Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Endocrine Organs: An Introduction to the Study of Internal Secretion This book is founded upon a course of lectures (Lane Medical Lectures) delivered at Stanford University, California, in the summer of 1913. The lectures were issued in the following year amongst the publications of the University, but in an abbreviated form and without illustrations. It also happened that the proofs, which had been sent for correction, failed to reach me; so that the work as it appeared contained an unusual number of incidental errors. On these and other grounds, I have thought it desirable, with the concurrence of the University authorities, to publish the substance of the lectures in a revised form with the addition of the tracings and photographs which were used to illustrate them: thus both enabling the subject to be brought up to date and affording the opportunity of presenting it to a wider audience. The time at my disposal for the lectures precluded anything more than a passing mention of some of the many workers who have contributed to our knowledge of this, the newest, development of physiology; and in republishing, it has not been deemed desirable unduly to extend the references to literature, seeing that they are already to be found in such standard works as Biedl's Innere Sekretion, in which the bibliography occupies more than 250 large octavo pages, and Swale Vincent's Internal Secretions and the Ductless Glands, where they run to over 2000 titles. Since the appearance of those works much new matter has been added; and more than one long list of literature has appeared in monographs dealing with special internally secreting organs. It is to publications of a comprehensive character such as these that the scientific worker will turn for detailed information. The aim of this little book is less ambitious: it is designed to supply a concise account of our present knowledge for the benefit of students and practitioners who may be desirous of obtaining more information regarding the internal secretions than is afforded by the ordinary text-books of physiology, but have not the time or opportunity to peruse extensive monographs or consult original articles. For a concise history of the subject, as well as a critical examination of the main facts on which the doctrine of internal secretion is based, the small but masterly compendium Les secretions internes, by E. Gley, cannot be too warmly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Internal Secretion and the Ductless Glands The first edition, issued in 1912, has been out of print since 1914, but for various reasons the publication of the second edition has been delayed. During this time many aspects of the subject of internal secretion have undergone material changes. These I hope will find adequate expression in the new version of the book. If I have not been so optimistic and expansive in the treatment of certain topics as other writers on the same subjects, it is because I am convinced that a surer road to sound knowledge lies in tho direction of rigid criticism and a reasoned scepticism. After much doubt and hesitation I have decided to omit the bibliography. Tho objections to such a course are obvious, but I found that to review the whole of the literature has become impossible, and to make a selection involves a task so invidious and delicate and at the same time laborious that I have not had the courage to attempt it. The omission of the references to literature will, however, have the advantage of making the book easier to read, and for a large number of students and practitioners will, I hope, not constitute a serious drawback. Investigators who have access to the first edition will find no difficulty in completing a survey of the literature up to the present time. The papers since 1917 are abstracted in Endocrinology, and since 1915 in Physiological Abstracts. Names are still mentioned freely in the text for the reasons that this arrangement involves less re-writing, and that it leaves the responsibility in tho hands of the original author on numerous topics in which I have had no opportunity of gaining firsthand information. The present edition contains much new matter, but, by re-arrangement and some curtailment of historical and controversial sections, it has been possible to avoid increasing the size of the book. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... DISTINCTIVE CHABACTBBISTICS OF THE INTERNAL SECBETOBY GLANDS AND THE PRINCIPAL PRODUCTS OF THEIR ACTIVITIES Knowledge of the nature and functions of the internal secretory glands can only be based on the precise determination of the conditions which make of these glands a special system, and then on the discovery of the distinctive characteristics of the products resulting from the activities of these organs. Herein lies the primary and fundamental problem. I. CONDITIONS ESSENTIAL TO INTERNAL SECRETION Three conditions suffice to determine an internal secretion as such, but these three conditions are absolutely necessary: The first is of an histological nature; the second results from chemical considerations; and the third is of a physiological order. That is, the cells of the vascular glands in question must present the characteristics of granular elements and these elements must be in close relation to the efferent vessels of the organ; in these cells and in the venous blood of the gland or in the efferent lymph, a specific substance must be chemically determined; finally, the venous blood of the gland must have the physiological action and properties of this specific substance.1 Undoubtedly, for many of the organs included among the endocrine glands, all 1 For technical reasons which are easily understood, the investigation of specific products in the lymph is even more difficult than in the blood. Up to the present, we have only been able to determine the presence of specific substances in the venous blood of some glands; on the other hand, the attempts that it has at times been possible to make on the lymph have always resulted negatively.
