Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Subject Of Waste Management Has Been Grown To The Status Of Maturity In All Developed Countries. Every Year, New Techniques Are Being Developed To Recover The Energy And Recycle The Materials. The Nations Like Usa, Australia, Norway And Western Europe Are Handling Their Solid Wastes In A Scientific And Hygienic Way. However, In Most Of The Developing World, Of Africa, Asia And Eastern European Nations, The Collection, Transportation And Disposal Of Solid Waste Is Still At Its Lowest Ebb. In Usa, Though The Technology For Handling Of The Solid Waste Is Available, The Wastes Are Mostly Managed By Land Filling (70%) And Incineration With Or Without Energy Recovery. It Means A Major Share Of The Source Is Wasted. Only 30-31% Of The Waste Materials Are Recovered. In Contrast To This, In Developing Countries Like India 60-70% Of The Materials Are Recovered And Reused Mostly By The Informal Sector Without Application Of Any Art Of Technology. There Is No National Level Data Are Available On Solid Waste Management In Those Countries. Often The Waste Is Open Burnt Or Land Filled In The Low-Lying Areas. The Unscientific Way Of Waste Management Pose The Risk Of Diseases To Humans And Also Degrade The Environment. The Toxic Smoke Containing, Furans And Dioxins Are Released After The Burning Of Trash, Leading To The Rise In Carcinogenic Trace Gases In The Atmosphere. In The Present Context, The Us Is Conveniently Taken As A Representative Of Developed World And India Representing Developing Countries And The Book Is Designed Into 6-7 Chapters. Chapter 1 Deals With The General Aspects And Basic Principles Of Solid Waste Management. Chapter 2 Deals With The Solid Waste Management In Usa And Solid Waste Management In India Is Dealt In Chapter 3 Respectively. Details About Plastic Waste Management In Us, India And Rest Of The World Are Explained In Chapter 4. Management Of Biomedical Waste Is Collated And Provided In Chapter 5 And Chapter 6 Deals With The Hazardous Waste Management. The Subject Of Solid Waste Management And Urban Agriculture Is Provided In Chapter 7 And The Chapter 8 Narrates The Comparative Aspects Of Waste Management In Us And India. It Is Observed That A Good Number Of Books Are Available On The Technologies And Principles Of Waste Treatment, However Meager Titles Exist On Waste Management. Hence Book Is An Appropriate Attempt To Fill The Lacunae. This Book Will Be Useful To Undergraduate And Graduate Students, Environmental Managers And The General Public As Well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE Sanitary landfills are the most widely utilized method of solid waste disposal around the world. With increased use and public awareness of this method of disposal, there is much concern with respect to the pollution potential of the landfill leachate. Depending on the composition and extent of decomposition of the refuse and hydrological factors, the leachate may become highly contaminated. As leachate migrates away from a landfill, it may cause serious pollution to the groundwater aquifer as well as adjacent surface waters. There is growing concern about surface and groundwater pollution from leachate. Better understanding and prediction of leachate generation, containment, and treatment are needed. This book contains a literature review of various methodologies that have been developed for prediction, generation, characterization, containment, control, and treatment of leachate from sanitary landfills. The contents of this book are divided into nine chapters. Each chapter contains theory and definition of the important design parameters, literature review, example calculations, and references. Chapter 1 is devoted to basic facts of solid waste problems current status and future trends towards waste reduction and recycling. Chapter 2 provides a general overview of municipal solid waste generation, collection, transport, resource recovery and reuse, and disposal options. The current status of sanitary landfill design and operation, problems associated with the landfilling, and future trends are presented in Chapter 3. Methods of enhanced stabilization, recycling landfill space, methane recovery, and above grade landfilling, and closure and post closure care of completed landfills are also discussed in detail. Chapter 4 provides a general overview of Subtitle D regulations and its impact upon sanitary landfilling practices. Chapter 5 is devoted entirely to moisture routing and leachate generation mechanisms. Examples of calculation pr

Book excerpt: Municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal is an ever-increasing problem in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries. To date, landfilling is still the preferred option for the disposal and management of MSW due to its low-cost operation. While this solution is advantageous from a cost perspective, it introduces a high level of potential pollutants which can be detrimental to the local environment. Control and Treatment of Landfill Leachate for Sanitary Waste Disposal presents research-based insights and solutions for the proper management and treatment of landfill leachate. Highlighting relevant topics on emerging technologies and treatment innovations for minimizing the environmental hazards of waste disposal, this innovative publication contributes to filling in many of the gaps that exist in the current literature available on leachate treatment. Waste authorities, solid waste management companies, landfill operators, legislators, environmentalists, graduate students, and researchers will find this publication beneficial to their professional and academic interests in the area of waste treatment and management.

