Chopin rubato...". "Through his peculiar style of performance, Chopin imparted the constant rocking with the most fascinating effect, thus making the melody undulate to and fro, like a skiff driven on over the bosom of tossing waves. This manner of execution, which set a seal so peculiar upon his own style of playing, was at first indicated by the term tempo rubato, affixed to his writings, a tempo agitated, broken, interrupted, a movement flexible, yet at the same time abrupt and languishing and vacillating as the flame under the fluctuating breath by which it is agitated. In his later productions we no longer find this mark. He was convinced that if the performer understood them he would divine...

Book excerpt: This is the A-G Piano Book Series, books of fun music for piano students! This book is generally meant to be used in combination with a piano teacher and for students about 7 or older. The music is written to be easy to learn by ear or by reading, and is heavily influenced by video game and film music. Witness a dragon war, jam with the alley ratz, fly in a beautiful airship, or stave off a zombie apocalypse! This is the third one, it's for advanced piano students to really show off what they've learned. Students will play challenging and fun new pieces featuring more complex syncopation and sixteenth notes. On the Methodology This a book for piano students with a teacher It is intended for slightly older piano students, 7+, but younger kids could enjoy it too! From a teaching perspective, it is written with the intention of decluttering music education. Every teacher has their own way of doing things and every student requires a unique approach to teaching. This book aims to provide educational materials and fun songs for students to play and learn from. The music has been written to be educational, but be rooted in contemporary aesthetics. Less classical, more like movie and video game music. This book is designed within a principal of minimalism. There are no teacher duet parts or long explanations of concepts. This music is designed to be more accessible to students who learn by ear and by pattern-recognition. When I was a piano student I always struggled with reading, but excelled at pieces where I could identify chord structures or patterns and then could just memorize it. I believe I'm not alone in this and a lot of other students are like this. This book is for them. In relation to a lot of other method books, the right hand has more shifting, and more difficult fingerings, but the left hand is much simpler. Fingering is often left up to interpretation deeper into the series. This book does very little hand holding. The whole series is structured a little bit like a video game. It gets a lot of the tutorials out of the way early on, and then focuses on teaching through experiential learning Please don't take this music too seriously! Change notes, add your own flare, play at your own pace, just have fun!
