Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of the Literature of Phosphorus Compounds in Animal Metabolism As agricultural scientists our interest in the mineral elements lies in that larger intermediary metabolism between the soil and the sea which begins with the weathering of the rocks, includes the whole of plant and animal metabolism, and ends with the formation of new rocks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Pathways of Metabolism, Volume I focuses on the chemical steps involved in the metabolism of the major constituents of living organisms. The selection first elaborates on free energy and metabolism, enzymes in metabolic sequences, and glycolysis. Discussions focus on comparative biochemistry of glycolysis, enzymes of the glycolytic cycle, oxidative conversion of glucose to tetrose, transmethylation, and free energy and its determination. The manuscript then examines the tricarboxylic acid cycle and other pathways of carbohydrate metabolism. The text ponders on the biosynthesis of complex saccharides, including mechanisms of disaccharide formation, syntheses of branched polysaccharides, synthesis of levan from sucrose, and reversibility reactions by hydrolytic enzymes. The publication then elaborates on fat metabolism and acetoacetate formation and sterol and steroid metabolism. Topics include androgens, sterols, phospholipides or phosphatides, path of fat absorption, and theories of fatty acid breakdown and acetoacetate formation. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in the chemical pathways of metabolism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present to our readers the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Phosphate. A short account of the history of the effort led to the Phosphate Workshops is appro priate and can be of interest to the reader. The idea for Phosphate Workshops was born in the early days of November, 1974. One of us (S. G. M. ) suggested the thought to a group of scientists gathered for a luncheon in one of the attrac tive small restaurants in Weisbaden, Germany. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together interested scientists to discuss the newer developments and the recent advances in the field of phosphate metabolism and the other related minerals. An Organizing Committee made of Shaul G. Massry (USA), Louis V. Avioli (USA), Philippe Bordier (France), Herbert Fleisch (Switzerland), and Eduardo Slatopolsky (USA) was formed. The First Workshop was held in Paris during June 5-6, 1975 and was hosted by Dr. Philippe Bordier. Its proceeding was already published. The Second Workshop took place in Heidelberg during June 28-30, 1976 and was hosted by Dr. Eberhard Ritz. Both of these workshops were extremely successful scientific endeavors, and the need for them was demonstrated by the great interest they generated among the scientific community. The Or ganizing Committee, therefore, decided to continue with the tradi tion to hold additional Workshops annually or every other year.

Book excerpt: Amino acid sequence analysis is useful for the study of problems ranging from modifications of single molecules to complex networks and interactions of species. Many available amino acid sequences are providing the basis for various studies at the proteome level. The dynamics of protein expression and the simulation of complex biological systems in which proteins interact with certain kinetics and in their respective compartments are just about to be tackled. Amino acid sequences will be crucial reference points for such studies. Book excerpt: The Pentose Phosphate Pathway aims to explore the pentose phosphate cycle and the practical techniques applied in its investigation. The main focus of the book is the pentose phosphate cycle in animals as well as microorganisms, and does not discuss the one related to photosynthesis. The book covers the formulation of the pathway, its types, and its alternative formulations; the preparation, processes, and analysis of the pathway; and the enzymes involved. Also covered in the book are the intermediates in intact cells and tissues; distribution of enzymes among different tissues and species; the operation, regulation, and overall control of the pathway; and the clinical, nutritional, and metabolic aspects of the pathway. The text is recommended for biologists and biochemists who would like to understand further the pentose phosphate pathway and the processes related to it.
