Book Synopsis A Summary of the Ground-water Resources and Geohydrology of Grand County, Utah by : Chris Eisinger
Download or read book A Summary of the Ground-water Resources and Geohydrology of Grand County, Utah written by Chris Eisinger and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1999-01-20 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Grand County, ground water has been withdrawn primarily from two types of aquifers: fractured rock and unconsolidated deposits. Some of the better water-yielding rock units are grouped together into nine aquifers, including: the Lower Paleozoic aquifer, the Cutler aquifer, the Wingate aquifer, the Navajo aquifer, the Entrada aquifer, the Morrison aquifer, the Dakota aquifer, the Wasatch aquifer, and the Parachute Creek aquifer. This report summarizes published information regarding ground-water conditions in Grand County. During the preparation of this report we identified several types of information that are not presently available, but can be useful for evaluating ground-water resources, including: (1) structure contour maps showing the depth to aquifers, (2) isopach maps showing the thickness of aquifers, and (3) fracture domain maps showing the predominant orientations of rock discontinuities.

Book Synopsis Alluvial Fan Flooding by : National Research Council
Download or read book Alluvial Fan Flooding written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-10-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alluvial fans are gently sloping, fan-shaped landforms common at the base of mountain ranges in arid and semiarid regions such as the American West. Floods on alluvial fans, although characterized by relatively shallow depths, strike with little if any warning, can travel at extremely high velocities, and can carry a tremendous amount of sediment and debris. Such flooding presents unique problems to federal and state planners in terms of quantifying flood hazards, predicting the magnitude at which those hazards can be expected at a particular location, and devising reliable mitigation strategies. Alluvial Fan Flooding attempts to improve our capability to determine whether areas are subject to alluvial fan flooding and provides a practical perspective on how to make such a determination. The book presents criteria for determining whether an area is subject to flooding and provides examples of applying the definition and criteria to real situations in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah, and elsewhere. The volume also contains recommendations for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is primarily responsible for floodplain mapping, and for state and local decisionmakers involved in flood hazard reduction.
Book Synopsis The Hydrogeology of Moab-Spanish Valley, Grand and San Juan Counties, Utah, with Emphasis on Maps for Water-resource Management and Land-use Planning by : Mike Lowe
Download or read book The Hydrogeology of Moab-Spanish Valley, Grand and San Juan Counties, Utah, with Emphasis on Maps for Water-resource Management and Land-use Planning written by Mike Lowe and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2007-01-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to provide tools for water-resource management and land-use planning; to accomplish this purpose we (1) characterize the relationship of geology to ground-water conditions in the Glen Canyon and the unconsolidated valley-fill aquifers, (2) classify the groundwater quality of the Glen Canyon (east of the valley only) and valley-fill aquifers to formally identify and document the beneficial use of ground-water resources, and (3) apply a ground-water flow model using a mass balance approach to determine the potential impact of projected increased numbers of septic-tank systems on water quality in the valley-fill aquifer and thereby recommend appropriate septic-system density requirements to limit water-quality degradation

Download or read book High-calcium Limestone Resources of Utah written by Bryce T. Tripp and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2005 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project compiles basic information on the most important geologic and infrastructural factors that would be considered when planning a new high-calcium limestone quarry such as: (1) data on existing pits and prospects, (2) chemical analyses of high-calcium limestone, (3) the extent and spatial distribution of geologic formations having good potential for high-calcium limestone production, (4) references for geologic maps covering existing pits and prospects, and analytical data points, (5) locations of transportation corridors, and (6) locations of cement and lime plants, electric power plants, coal mines, and metal smelters that are large consumers of high-calcium limestone.
Book Synopsis Quaternary Tectonics of Utah with Emphasis on Earthquake-hazard Characterization by : Suzanne Hecker
Download or read book Quaternary Tectonics of Utah with Emphasis on Earthquake-hazard Characterization written by Suzanne Hecker and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1993-01-13 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report consolidates and synthesizes information on Quaternary faulting, folding, and volcanism in Utah and characterizes recent tectonic activity throughout the state. The primary purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference on fault-specific seismic sources and surface rupture to facilitate the evaluation of earthquake hazards in Utah. Two 1:500,000-scale maps show Quaternary tectonic features categorized according to probable ages of most recent surface deformation and ages of volcanic rocks. Two appendix tables summarize significant data on the activity of mapped features, including ages of surface displacements and volcanism, slip rates, recurrence intervals, displacement amounts, and lengths of surface ruptures. Good age control and quantitative activity data are available for relatively few tectonic features in Utah and detailed work is needed in many areas of the state. 157 pages + 2 plates
Book Synopsis Hydrogeology of Morgan Valley, Morgan County, Utah by : Janae Wallace
Download or read book Hydrogeology of Morgan Valley, Morgan County, Utah written by Janae Wallace and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report characterizes the relationship of geology to groundwater occurrence and flow, with emphasis on determining the thickness of the valley-fill aquifer and water yielding properties of the fractured rock aquifers. Develops a water budget for the drainage basin and classifies the groundwater quality and identifies the likely sources of nitrate in groundwater.
Book Synopsis The Geology of the Central Virgin River Basin, Southwestern Utah, and Its Relation to Ground-water Conditions by : Hugh A. Hurlow
Download or read book The Geology of the Central Virgin River Basin, Southwestern Utah, and Its Relation to Ground-water Conditions written by Hugh A. Hurlow and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the geology of the central Virgin River basin in southwestern Utah, and characterizes the structure and lithology of the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone and the thickness and stratigraphy of Quaternary-late Tertiary unconsolidated deposits, the two main aquifers in the region. Southwestern Utah has experienced rapid population growth and increased demand on water supplies during the past 15 years, and the purpose of this report is to better define the ground-water resources of the area. Ground water provides approximately half of the public water supply in southwestern Utah, so future decisions regarding water use must be based on careful geologic characterization of the aquifers and their relation to the regional hydrologic system. The results of this study will be applied to ground-water modeling, evaluating regional and local hydrogeologic conditions, and assessing sites for development of ground water. 53 pages + 7 plates
