Book excerpt: Heat transfer in thermal free convection of air was investigated with the aid of a Zehnder-Mach interferometer on bodies with different shapes such as vertical plates; horizontal cylinders with circular and square cross-sections; arrangements of two and three horizontal cylinders; and an air-space enclosed between two horizontal concentric cylinders. All forms had in common that the convection flow set-up was two-dimensional. Free convection heat transfer has immediate application-possibilities for modern aircraft power plants for cooling and insulating problems connected with the handling of jet-engine fuels and rocket propellants. In the course of the studies, it was found that valuable information can be gained, by the interferometer method used, on turbulence. Data on thermal convection are useful also in understanding radial flow phenomena, which are caused by centrifugal forces in turbo-compressors and turbines. Data on heat transfer in turbulent-free convection will be presented at a later data.

Book excerpt: An optical interferometer was used to observe the isotherms which developed within a horizontal fiberglass cylinder as it was non-uniformly heated in axial strips to a maximum wall temperature of 200 F. It was found that when single strips were heated separately, the local heat transfer coefficients at the cylinder wall adjacent to each heater reached a maximum value in the region 20 to 25 degrees below where the wall surface was vertical. Also, the magnitude of the coefficients increased with time for about the first six minutes of heating and then decreased slightly. Numerous photographs are included which show the isothermal patterns formed when various segments of the cylinder wall were heated. (Author).

Book excerpt: The purpose was to determine the effect of diameter, temperature difference, and vibration intensity on the free convective heat transfer rate from horizontal cylinders subjected to transverse vibrations in air. The diameters of the cylinders were 0.085 and 0.25 inches. They were vibrated over a frequency range of 0 to 88 cycles per second and an amplitude range of 0 to 0. 35 inches. The surface temperature ranged from 138 to 201 degrees Fahrenheit, and the maximum vibration intensity was 29 in./sec. Above vibration intensities of 12 in./sec, the variation of the heat transfer rate for both cylinders followed the forced convection curve recommended by McAdams, and the value of the heat transfer rate was independent of the temperature difference. For a given temperature difference and vibration intensity, the value of the heat transfer rate increased as the cylinder diameter decreased. An interferometer study showed that the boundary layer was turbulent above vibration intensities of 12 in./sec.
