Book Synopsis Direct and Inverse Problems in Wave Propagation and Applications by : Ivan Graham
Download or read book Direct and Inverse Problems in Wave Propagation and Applications written by Ivan Graham and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third volume of three volume series recording the "Radon Special Semester 2011 on Multiscale Simulation & Analysis in Energy and the Environment" taking place in Linz, Austria, October 3-7, 2011. This book surveys recent developments in the analysis of wave propagation problems. The topics covered include aspects of the forward problem and problems in inverse problems, as well as applications in the earth sciences. Wave propagation problems are ubiquitous in environmental applications such as seismic analysis, acoustic and electromagnetic scattering. The design of efficient numerical methods for the forward problem, in which the scattered field is computed from known geometric configurations is very challenging due to the multiscale nature of the problems. Even more challenging are inverse problems where material parameters and configurations have to be determined from measurements in conjunction with the forward problem. This book contains review articles covering several state-of-the-art numerical methods for both forward and inverse problems. This collection of survey articles focusses on the efficient computation of wave propagation and scattering is a core problem in numerical mathematics, which is currently of great research interest and is central to many applications in energy and the environment. Two generic applications which resonate strongly with the central aims of the Radon Special Semester 2011 are forward wave propagation in heterogeneous media and seismic inversion for subsurface imaging. As an example of the first application, modelling of absorption and scattering of radiation by clouds, aerosol and precipitation is used as a tool for interpretation of (e.g.) solar, infrared and radar measurements, and as a component in larger weather/climate prediction models in numerical weather forecasting. As an example of the second application, inverse problems in wave propagation in heterogeneous media arise in the problem of imaging the subsurface below land or marine deposits. The book records the achievements of Workshop 3 "Wave Propagation and Scattering, Inverse Problems and Applications in Energy and the Environment". It brings together key numerical mathematicians whose interest is in the analysis and computation of wave propagation and scattering problems, and in inverse problems, together with practitioners from engineering and industry whose interest is in the applications of these core problems.

Book Synopsis Noise and Vibration from High-speed Trains by : Victor V. Krylov
Download or read book Noise and Vibration from High-speed Trains written by Victor V. Krylov and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2001 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, high-speed railways have become one of the most advanced and fast-developing branches of transportation. Unfortunately, when train speeds increase, the intensity of railway-generated noise and vibration generally become higher, presenting major environmental problems. Since operating train speeds are gradually increasing in all countries and this trend is likely to continue in the future, the knowledge and understanding of possible noise and vibration effects is vital to undertake possible mitigation measures. Noise and vibration from high-speed trains is a definitive reference work on this subject covering the numerous theoretical and practical questions that need to be answered. This comprehensive new book provides the reader with the most recent experimental data, combining, informative illustrations and authoritative information. It represents in one volume the views of leading international experts on the problem of noise and vibration from high-speed trains and suggests possible ways of reducing its environmental impact.Noise and vibration from high-speed trains is essential reading for all scientists and engineers working on prediction and remediation of railway noise and vibration. It is written specifically for environmental consultants, local authorities and designers of new railway lines and will also be an invaluable reference tool for university students and anybody concerned with topical environmental issues.

Download or read book Acoustics of Musical Instruments written by Antoine Chaigne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first English-language translation of Acoustique des instruments de musique, Second Edition, presents the necessary foundations for understanding the complex physical phenomena involved in musical instruments. What is the function of the labium in a flute? Which features of an instrument allow us to make a clear audible distinction between a clarinet and a trumpet? With the help of numerous examples, these questions are addressed in detail. The authors focus in particular on the significant results obtained in the field during the last fifteen years. Their goal is to show that elementary physical models can be used with benefit for various applications in sound synthesis, instrument making, and sound recording. The book is primarily addressed to graduate students and researchers; however it could also be of interest for engineers, musicians, craftsmen, and music lovers who wish to learn about the basics of musical acoustics.

Book Synopsis Domain Decomposition Methods in Scientific and Engineering Computing by : David E. Keyes
Download or read book Domain Decomposition Methods in Scientific and Engineering Computing written by David E. Keyes and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains proceedings from the Seventh International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods, held at Pennsylvania State University in October 1993. The term ``domain decomposition'' has for nearly a decade been associated with the partly iterative, partly direct algorithms explored in the proceedings of this conference. Noteworthy trends in the current volume include progress in dealing with so-called ``bad parameters'' in elliptic partial differential equation problems, as well as developments in partial differential equations outside of the elliptically-dominated framework. Also described here are convergence and complexity results for novel discretizations, which bring with them new challenges in the derivation of appropriate operators for coarsened spaces. Implementations and architectural considerations are discussed, as well as partitioning tools and environments. In addition, the book describes a wide array of applications, from semiconductor device simulation to structural mechanics to aerodynamics. Presenting many of the latest results in the field, this book offers readers an up-to-date guide to the many facets of the theory and practice of domain decomposition.
Book Synopsis Domain Decomposition Methods in Science and Engineering XXI by : Jocelyne Erhel
Download or read book Domain Decomposition Methods in Science and Engineering XXI written by Jocelyne Erhel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 931 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 21st international conference on domain decomposition methods in science and engineering held in Rennes, France, June 25-29, 2012. Domain decomposition is an active and interdisciplinary research discipline, focusing on the development, analysis and implementation of numerical methods for massively parallel computers. Domain decomposition methods are among the most efficient solvers for large scale applications in science and engineering. They are based on a solid theoretical foundation and shown to be scalable for many important applications. Domain decomposition techniques can also naturally take into account multiscale phenomena. This book contains the most recent results in this important field of research, both mathematically and algorithmically and allows the reader to get an overview of this exciting branch of numerical analysis and scientific computing.
