Book excerpt: This casebook demonstrates that the future of global business lies in how well the multinational landscape is charted and how the importance of Asian market leaders is deeply embedded in it. It offers international management students and researchers an extensive guide to the business history, strategy development, and foreign market entry modes used by emerging Asian multinationals. The cases focus on well-known companies such as Lenovo, Alibaba, Infosys, Huawei, Panasonic, and Rakuten. These companies, all of which generate huge revenues in their own countries (e.g. in China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam), are now becoming increasingly sophisticated and striving to become global brands, while also enjoying the active support of their governments in terms of their international business. Readers will learn about the current multinational landscape in Asia, the management challenges, and the future implications for traditional western companies seeking to retain their market share. Chapters on corporate entrepreneurship, human resource management and intercultural competence, and current branding trends in Asia will provide a cutting-edge update on international business strategy for students and practitioners alike.

We understand the latter as the existence of new macroeconomic solidarities. These are attested since about the middle of the 1980s, with the observation of a tripolar world drawn up by Kenichi Ohmae. The book intends to explain all theories of globalization, as well as to clarify its relations with innovation. It constitutes an unprecedented synthesis on this theme, illustrated by examples from many sectors of activity.

If you want to see the future of retail and commerce, read this book, and then, if you can, spend a week shopping in Shanghai. “ The gravitational force of retail has moved east and industry executives that ignore this monumental shift do so at their peril. “New Retail” is a concise, no nonsense look into one of the most profound revolutions in retail history. Authors Dudarenok and Michael Zakkour provide a clear and well documented narrative on how companies like Alibaba, JD and Tencent are, quite literally, reinventing the modern concept of retail. ” Doug Stephens, Founder of Retail Prophet and Author of Reengineering Retail: The Future of Selling in a Post-Digital World

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Augsburg, language: English, abstract: It is a well-known fact that in the past decades globalization has taken international trade to another level, i.e. there are more and more companies involved in international business, importing and exporting at a higher level than ever before. From the scientific point of view though there have been made observations concerning a specific kind of companies whose international activities seem to contradict the traditional, incremental models of the internationalization process of a firm. These traditional theories assume that just after having established a certain domestic market position and having gathered enough business experience the internationalization process of the firm begins (cf. Uppsala-Modell: Johanson and Vahlne, 1977, 1990). The contradiction though consists in the fact that the mentioned specific kind of companies goes international right from its inception and seems to perceive the whole world as one single market which can be entered and supplied just as easy as the domestic one (Oviatt and McDougall, 1994). So what will be discussed in this paper is in general the phenomenon of the so-called born globals (Rennie, 1993) and in specific the differences that might exist between those born globals and other young traditional internationalizing companies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following drastic shifts in the spatial organization of goods production, increasingly fierce competition now forces firms also to look critically at how to organize the production of services. While digitization and advances in information and communication technologies have enabled firms to unbundle service production processes, the increased global availability of skilled labour allows for the relocation of ever more of these processes around the world. As a result, a new geography of services production takes shape: a geography that is defined by new interregional and international divisions of labour and held together by increasingly complex global services production networks. This book examines how the reorganisation of services production alters relations between and generates different sets of challenges and opportunities for economic development in the Global North and the Global South. Drawing from 11 case studies probing various aspects of services production in different parts of the world, the book brings out the remarkable heterogeneity and transformative capacities of services. It successively shows how global trade in services creates new interdependencies between services producing and services consuming regions; reveals how services help to mitigate the impact of and contribute to recovery from economic crises in the Global North; and demonstrates how services offshoring fosters economic development and service-sector driven modernisation processes in the Global South. The book’s openness to the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of services production enlarges our understanding of which particular services in which spatiotemporal context have the capacity to generate good jobs, contribute to productivity and drive economic growth. The book stands out from other books in the field in that it combines perspectives on services-driven transformations from both the Global North and the Global South and looks into the role of various services segments. Based on pioneering empirical research and original data it offers a timely contribution to this growing debate. The book provides valuable insights for students, scholars and professionals interested in services, services offshoring, services-driven growth, and socioeconomic transformations in the Global North and South.
