Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationalisation has been a binding request for firms dealing with the challenges of the present-day realities. Extant international business publications have recently begun to point out the relationship between the notions of ‘business model’ and ‘internationalisation’, yet the filed needs considerably more attention. The core aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which business models and internationalisation impact one another in the process of initiating and expanding international business activities. The analysis makes it feasible to detect the core issues of the interdependences between business models and internationalisation to facilitate management decision-making and implementation of pertinent firm internationalisation incorporating the application of appropriate business models. In this book, the business model is applied to explore the specifics and aspects of firm internationalisation processes. Innovating the business model is analysed as a persuasive means for augmenting the propensities of firms to internationalise. The book enriches the comprehension of the significance of business model innovation as an enabler of firm internationalisation, in view that scares in what manners business model innovation facilitate firm internationalisation. The book chapters address a broad range of issues encompassing: the general roles of business model in firm internationalisation, the relationships between digital business models and platforms on one side and firm internationalisation on another, how business models determine the internationalisation of services firms, the interplay between business models and firm internationalisation in specific contexts. It will, therefore, be of interest to researchers, academics and advanced students in the fields of international business and management.

Book excerpt: In the 21st century, even small firms can reach customers located in different, often remote, parts of the world. In fact, internationalisation has become a common phenomenon that affects the majority of companies worldwide. Recent research emphasises that there are numerous determinants of a company’s competitive advantage in the international business environment, including product quality, price, and market knowledge. Much less attention, however, has been paid to the role of business relationships. The task of determining the impact of business relationships on performance poses a considerable challenge. In the book, business relationships are operationalised by a set of characteristics and determinants which influence a company’s competitive advantage. The contributors here refer to these characteristics and determinants as components of the company’s internationalisation maturity. It is argued that a higher level of internationalisation maturity increases the firm’s performance. The book includes both conceptual discussions on the role of firms’ business relationships in the internationalisation process and results of extensive empirical studies. In order to verify the concept of a firm’s internationalisation maturity, a mixed methodology was used, combining quantitative (almost 300 companies) and qualitative (40 case studies) research. As such, the book provides useful insights for academics, students of management and international business, and business practitioners.

The author finds that traditional ideas and frameworks used for analyzing, forming and implementing international business marketing strategy in mature markets are in need of adjustment before they are applied to emerging country markets. Accordingly, the author develops the institutional network approach to address the specific challenges afforded by these markets.

Book excerpt: It has become clear that over the past few decades enterprises not only produce and sell abroad but increasingly also develop goods and services outside their home countries; a development now known as the internationalisation of business R and D. This book presents a comprehensive picture of the current state of internationalisation of R and D in the business sector. The contributors explore key patterns of the internationalisation of R and D across various countries and sectors using case studies to underpin empirical evidence. They examine the drivers of the process, revealing the impacts of R and D internationalisation on both home and host countries using both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Topics discussed include: * Why firms locate R and D activities abroad * Data availability, quality and comparability * The role of the EU and the US in the internationalisation of R and D * Country-level factors such as size, workforce and FDI as determinants of R and D internationalisation * Impacts of R and D internationalisation on home and host countries. This book will prove an insightful read for academics, researchers and students with an interest in economics - particularly the economics of innovation - business and management, and science and technology. It will also prove a valuable resource for R and D policymakers and public administrators.

Book excerpt: With the globalization process, firms are seeking to expand their activities to international markets but are also “feeling” expanded competition from abroad. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), though seeking to expand abroad, have particularities that hinder their natural international expansion path due to particular barriers and challenges that most multinational firms have already overcome. Cases on Internationalization Challenges for SMEs provides a set of case studies on the internationalization of SMEs in order to share the latest empirical research findings in the field of internationalization in the context of a globalized world, and which considers a highly competitive international business setting. This includes examining the main reasons for the success or failure of the process of internationalization of SMEs and their inherent activities. Covering topics that include competitive advantage, export performance, and inward internationalization, this book targets managers, executives, and entrepreneurs concerned with how to adapt their companies to a fast-changing international business environment, how to conduct internationalization strategies, how to choose the most adequate international entry modes, and how to adapt their products and strategies to international markets. It is also suited for academicians, researchers, and students in the field of management.

