Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the Internet itself, interest in computing (both local and distant) has grown exponentially. The rapidly changing role of the Internet has resulted in three very different editions of The Internet for Physicians. The first edition attempted to introduce the concept of information transfer and communication and point the way toward a tool of the future. The second edition attempted to assuage trepidation in the use of this emerging tool and suggest the why and wherefore of being connected. The needs that drove those goals have almost completely disappeared. As a result, the bulk of this edition is more focused on the medical aspect of the Internet and its use, and less on the nuts and bolts of connecting and communication through the Web. It has been revamped, reorganized, and expanded to include 30% more content and 90 new illustrations. New to the third edition is an entire section dedicated to Medicine and the Web, with chapters discussing patient education and information, what your patients are seeing on the web, finding quality resources, including clinical-trial and evidence-based medicine sites, how to search and use Pun Med, telemedicine, continuing medical education, medical literature and informatics, applications of on-line journals and submissions, and much more.
Book Synopsis Digital Medicine by : Darrell M. West
Download or read book Digital Medicine written by Darrell M. West and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information technology has dramatically changed our lives in areas ranging from commerce and entertainment to voting. Now, policy advocates and government officials hope to bring the benefits of enhanced information technology to health care. Already, consumers can access a tremendous amount of medical information online. Some physicians encourage patients to use email or web messaging to manage simple medical issues. Increasingly, health care products can be purchased electronically. Yet the promise of e-health remains largely unfulfilled. Digital Medicine investigates the factors limiting digital technology's ability to remake health care. It explores the political, social, and ethical challenges presented by online health care, as well as the impact that racial, ethnic, and other disparities are having on the e-health revolution. It examines the accessibility of health-related websites for different populations and asks how we can close access gaps and ensure the reliability and trustworthiness of the information presented online. Darrell West and Edward Miller use multiple sources, including original survey research and website analysis, to study the content, sponsorship status, and public usage of health care-related websites, as well as the relationship between e-health utilization and attitudes about health care in the United States. They also explore the use of health information technology in other countries. The result is an important contribution to our understanding of health information innovation in America and around the world.

Book Synopsis Crowdsourced Health by : Elad Yom-Tov
Download or read book Crowdsourced Health written by Elad Yom-Tov and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us have gone online to search for information about health. What are the symptoms of a migraine? How effective is this drug? Where can I find more resources for cancer patients? Could I have an STD? Am I fat? A Pew survey reports more than 80 percent of American Internet users have logged on to ask questions like these. But what if the digital traces left by our searches could show doctors and medical researchers something new and interesting? What if the data generated by our searches could reveal information about health that would be difficult to gather in other ways? In this book, Elad Yom-Tov argues that Internet data could change the way medical research is done, supplementing traditional tools to provide insights not otherwise available. He describes how studies of Internet searches have, among other things, already helped researchers track to side effects of prescription drugs, to understand the information needs of cancer patients and their families, and to recognize some of the causes of anorexia. Yom-Tov shows that the information collected can benefit humanity without sacrificing individual privacy. He explains why people go to the Internet with health questions; for one thing, it seems to be a safe place to ask anonymously about such matters as obesity, sex, and pregnancy. He describes in detrimental effects of "pro-anorexia" online content; tells how computer scientists can scour search engine data to improve public health by, for example, identifying risk factors for disease and centers of contagion; and tells how analyses of how people deal with upsetting diagnoses help doctors to treat patients and patients to understand their conditions.
