Book excerpt: This important book explores the need to internationalize the business curriculum and to actively involve faculty in international studies and the global issues that affect the business world. Today's business students urgently need international perspectives and realistic knowledge of business culture, politics, and values from areas around the world. In spite of this need, business programs in the U.S. lag behind the international development of business practices and political economic trends. Internationalization of the Business Curriculum helps educators bridge this gap by presenting the cutting edge of theory, philosophy, and practical thinking and by bringing international perspectives into college business curricula. Internationalization of the Business Curriculum is filled with new ideas and innovative strategies for preparing students to face international competition in the business world. Some of the essential topics covered for educators are: elimination of dysfunctional management, political, and economic ideas currently used in the international sphere the proper role of Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) programs pressing needs for faculty involvement in both international business research and teaching how to integrate up-to-date international information into the curricula and into the classroom accuracy and reliability of the U.S. media This timely book coordinates and integrates various teaching strategies and methods and presents them in a logical progression. It helps emphasize the need for business educators to internationalize their courses. The book also addresses the need to add cultural sensitivity to courses already in use and suggests that some established management theories are ethnocentric. In addition to evaluating existing gaps in business education, the book also describes practical ways to implement changes and new sensitivity to cultural issues in business programs. College faculty and administrators in business, economics, and politics will find valuable mission-based strategies for internationalizing their business curricula. By eliminating ethnocentric teaching models and integrating current international perspectives into business courses, Internationalization of the Business Curriculum helps educators prepare students to face our global business world successfully.

Book excerpt: Internationalizing Business Education is a carefully edited selection of twenty-three essays written by leading educators of international business. this exhaustive treatment of the various dimensions of business school internationalization is divided into seven parts: Rationale and Conceptual Foundation; Historical Perspectives; Faculty Development; Curriculum; Institutional Strategies; Center/Institute Models, and Linkages. This work evolved from the Roundtable on Internationalizing the Business Schools and Faculty held in June 1991 at Michigan State University. The conference brought together business faculty and administrators from North America, Europe, and Australia who shared their perspectives and experiences, and brainstormed about approaches to internationalizing business education. These experts present their views in this volume. In the 1990s, businesses continue to face the challenge of staying competitive in an increasingly global market. Business schools need to internationalize their programs to remain competitive. Until now, information about alternative strategies was not widely available. This book provides business educators, public policymakers, scholars of educational practices, and business executives with the tools they need to compete globally.

Book excerpt: This book assembles state-of-the-art thinking on the internationalization of the curriculum of training centers in I/O and Work Psychology. The experts contributing chapters share their thoughts on the knowledge and skills that students must master in the 21st century, as well as their research on how we can develop students to be globally perceptive, culturally competent working professionals. Chapters cover a full range of topics such as: the scope of subject matter and content, learning objectives and outcomes, global competencies, co-curricular activities, experiential learning and the tacit curriculum, while curriculum development must stem from the philosophy of each institution, these philosophies may diverge in focus (e.g. science versus practice) and outcomes (e.g. jobs versus mastery). Therefore, the goal of the book is not to prescribe a particular curriculum, but rather to provide insight on possible curriculum elements that may be customized for use by training institutions.

Book excerpt: Business schools are facing ever increasing internationalization: students are far less homogenous than before, faculty members come from different countries, and teaching is carried out in second (or even third) languages. As a result business schools and their teachers wrestle with new challenges as these changes accelerate. Teaching and Learning at Business Schools brings together contributions from business school managers and educators involved in the International Teachers Programme; a faculty development programme started by Harvard Business School more than 30 years ago and now run by a consortium of the London Business School, Manchester Business School, Kellogg, Stern School of Business, INSEAD, HEC Paris, IAE Aix-en-Provence, IMD, SDA Bocconi Milan and Stockholm School of Economics. The book tackles themes both within the classroom - teaching across different contexts and cultures - and outside the classroom - leading and developing business schools, designing and running programmes, developing faculty members. The authors provide direction, ideas and techniques for transforming business education that are accessible to everyone.

From his early writings on India and student activism to his recent work on research universities, Altbach has served as a key developer of the expansion of the field to include comparative higher education. His capacity to find, support, and gather the best minds around the world, to organize research teams in order to explore the most relevant issues on comparative higher education has earned him international recognition. His service to the field of comparative higher education is invaluable and incomparable. This festschrift contains original pieces from colleagues and former students following a twofold discussion: the most relevant topics on comparative higher education and particular Altbach’s contributions to this field of work.

This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical review of the internationalization process among higher education institutions (HEIs), taking a closer look at the case of business schools. The first part offers a novel definition of this phenomenon and examines the forces that drive international initiatives. It then examines and explains the “internationalization paradox”: the observation that despite evidence that many international initiatives fail to deliver what they promise, for the heads of HEIs they nevertheless remain at the top of the agenda. In turn, the second part of the book develops a unifying framework that identifies alternative models of internationalization and explains how they relate to one another. Based on this framework, the book presents a model of the truly global HEI, whose mission is to learn from the world rather than teach the world what it knows. The book’s central thesis is that it is unlikely that HEIs will be able to transform themselves into truly global HEIs because of historical and organizational barriers rather than a shortage of resources or a lack of visionary leadership. The book concludes that most HEIs should refrain from claiming that their aim is to become global institutions, and should instead focus on the successful implementation of an import-export model of internationalization that calls for initiatives such as the internationalization of the curriculum, the creation of student and faculty exchange programs, and the participation in international academic and research partnerships. Any attempt to transform themselves into truly global institutions is unlikely to succeed and may distract them from their fundamental mission: to educate their home-based students and help them become effective global citizens.
