Book Synopsis Internal Variables in Thermoelasticity by : Arkadi Berezovski
Download or read book Internal Variables in Thermoelasticity written by Arkadi Berezovski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes an effective method for modeling advanced materials like polymers, composite materials and biomaterials, which are, as a rule, inhomogeneous. The thermoelastic theory with internal variables presented here provides a general framework for predicting a material’s reaction to external loading. The basic physical principles provide the primary theoretical information, including the evolution equations of the internal variables. The cornerstones of this framework are the material representation of continuum mechanics, a weak nonlocality, a non-zero extra entropy flux, and a consecutive employment of the dissipation inequality. Examples of thermoelastic phenomena are provided, accompanied by detailed procedures demonstrating how to simulate them.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications by : Cemal Basaran
Download or read book Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications written by Cemal Basaran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition adds new sections on derivation of dynamic equilibrium equations in unified mechanics theory and solution of an example, derivation of very high cycle fatigue thermodynamic fundamental equation and application/verification with two metal fatigue examples, derivation of thermodynamic fundamental equations for metal corrosion, examples of corrosion – fatigue interaction. There is also an example of ultrasonic vibration fatigue and one traditional tension/compression loading in elastic regime. While updated and augmented throughout, the book retains its description of the mathematical formulation and proof of the unified mechanics theory (UMT), which is based on the unification of Newton’s laws and the laws of thermodynamics. It also presents formulations and experimental verifications of the theory for thermal, mechanical, electrical, corrosion, chemical and fatigue loads, and it discusses why the original universal laws of motion proposed by Isaac Newton in 1687 are incomplete. The author provides concrete examples, such as how Newton’s second law, F = ma, gives the initial acceleration of a soccer ball kicked by a player, but does not tell us how and when the ball would come to a stop. Over the course of the text, Dr. Basaran illustrates that Newtonian mechanics does not account for the thermodynamic changes happening in a system over its usable lifetime. And in this context, this book explains how to design a system to perform its intended functions safely over its usable life time and predicts the expected lifetime of the system without using empirical models, a process currently done using Newtonian mechanics and empirical degradation/failure/fatigue models which are curve-fit to test data. Written as a textbook suitable for upper-level undergraduate mechanics courses, as well as first year graduate level courses, this book is the result of over 25 years of scientific activity with the contribution of dozens of scientists from around the world.

Book Synopsis Multiscale Thermo-Dynamics by : Michal Pavelka

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One common feature of new emerging technologies is the fusion of the very small (nano) scale and the large scale engineering. The classical environment provided by single scale theories, as for instance by the classical hydrodynamics, is not anymore satisfactory. The main challenge is to keep the important details while still be able to keep the overall picture and simplicity. It is the thermodynamics that addresses this challenge. Our main reason for writing this book is to explain such general viewpoint of thermodynamics and to illustrate it on a very wide range of examples. Download or read book Plasticity written by Weimin Han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the theoretical aspects of small strain theory of elastoplasticity with hardening assumptions. It provides a comprehensive and unified treatment of the mathematical theory and numerical analysis. It is divided into three parts, with the first part providing a detailed introduction to plasticity, the second part covering the mathematical analysis of the elasticity problem, and the third part devoted to error analysis of various semi-discrete and fully discrete approximations for variational formulations of the elastoplasticity. This revised and expanded edition includes material on single-crystal and strain-gradient plasticity. In addition, the entire book has been revised to make it more accessible to readers who are actively involved in computations but less so in numerical analysis. Reviews of earlier edition: “The authors have written an excellent book which can be recommended for specialists in plasticity who wish to know more about the mathematical theory, as well as those with a background in the mathematical sciences who seek a self-contained account of the mechanics and mathematics of plasticity theory.” (ZAMM, 2002) “In summary, the book represents an impressive comprehensive overview of the mathematical approach to the theory and numerics of plasticity. Scientists as well as lecturers and graduate students will find the book very useful as a reference for research or for preparing courses in this field.” (Technische Mechanik) "The book is professionally written and will be a useful reference to researchers and students interested in mathematical and numerical problems of plasticity. It represents a major contribution in the area of continuum mechanics and numerical analysis." (Math Reviews)

Book Synopsis Continuum Mechanics through the Ages - From the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century by : Gérard A. Maugin
Download or read book Continuum Mechanics through the Ages - From the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century written by Gérard A. Maugin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixing scientific, historic and socio-economic vision, this unique book complements two previously published volumes on the history of continuum mechanics from this distinguished author. In this volume, Gérard A. Maugin looks at the period from the renaissance to the twentieth century and he includes an appraisal of the ever enduring competition between molecular and continuum modelling views. Chapters trace early works in hydraulics and fluid mechanics not covered in the other volumes and the author investigates experimental approaches, essentially before the introduction of a true concept of stress tensor. The treatment of such topics as the viscoelasticity of solids and plasticity, fracture theory, and the role of geometry as a cornerstone of the field, are all explored. Readers will find a kind of socio-historical appraisal of the seminal contributions by our direct masters in the second half of the twentieth century. The analysis of the teaching and research texts by Duhem, Poincaré and Hilbert on continuum mechanics is key: these provide the most valuable documentary basis on which a revival of continuum mechanics and its formalization were offered in the late twentieth century. Altogether, the three volumes offer a generous conspectus of the developments of continuum mechanics between the sixteenth century and the dawn of the twenty-first century. Mechanical engineers, applied mathematicians and physicists alike will all be interested in this work which appeals to all curious scientists for whom continuum mechanics as a vividly evolving science still has its own mysteries.