It is a potent "greenhouse gas" that warms the earth; controls the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere (OH) indirectly affecting the cycles and abundances of many atmospheric trace gases; provides water vapor to the stratosphere; scavenges chlorine atoms from the stratosphere, terminating the catalytic ozone destruction by chlorine atoms, including the chlorine released from the man-made chlorofluorocarbons; produces ozone, CO, and CO2 in the troposphere; and it is an index of life on earth and so is present in greater quantities during warm interglacial epochs and dwindles to low levels during the cold of ice ages. By all measures, methane is the second only to CO2 in causing future global warming. The book presents a comprehensive account of the current understanding of atmospheric methane, and it is an end point for summarizing more than a decade of intensive research on the global sources, sinks, concentrations, and environmental role of methane.

The lifecycle of waste can similarly be considered to be a journey from the cradle (when an item becomes valueless and, usually, is placed in the dustbin) to the grave (when value is restored by creating usable material or energy; or the waste is transformed into emissions to water or air, or into inert material placed in a landfill). This preface provides a route map for the journey the reader of this book will undertake. Who? Who are the intended readers of this book? Waste managers (whether in public service or private companies) will find a holistic approach for improving the environmental quality and the economic cost of managing waste. The book contains general principles based on cutting edge experience being developed across Europe. Detailed data and a computer model will enable operations managers to develop data-based improvements to their systems. Producers oj waste will be better able to understand how their actions can influence the operation of environmentally improved waste management systems. Designers oj products and packages will be better able to understand how their design criteria can improve the compatibility of their product or package with developing, environmentally improved waste management systems. Waste data specialists (whether in laboratories, consultancies or environ mental managers of waste facilities) will see how the scope, quantity and quality of their data can be improved to help their colleagues design more effective waste management systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical perspective on the issue of organising waste in cities, which has often been positioned in terms of relatively narrow engineering, economic and physical science approaches. It emphasises the ways in which the notion of waste, and the narratives and discourses associated with it, have been socially constructed with corresponding implications for waste governance and local waste handling practices. Organising waste in the city takes a broad and international approach to the ways in which the issue of waste is framed, and brings together narratives from cities as diverse as Amsterdam, Bristol, Cairo, Gothenburg, Helsingborg and Managua. Organised into four main sections and with an integrative introduction and conclusion, the book not only provides new insights into the hidden stories of urban and municipal household solid waste and waste landscapes, but also connects concerns regarding urban waste to such issues as globalisation, governance, urban ecology, and social, economic and environmental justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current development results in a linear flow from raw material to waste, which cannot be sustainable in the long term. Plus, a global population of 7 billion people means that there are 7 billion waste producers in the world. At present, dumping and landfilling are the primary practices for getting rid of municipal solid waste (MSW). However, this waste contains resources that we’ve yet to utilize. To create sustainable societies, we need to approach zero waste by recovering these resources. There are cities and countries where zero waste is close to becoming a reality. Landfilling of organic waste is forbidden in Europe, and countries such as Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland have developed a variety of technologies to recover resources from MSW. Resource Recovery to Approach Zero Municipal Waste explores the solid waste management laws and regulations of different countries, comparing the latest resource recovery technologies and offering future perspectives. The book tackles the many technical, social, ecological, economical, and managerial aspects of this complex subject while promoting the development of sustainable societies to achieve a greener global environment.

Among all other types of environmental burdens, MSW management is still a mammoth task, and the worst part is that a suitable technique to curb the situation in developing countries has still not emerged. Municipal Solid Waste Management in Developing Countries will help fill this information gap based on information provided by field professionals. This information will be helpful to improve and manage solid waste systems through the application of modern management techniques. It covers all the fundamental concepts of MSWM; the various component systems, such as collection, transportation, processing, and disposal; and their integration. This book also discusses various component technologies available for the treatment, processing, and disposal of MSW. Written in view of actual scenarios in developing countries, it provides knowledge to develop solutions for prolonged problems in these nations. It is mainly for undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars, professionals, and policy makers.
