Download or read book Environmental NGOs in World Politics written by Matthias Finger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when states are reactive, at best, to the global ecological crisis and when economic globalization seems to be significantly contributing to the acceleration of that crisis, environmental non-governmental orgainisations (NGOs) are proliferating. This book explains the key role of NGOs in an emerging world environmental politics, showing how NGOs act both as independent bargainers and as agents of social learning, to link biophysical conditions to the political realm at both the local and global levels. Throught the use of case studies the authors reveal the richness and diversity of NGO activity and the dificulty of the choices facing decision-makers in their attempts to protect the environment, seek new forms of governance and foster social environmental learning. The book generates questions that are central, not only to an understanding of NGO relations, but to the study of international environmental politics. Environmental NOGs in World Politics will be of great interest to upper level student sand scholars of both environmental politics and international relations. It will also appeal to environmental-policy professionals.

Book Synopsis On Humane Governance by : Richard A. Falk
Download or read book On Humane Governance written by Richard A. Falk and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contends that the forces of late modernism are being caught between a capital-driven globalization and a territorially rooted revival of tribalism and ultra-nationalism. Its critical focus is on global structures that are producing new patterns of North/South and rich/poor domination, as well as exerting dangerous pressures on the carrying capacities of the planet. Richard Falk argues that any hopeful response to these threatening developments requires the fundamental revision of such basic ideas as sovereignty, democracy, and security. These organizing conceptions of political life are being reshaped during this era of transition from a state-centric world of geopolitics to a more centrally guided world of geogovernance. He contends that geogovernance will have adverse consequences for the human condition unless it can be mainly constructed by transnational democratic forces animated by a vision of humane governance. This volume was written for the Global Civilization Project of the World Order Models Project (WOMP), an international group of scholars formed to think creatively about legal and political structures adequate to the needs of the modern world.

Download or read book Improving Compliance with International Environmental Law written by Jacob Werksman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measures for regulating the behaviour of nation states in relation to the global environment have increasingly taken the form of international treaties and conventions. Many have argued that this has proved to be an ineffective way of halting unsustainable development, for the provisions of these agreements are either too weak or are flouted regularly by the parties concerned. This volume seeks to address the crucial question of how compliance with these agreements could be encouraged effectively without damaging the fragile political consensus that is emerging on environmental issues. With extensive use of case studies, Improving Compliance will make stimulating reading for all students and researchers working in this area, as well as for anyone concerned about the effectiveness of international environmental measures.
