Nearly all law enforcement professionals have in common the need to achieve success in interpersonal communication. No matter how skillful and intelligent they may become, their effectiveness is severely limited if they have not developed good communication skills. Effective communication will not solve all problems, but few problems can be handled effectively without adequate communication." - Preface.

Book excerpt: This book is intended for police officers who want to improve their communication skills in the context of implementing the goals and objectives of community policing. The first chapter discusses basic communication principles that explain how a message is sent and received. It examines the content and relational message components, communication context, verbal and nonverbal codes, channel, and feedback. Chapter 2 is designed to improve an officer's interpersonal communication, as community policing increases the number of interactions between an officer and the community. Chapter 3 considers the dynamics of work groups. Step-by-step instructions are provided for planning and leading a small, task-oriented group meeting. Chapter 4 focuses on public speaking, as it teaches officers how to prepare and deliver a talk before a group; and Chapter 5 instructs officers in how to prepare for and lead a community meeting. Topics cover selecting a presentation format, planning the details of your meeting, and dealing with a hostile audience. Remaining chapters focus on creative problem-solving techniques, ways to convince others to support a creative solution and become involved in an action plan for change, and ways to publicize a program through the media and other means.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This training was intended to demonstrate innovative methods of crime prevention and preventive mental health. Processing family disturbances constitutes a major aspect of police work. Traditional police approaches to the problem do not reflect the realities of this police experience. There is evidence that a significant proportion of injuries and fatalities suffered by police occur in the highly volatile family conflict situation. The present project attempted to modify family assaults and family homicides and to reduce personal danger to police officers in such situations. The project attempted the development of a new preventive mental health strategy. Assuming that family conflict may be an early sign of emotional disorder in one or all of the participants, the project attempted to utilize policemen as front-line casefinders in keeping with theories of primary prevention. It was proposed that selected policemen could be provided with interpersonal skills necessary to effect constructive outcomes in deteriorating situations which require police intervention. Rejection of an exclusively specialized role for the police officers involved was a major emphasis. The program avoided the conversion of policemen into social workers or psychotherapists. The officers were expected to perform all generalized police patrol functions but were the individuals dispatched on all family disputes in a given geographical area. In addition to continuous group experience, each family specialist was assigned an individual consultant for at least one hour weekly consultation. The individual consultants were advanced clinical psychology students who acquired in this way an unusual community consultation experience. The reciprocal effect of these encounters on the students and upon the policemen is self-evident.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teams, groups, and task forces in law enforcement agencies are becoming progressively more significant as a greater number of agencies have gained experience with their use. The goal of this text is to bring to reality the importance of teams to police managers, operational personnel, and members of the community. Learning objectives appear at the beginning of each chapter that will allow the reader to grasp the complexity and intricacy of these teams. The book contains helpful information to gain essential knowledge about groups in an organization with emphasis on teams, groups, and task forces in law enforcement. This is followed by a chapter on leadership and the leader, including the leadership continuum concept. Of special interest are chapters that address commitment, accountability, and team performance which serve as a basis for the behavioral and social skills needed to integrate and foster the creation of a real team. This is the glue that holds the team together and guides it in such a way that tasks are accomplished, which is an essential ingredient of human resource management. Other topics include professional growth, developmental skills techniques, emphatic team communication, motivation and inspiring team members, the operating environment, logic models and problem solving for teams, and the application of the principles of assessment. In addition, the questions/discussion at the end of each chapter provides a concise and up-to-date integration of the chapter content and brings together a practical and operational approach that is clearly useful and informative. Law enforcement professionals, policymakers, investigators and the general public will find the book to be a significant resource in the development of teams, groups, and task forces.
