Book excerpt: Originally adopted in military networks as a means of ensuring secure communication when confronted with the threats of jamming and interception, spread-spectrum systems are now the core of commercial applications such as mobile cellular and satellite communication. This book provides a concise but lucid explanation and derivation of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum communication systems. The level of presentation is suitable for graduate students with a prior graduate-level course in digital communication and for practicing engineers with a solid background in the theory of digital communication. As the title indicates, the author focuses on principles rather than specific current or planned systems. Although the exposition emphasizes theoretical principles, the choice of specific topics is tempered by their practical significance and interest to both researchers and system designers. Throughout the book, learning is facilitated by many new or streamlined derivations of the classical theory. Problems at the end of each chapter are intended to assist readers in consolidating their knowledge and to provide practice in analytical techniques. Principles of Spread-Spectrum Communication Systems is largely self-contained mathematically because of the four appendices, which give detailed derivations of mathematical results used in the main text.

Book excerpt: The use of spread-spectrum signals has increased dramatically in military radio communications. This report locates methods for direction-finding direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS/SS) signals; digital methods are of special interest. A literature survey was conducted to see if there are any known methods. Investigated if a DS/SS detection method using a square-law detector can be extended to direction-finding. By use of computer simulations, show the performance of the methods found. Benefits and problems are also discussed.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spread-spectrum signals are used widely in military and commercial communication systems due to their interference rejection capability and their lower probability of interception. In military applications the effects of intentional interference (jamming) are mitigated by the processing gain of the spread-spectrum system. In many spread-spectrum systems, processing gain alone is not sufficient to achieve satisfactory system performance and additional interference rejection techniques need to be employed. The interference suppression circuit is placed prior to the spectrum despreader with the goal of reducing the jammer/interferer energy to an adequately low level that can be handled by the system processing gain. We have presented a novel knowledge-based interference cancellation scheme for direct sequence spread-spectrum systems. This innovative approach utilizes: (1) IPUS, an expert system for the Integrated processing and Understanding of signals, to monitor the communication signal environment in order to determine the parameters of interfering signals within a pre-specified accuracy, and (2) Expert system rules to select from a library of preselected techniques, suitable interference rejection schemes based upon the knowledge obtained from monitoring the signal environment. The effectiveness of this novel interference rejection capability is demonstrated by considering a number of interference scenarios and using the software package SPW(copyright), a time-domain Signal Processing Worksystem.

Book excerpt: This edition features a wealth of new material on urban warfare, including a computer simulation of EW architecture alternatives for land-based forces based on urban constraints. It also includes an expanded section on time-hopped spread spectrum communications, more details on modern communication system technologies such as CDMA and OFDM, and an in-depth discussion on sources of urban noise. This practical resource is focused on showing the reader how to design and build jammers specifically targeted at spread spectrum, anti-jam communications. Moreover, it gives assistance in evaluating the expected performance of jamming systems against modern communications systems, and discover the best waveform to use to counter communication systems designed to be effective in jamming environments. While mathematical derivations in general are avoided, the book presents error rate performance equations for most modern digital anti-jam communication systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Receivers systems are considered the core of electronic warfare (EW) intercept systems. Without them, the fundamental purpose of such systems is null and void. This book considers the major elements that make up receiver systems and the receivers that go in them. This resource provides system design engineers with techniques for design and development of EW receivers for modern modulations (spread spectrum) in addition to receivers for older, common modulation formats. Each major module in these receivers is considered in detail. Design information is included as well as performance tradeoffs of various components. Major factors that influence the functioning of the modules are identified and discussed. Key performance parameters are identified as well, and approaches to achieving design goals are considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lecture covers the fundamentals of spread spectrum modulation, which can be defined as any modulation technique that requires a transmission bandwidth much greater than the modulating signal bandwidth, independently of the bandwidth of the modulating signal. After reviewing basic digital modulation techniques, the principal forms of spread spectrum modulation are described. One of the most important components of a spread spectrum system is the spreading code, and several types and their characteristics are described. The most essential operation required at the receiver in a spread spectrum system is the code synchronization, which is usually broken down into the operations of acquisition and tracking. Means for performing these operations are discussed next. Finally, the performance of spread spectrum systems is of fundamental interest and the effect of jamming is considered, both without and with the use of forward error correction coding. The presentation ends with consideration of spread spectrum systems in the presence of other users. For more complete treatments of spread spectrum, the reader is referred to [1, 2, 3].