This timely contribution highlights the need for a deeper understanding of today’s internationalization process, critiquing existing literature and instead proposing a new paradigm based on a re-interpretation of the Resource-based View (RBV). Analysing the motives behind internationalizing, the factors affecting entry choices, and the challenges connected to outsourcing and offshoring, the authors present a new framework for understanding the reasons behind internationalization and the financial risks that are involved. With theoretical discussion and empirical case studies, this book seeks to offer an informed insight into internationalizing, making it an invaluable read for those researching entrepreneurship on a global scale, as well as managers and leaders of international firms.

Book excerpt: With stagnated demand in many home economies, the need to internationalize and exploit foreign market opportunities has never been more paramount for businesses to succeed at a global level. However, this process raises a number of questions, such as: can firms use their knowledge of one market in the next? Can firms pursue internationalization on several fronts at the same time? How should firms handle cultural and institutional differences between markets? This textbook provides students with the core research in international business and strategy, including organization, efficiency, external relationships and the challenges found in an increasingly multicultural world. Each part begins with a presentation of the issues and controversies faced in that particular area, followed by a synthesis of the research which provides avenues for future research. To facilitate and encourage further debate and learning, each part also includes at least one original case study. Compiled by two of the World's leading scholars of international business, and supplemented with critical commentaries and a range of integrative case studies, this comprehensive textbook provides advanced students of international business and strategy with a resource that will be invaluable in their studies and beyond.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7, University of applied sciences Frankfurt a. M., course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on different internationalization strategies for small business. The current term paper should explain the basics by defining the essential terms. Subsequently, reasons and motives for internationalization strategies listed for small business. As a result, conceivable market entry forms are to be set out with their advantages and disadvantages. Based on the strategy forms, the opportunities and risks that could arise for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an international market entry strategy are then highlighted. Finally, in the last chapter, a conclusion is drawn and daring a look into the future for the small business. Internationalization has undergone a dynamic development in the past three decades. The main driving force were the political changes in the world. This political opening also led to a disproportionate growth in the world trade. These changes also affect small and medium-sized companies and are a current challenge, that should be raised, which is also reflected in the close ties, between the Term middle class and foreign trade shows. The globalization of the economy is forcing medium-sized companies to rethink and restructure their business processes and value chains. However, SMEs lack specific prerequisites for carrying out international business activities. Not just capital and management but also the knowledge of internationalization is a significant success factor. Nevertheless, SMEs can develop opportunities and successfully translate them into an international activity that, especially because of its niche strategy, aims to meet the special needs of international clients that can not satisfied by large companies A niche production or export, however, is not enough to assert oneself against international competitors in the long term. That is why influences like use of technical advances, short product cycles and fast and active presence abroad to internationalize the value chain of the company. For a successful and targeted internationalization strategy for small business, it should be necessary to create a concept that includes motives, market entry forms, possible potentials and conceivable obstacles.

Book excerpt: New Frontiers in the Internationalization of Businesses: Empirical Evidence from Indigenous Businesses in Canada highlights the impact of international expansion as a potential pathway to address the challenges of poverty and vulnerability, and provide relevant new knowledge on the factors that support successful international expansion of Indigenous businesses. This book examines how entrepreneur's identity and cultural values, network ties, motivations, and resources and capabilities facilitate or hinder the internationalization of Indigenous businesses. This book also investigates the economic and non-economic outcomes of internationalization. Most interestingly, this book answers the question of what is so new about the internationalization of Indigenous businesses by comparing this context to mainstream (non-Indigenous) businesses. The book also delves in the phenomena related to home-based businesses, service industries, and specific ethnic groups. This book has implications for vulnerable populations, especially those more than 370 million indigenous people spread across 70 countries worldwide. Studying those Indigenous businesses that decide to pursue international opportunities and how they become successful in international markets is a timely and novel area of research. Understanding this context contributes to current debates in international business.
