Book excerpt: Symposium with over one hundred presentations was highlighted by overviews of the complex nature of PAH and their interaction with the environment and the human population that must live within it. New approaches and techniques for measuring PAH were discussed as were the fate of these compounds in the environment. Papers were presented defining the altered biological responses that were induced by PAH species. In some cases the newly defined, substituted PAH had greater effects than the parent compound. Several reports concentrated on the synthesis of derivative PAH species and the actual formation processes that occur in the combustion of fossil fuels.

Book excerpt: Leonardite is a naturally occurring oxidized form of lignite coal that is rich in humic materials. It is collected during coal-mining procedures, as it is commonly found overlying coal seams. Humic substances have been shown to significantly enhance the aqueous solubilities of PAHs by acting as a surfactant, increasing the water solubility of the PAH and allowing the contaminants to enter the aqueous phase. The use of humic acids on contaminated soils has the potential to greatly enhance the solubility, and consequently the bioavailability, of PAHs allowing for an easier and more efficient bioremediation procedure. A fluorescence quenching method was used to determine the association constants (Kb) for various water-soluble humic materials and naphthalene. The objective of the microcosm study was to determine if a variety of dissolved humic material solution amendments could influence the biodegradation rate of selected PAHs, namely anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene, in a soil with previous exposure to PAHs. Book excerpt: In March, 1983 a workshop on Pollutants in Porous Media was hosted by the Institute of Soils and Water of the Agricultural Research Organi zation in Bet Dagan, Israel. At this workshop, the unsaturated zone be tween the soil surface and groundwater was the focal point of discus sions for scientists from various disciplines such as soil chemists, physicists, biologists and environmental engineers. Since then, the prob lem of soil and water pollution has only worsened as more and more cases of pollution caused by human activities including agriculture and industry have been revealed. A great deal of work has been carried out by environmental scientists since 1983 in elucidating the behavior of the many classes of pollutants and the complex physical, chemical, and bio logical transformations which they undergo as they move through the soil to the vadose zone and, in many cases, the groundwater. In light of this, it was felt that another meeting of specialists from the many disciplines which deal with this subject was necessary and so a Second International Workshop on the Behavior of Pollutants in Porous Media, sponsored by IUPAC (the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) and IAHS (the International Association of Hydrological Sciences), was organized and held in the Institute of Soils and Water of the Agricultural Research Organization in Bet Dagan, Israel during 1987. June, The present volume is a selection of the talks presented at this second workshop and deals only with toxic organic chemicals in porous media.

Book excerpt: Effective remediation of polluted environments is a priority in both Eastern and Western countries. In the U.S. and Europe, remediation costs generally exceed the net economic value of the land. As a result, scientists and engineers on both sides of the Atlantic have aggressively tried to develop novel technologies to meet regulatory standards at a fraction of the costs. In situ remediation shows considerable promise from both technical and economic perspectives. In situ technologies that deploy natural attenuating agents such as humic substances (HS) may be even more cost effective. Numerous studies have shown humics capable of altering both the chemical and the physical speciation of the ecotoxicants and in turn attenuate potential adverse environmental repercussions. Furthermore, the reserves of inexpensive humic materials are immense. Which suggests HS portend great promise as inexpensive amendments to mitigate the environmental impacts of ecotoxicants and as active agents in remediation. To elucidate emerging concepts of humics-based remediation technologies, we organized the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW), entitled "Use of humates to remediate polluted environments: from theory to practice", held on September 23-29, 2002 in Zvenigorod, Russia (see the web-site http://www.mgumus.chem.msu.ru/arw).
